Tell us about Richmond

Greetings Hawkeyes, if you told me 4 days ago I would be posting on a Iowa message board I wouldn't of believed it. Ill go ahead and talk a little about us. Like you, we're getting hot at the right time. We had a what was likely an NCAA team back during 2020 but COVID wound up cancelling the tournament. Then last year we underachieved during a COVID ravaged season (3 pauses) with essentially the same squad. We returned many of the same players again this year but underachieved, had some bad bounces in the regular season vs all the top teams we avenged in the tournament. I feel that we had played like we did the last 4 days the regular season would of yielded better results. All in all we are thrilled to break what has been a way to long NCAA drought and seeing what these guys can do on the big stage vs the Big Boys.

As a team we don't run the Princeton offense as all the talking heads like to say since our HC is a Princeton grad. There are elements of it, specifically with regards to cutting to the basket. Defense was porous most the season.

Were led by A10 Tournament MVP Jacob Gilyard (5th year) the all time NCAA steals leader. He's playing the best ball of his career at the moment and was the main catalyst of the team during the tournament. Known more of a distributor but was more of a scorer earlier in his career and has opted to take more initiative trying to score the ball.

As far as some other key players for us Tyler Burton is IMO our most talented player and biggest mismatch when we play in the A10. Averages 16/7 shoots 80% from FT and can take control of a game.

6th year senior and AARP member Grant Golden has been here forever. Has good post moves and can dish the ball as well. Not known for his defense or rebounding though. More of a point forward.

5th year senior Nathan Cayo plays the 4 for us and isn't having as strong a season he did previously but is a very good cutter and getting to the basket. Finishing can be a problem with him at times.

Our best defender Andre Gustovson was out most the first half of the season and took a while to get back to 100%. He's been a great glue guy for us this season and does all the small things.

Bench included former All Conference player Nick Sherrod who tore his ACL twice over the years and came back for a 6th year. Not the player he once was, slow defensively but able to still shoot the 3. Matt Grace who is a wild card. He's Grant Goldens backup, played a ton in the NIT last year and balled out and turned into a solid role player since. Kinda awkward looking game, but he gave us the go ahead points today and yesterday late in the game. We have played him and golden on the floor at the same time too. Im curious if we go with a bigger lineup vs. Iowa.

Have a few other players but these will get the bulk of our minutes. Got rolled vs Maryland earlier this season but have beaten Big 10 teams in the past (2020 Wisconsin included). Our Achilles heel is rebounding. We got better at it the past few weeks but if I am Iowa I am crashing the boards EVERY TIME you miss a shot. We are not a historically good rebounding team. Our coach tends to emphasize efficiency over being overly physical. (Focus on preventing/causing turnovers over creating more possessions with rebounding). We are the only school to win games as a 12,13,14,15 seed and have a history of being "Giant Killers" which the media will probably talk about during the game.

Oh our AD is an Iowa grad.

Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. Always good to hear the real inside scoop from a fan that knows versus a talking head that will key on a single player and only talk about their game.

Iowa has struggled to rebound this season especially early but has been much better as of late. It'll be interesting to see if Iowa can win the rebounding battle as that usually leads to a victory.

I expect Iowa to try to go really uptempo and run the ball early in the game. I expect Richmond will try to slow the pace. Should be fun.

The have impressive ball movement. I doubt we get 6 or 7 passes thrown into our laps like vs Purdue.

I think its imperative were able to push the ball inside to Golden who can setup the offense under the basket and get the defense lost which could lead to a lot of cutters. When we are at our best, teams that play us for the first time and are passive are likely to find themselves behind real quick and chasing us the rest of the game. If you are careless with the ball it will be a long day no matter how good a shooting night you're having.

Welcome to the board and I would say good luck but I would be lying. Thanks for the information on your team. Both teams don't put the opponent on the line, and neither team turns the ball over very much at all. Could be a fast game.

Even though Iowa is only a five seed because the selection committee chose to ignore results of conference tournaments, I have never seen more national Talking Heads hype an Iowa Team more. You’ve got multiple people predicting them in the final four, and even predicting them in the national championship game.

no disrespect to Richmond, but it’s not gonna be Richmond or anyone else who figure out a way to beat these Hawkeyes.

everything depends on this team now. In 40 years almost, this is the first Hawkeye team that truly has the talent to win it all. That will be a tall order, but they are a very very special team.

If Iowa responds to this pressure and this hype by playing tight, or changing anything they’ve been doing over the last six weeks, even a team like Richmond could take down this giant.

but I don’t think that’s happening.

What I’ve been watching is a championship level defense, and I can’t believe I’m saying that, but it’s true. And I’ve been watching heart like I’ve never seen before. Iowa just beat Purdue, a team with at least five NBA players, And they did it with less rest and against basically a home crowd for the boilermakers who had more than 10,000 fans at the game.

Iowa shot poorly from the three, totally uncharacteristic of them, and they were missing so many wide-open shots. In past years that would’ve been doom for them. But they controlled the game with their defense, at least until the bench stepped up and gave them enough offense to win.

If Iowa plays within themselves, and plays with this flowing, junkyard dog, absolutely relentless defense, this is a final four team, at least.

good luck to Richmond. I’ve been to the campus and actually saw some of the huge orb weaving spiders in summer, and I was a little bit scared. Or maybe that was my young sons. Enjoy the game, good luck, and NO INJURIES.

Final Four? Final Four? Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's take care of Richmond and Providence and reach the sweat sixteen that Iowa has not been to for 23 years before any talk of going farther in this tournament.
Talk about over the top....

You lost me on this part, who are the 5 NBA players on the Purdue roster?
Ivey is near the top of every draft board. Williams and Edey on the board. And Purdue always has young talent that emerges and is drafted. Lots of talent on that team. They just don’t play as well as a team as iowa has of late.

You can take up that over the top issue with people like Clark Kellogg and Dick Vitale and Jordan Bohannon, who yesterday said the goal is to win it all, and he wasn’t kidding.

I watched the game against Davidson, only two takeaways that matter:
- Davidson is terrible
- Richmond has two good players - their PG and their center. Neither matchups worry me.

Foster Loyer got runout of the big ten. He could barely play in the league.

Their point guard played 40 minutes in all four tournament games and averaged 38 minutes a game during the regular season. In the last nine games in the regular season, he averages 40 minutes a game which includes a 45 minute overtime game on February 9. He does not appear to ever get in foul trouble, but if he did get a couple of early fouls that would make things very difficult for Richmond.

Our sixth year senior and your sixth senior prolly both had walk-on cameos for The Golden Girls! I'll look for the episode on Hulu 🤣

In that regard, while JBo IS the all-time B1G leader in 3-point FGs, he did work long and hard at it. As in, six years long!

Thanks, F Spider, good review.

We call your Grant Golden and raise you one Jordan Bohannon. Maybe they can meet at half court in their rockers and reminisce about the good ol' days.

You AD was also a member of IOWA's 1982 Rose Bowl team

IMO, this is the deal, right there. At the beginning of the year, it was "let's see how Keegan does against B1G defenses". Then it was "let's see how it goes the second trip through the league". We just went through the league tournament and NOBODY could figure out how to stop him - and these are teams that have seen and scouted him all year. Even when he's "off" he scores 20. If the 3s drop, this is a legit tournament team that is a very bad draw for most teams.

Iowa will be a double digit favorite. Easy win. Will be close to a double digit favorite against Providence if Providence wins.

And according to Wikipedia and multiple sources, they stole their name and mascot from Cleveland.

Richmond used to be called the Colts.

and their logo looks much more like a tick than a spider.

They have no authentic or original identity and they will lose

Iowa has had problems where they need to double the post, the other team can shoot and make threes (of course), and rebounding. Rebounding shouldn't be an issue. If Iowa can defend Golden in the post without doubling we should be fine there as well. He isn't overly big so hopefully Kris and Rebraca can do the job. We can then defend the 3 point-line and not give up open threes. Joe T may need to play a bigger roll if Gilyard gets going. On offense we need to take care of the ball and make the open shots.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm but they did have 4 NBA players. 2 currently in the league, one next year, and one the following.
Exactly. I was not being sarcastic at all. I’d be willing to bet that on Purdue‘s current roster there are at least five NBA players. And on Iowa’s roster last year we will see that there were and will be at least five NBA players, just not all drafted the same year. I was just making a simple and quite obvious point

Who from Iowa has significant NBA potential besides Keegan?

kris
Sandfort
perkins?

I don’t know Purdue’s roster as well, but I’ve seen them play a half a dozen times this year and they have a ton of talent.

Wtf is up with Cayo's free throw release? It gave me the shivers.
I have no idea lol I cringe each time he shoots it. Would you believe me if I told you he was a 70+ % FT shooter last year? He was, but idk what happened between last year and this. Either way hope most of his points are FTs are and 2s. He can be sneaky good if you don't account for him but is a non threat as a shooter.

Their mascot is a spider and they have a spider handler (spider man) hold a live spider at games. Their beloved spider is named Rich the Spider.
Now I feel pretty good about not being able to get to the game. Thanks.

I wouldn't say stole though they did adopt the name after Cleveland.

“There was a star pitcher named Puss Ellyson, and they said his lanky arms and stretching kick confused batters,” said Jana Ross Woodson, Richmond’s Assistant AD of Marketing and Fan Development. “The writer for the Times-Dispatch used the name of The Spider to describe him and the members of his team.”

Very glad that when Cleveland renamed they didn't pick the Spiders. They obviously didn't feel like it was theirs.

On a side note love the posters coming over to our board. Normally we don't like schools with black and gold colors (See VCU) but you guys are alright!

Edey is not an NBA player.
Yeah i'm not sure how he could play in today's NBA. Can only go in 3-4 minute spurts and can't guard anyone away from the basket. Ogundele got the ball on the mid-block, was able to spin past him and get to the rim.

I am not getting ahead of myself but I just have a hard time after 3+ days of getting the legs back that we do not shoot a higher %, especially from 3. Rebounding and getting out and going! If we are on pace for out rebounding them and scoring towards the 85 point mark, we are in FINE shape. They have a nice team but I don't see them keeping up with the pace long term throughout the game. A concern MIGHT be a bit of a letdown but the depth and makeup of this team seems too tough for that to happen overall.

The Steelers got the colors from yellow jackets, obviously. Bright yellow and black are signals for danger all over nature.
And some birds have yellow and black eyes. Exactly Iowas colors. So…
