Overall very average wrestling on the mat tonight. Lower weights are not good. Bowman might have impressed me more than most of the wrestlers outside of Stoll. This team needs Lee, Marinelli and Downey in the lineup. If Downey doesn't work out, Warner needs to wrestle this year also. 125 through 141 right now is weak. The Hawks won, but one of the worst wrestling performances I've watched in many of years. Go Hawks!!!

Lee is too injured and, imo, too small. Needs a year of healing and building so he can come out and reach his potential.

No sense risking everything with him on this year's team.
These injuries and weight issues suck. Guess it's a rebuilding year and hope for the best. Sorensen, Kemerer, Downey and Stoll are the only chances at the NCCAs (possibly Wilke). Go Hawks!!!

You don't know shit. Wait and watch

Why point out anything other than the obvious? Iowa has 3, maybe 4, guys that have no reason to be wrestling in an Iowa singlet. Just flat terrible job by the Brands boys and staff in failing to identify quality wrestlers. What sucks the most is that when the primary sports of football and basketball aren't getting it done you look to alternatives like wrestling or dare I say an activity like baseball to pick it up. Doesn't look like wrestling is going to get it done this year.

"imo, too small."

Spencer is not too small. Attend a practice-- often he will be wrestling guys in higher weight classes.

I don't know if he is going to stay on redshirt or not--. But what I do know is the eye test to me says he is the real deal.

I would add Gunther to that list.

He is the real deal. Which is why I want the young man to have a shot at being a 4x champ. That means giving him a RS year to heal.

IMO he has been wrestling up one or two weight classes the last couple of years, and his body has taken a pounding. Look at the video of him standing next to double-P; Perez looks massive next to Lee. Heal, grow, and let him come out and start contributing to Iowa teams that might be relevant.

This year's team is not relevant.

After last night’s performance you either have to fall into one of two camps. 1. Redshirt everyone and take it in the shorts this year. 2. Throw the kitchen sink: free Lee, Murin 133, Lugo 141 (if possible), Warner 197. From a team standpoint nothing else makes sense. From an individual standpoint there may be other desires and I don’t envy coach with regard to those decisions...
P.S. even with the kitchen sink I give us a 1/10 chance of pulling off a title. Without all of the above there is literally zero chance of sniffing the top 2.

IMO TnT assume too much responsibility for the performance of some of our wrestler. As a result, some of our wrestlers don't get the message that it on them to perform. We have at least two wrestlers that need be sat down.

I'm sad to say this, but Turk is probably correct in thinking he won't be benched.

Tom and Terry assume 100% responsibility for what's on the mat. As a result, the message sent to a poorly motivated wrestler is you bear 0% responsibility. We're seeing this play out.

I'd bench two of our wrestler and replace them with anyone - doesn't matter. Then let them fight it out at the Midlands. Message sent.

Sad state of affairs on this board when one requests Spooner presence

Yep............sounds like someone still drinking this early in the AM after a long hard night.............

This team is what it is....it’s a rebuilding year...enjoy the positives any opportunity you get....Bowman has been a suprise...Gunther and Wilke look much improved...Sorenson and Kemerer are hammers....Kaleb Young gives all he’s got...could be wrong but pretty sure they aren’t going to bench Wilke to burn Warner’s redshirt...with PD3 coming in Wilke would be odd man out if Warner wrestles....25 through 41 are downright painful to watch though.... too bad Lee can’t wrestle all three weights ;)

I'd definitely give the next few starts to Happel and Glynn, just to send as message to Turk and Laux.

My god. The sky isnt falling, but in many eyes, it has already fallen.

Come on guys. This was our first real competition of the year, in a year that we knew was going to be down. I cant believe anyone on here didnt understand that??

We are going to have more than 4 AAs but we arent going to challenge for this years title. Get over it. Even if we throw the "kitchen sink" at it, as someone else said, we most likely arent challenging. There are too many quality teams this year for them all to have enough key injuries to allow us to climb into contention.

Injuries? They suck, yes. Some kids are going to heal and will be fine, while others are going to have to wrestle through injuries and some wont wrestle at all. This isnt football where there are 4-8 kids that are ALL ON full scholarship that the coaches can slide in and play(tristen wirfs for example). Even in basketball, a shooting guard can play point and the other way around. It's a different beast all together when talking about changing weights.

Do I admit we have more holes in our lineup than I would like? Hell yeah we do. I dont think we should ever have a hole at Iowa, but it seems we have always had one. Even in the Gable years we never had 10 AA's

I guess I dont see the point in re-hashing the"TNT haven't done their jobs" threads all over again. We are on our way to being a top team. It just isn't going to happen this year and the sooner some of you realize that the more you will be able to enjoy what we do have on the mat.

BTW, we did win the dual, right?

GO HAWKS!!

We might be on our way to bring a top team in the future, ON PAPER right now, but I have news for you... Our opponents are looking to up their games as well.

We are, in fact, playing catch up. And nobody is going to wait around while that happens. We were weak last year, and appear to be weaker this season. That’s not rebuilding.

Dub, I respect what you are saying and for the most part agree with you. Don't get me wrong by my previous post. I am not happy where we are at right now, but I am trying to be a realist about it. I have never said that we arent behind right now(its clear that we are) and that we arent playing catch up(you are right) BTW, I can guarantee you the Brands aren't happy right now, much less the kids.

But at this point, we arent the Iowa that we used to be and PSU(and maybe fOSU) are. Do I like it? Hell no. Do I think we have the kids in the room right now to challenge for a title next year through 2021 or so? I certainly hope so. Do I think the staff needs to keep recruiting their asses off? Of course, cause I know what PSU, fOSU and OSU are bringing in.

I guess I just dont know what good comes from beating a dead horse so many damn times that I barely want to open and read a new thread. It almost always comes back to something negative. How the kids dont really want to wrestle, or that TnT arent getting the job done and need to move on. It just wears on me as we do still have a lot to cheer for and we still all love this sport and our team.

Again. . . . Amen, bro.

Dub is a good cat, and I know he wants the best for the Hawks. We're all human, and we all get frustrated. I get that. And while I don't think anyone is less of a fan if he/she expresses some frustration, I do think we're all better off if we focus on the positive and what we can actually do to help move things in the right direction.

WDM. Yeah. That wasn't directed at DUB himself, by any means, but rather at us as a group

Valid points all the way around. Win or lose last night we all agree there are issues this year, the question I have

Did the wrestling last night help create an environment that is attractive to high level recruits?

Great question Cid. I honestly dont know the answer to it. I'd like to think Iowa is always going to be an attractive place for recruits because of history and fan base. But we know that only goes so far, right? look where we are at.

With that said, I'd like to think that a recruit would look at the returning wrestlers for the next 2-3 years and the kids that are in redshirt right now and see that something special could be right around the corner. That they would want to be part of it. Not to mention the potential of a new facility in the hopefully not too distant future.

But back to your question. I hope so but I'm not sure. With that said, I'd also think that if those same recruits came back in January they would see a completely different team, offensive attack and results. Again, I hope so. :)

Hoping so. Let the fur fly a little bit, pick an ankle, shoot, shoot and shoot some more.

Its never going to get better unless Iowa starts playing on the same field recruiting wise. Money talks. Always has, always will, no matter the history, fan turnout, etc. I don't think this coaching staff has it in their character to make the promises others are making.

If you mean extra for clinics and or incedentals, it has nothing to do with the coaching staff and everything to do with Iowa’s compliance department. They do not look the other way, they monitor everything unlike many other schools who don’t want to know and just look the other way. Hard to say you are doing things wrong when you are doing things as the rules and regulations dictate. However, you are correct our coaching staff is not about bending the rules.

One thing is for sure -- our staff will play by the rules. The same can't be said of some other programs, unfortunately. Hawk fans can be very proud that the Iowa program is following the letter of the law. This doesn't mean we can't match or exceed other top programs in recruiting, however. Continuing to strengthen the HWC and building the top facility in the nation will go a long way toward increasing momentum in recruiting. Yes, money does talk, and it can still speak very loudly even if used within the rules. And this is also where Iowa fans can help, as we've discussed many times. All of us can have an impact, whether it's great or small. Collectively, our impact can be huge. www.hwcdonor.com

I do not think it is a bout the results. It is about the lack of aggression and urgency. Personally I liked Young's effort even though he got pounded. I did not like the effort of some others. If our wrestlers are aggressive you hear very few complaints outside a few negative nellies. I remember a kid named Grunder who did not have a lot of success in the win column but was a fan favorite because he let it all out every match. I can watch our guys get beat, but I dont need to waste my time watching guys down 3 points not shooting guys off the mat or guys coming out and getting taken down 3 times in the 1st period because they are flat footed and seem disinterested. I expected us to take some lumps but I did not expect to see the boring wrestling I saw Friday night. It was just one night yes, but it was painful to watch from an effort standpoint. At least their Heavy tried to beat Stoll. We had guys who lost who really never put themselves in a position to have a shot. I try to be positive for the most part, but that wasnt even close the best each individual had in them. The sky isnt fallen but most Iowa fans expect aggresive wrestling win or lose.
