SIAP but it appears Rick Pitino is "coach 2" from the FBI complaint. Directly involved in funneling money.

Sure as hell makes the NCAA "enforcement" division look weak as hell

In fairness to the NCAA "enforcement" division, they do not have subpoena power. If I recall correctly, the NCAA would have had Miami FB dead to rights on the Nevin Shapiro deal, but they obtained the evidence illegally through Shapiro's bankruptcy attorney (in violation of her ethical duties) and were not able to use it against Miami.

If they had subpoena power, there still might be a competence issue, but not an impotence issue. The NCAA enforcement division has almost none of investigatory tools that real law enforcement relies upon.

Convicted or not, all their dirty laundry will be out in the open. I'm not sure the Federal conviction rate, but I'm sure it's up there. There's always that slim chance. I would hope their whole case can't be put to question by a day or two of research from this guy.

This is correct. People need to remember the NCAA is a member organization. It serves at the behest of its member institutions, which are headed by presidents. The NCAA only has the power granted to it by its members. And it's probably a good idea that a member organization doesn't have subpoena power. I know I'm not becoming part of an industry organization that has the power to subpoena me or my organization if someone gets mad at me. As it should be, only certain government entities have the power to do that.

There is a whole cottage legal industry of defending schools against NCAA investigations. The playbook is always the same. Some lower-level staffer is the scapegoat that loses his/her job. The powerful schools hire defense lawyers who formerly worked for the NCAA and have connections. They take just enough self-imposed penalties to look like they are taking the issue seriously but not inflict real long-term damage. All while saying "the current players don't deserve to be punished." Or some other version of BS.

Perhaps something to come out of this is a FBI division dedicated to rooting out corruption in amateur athletics. Or the university presidents growing a pair and actually overseeing their athletic departments.

When it comes to basketball, the NCAA doesn't want to do shit. That's their Cash cow. That's where the NCAA makes most of their revenue. They tried to let UNC off the hook, twice. They slapped Pitino on the wrist with a 5 game suspension for providing hookers to recruits.

I thought football was the cash cow, although basketball brings in a lot of money at the big schools.

If anybody is interested in listening to Book Richardson's (Arizona) court hearing from Tuesday, the audio can be found in that link above.

Please please please get Kansas wrapped in this too. Jayhawk fans here in KC are damn near impossible to tolerate.

I've found Jayhawk fans to be basically intolerable anywhere I have encountered them.....

It's Friday and too much seriousness for the week. Let's get ready for the weekend and one last serious question, where do I sign up for Fran's Breast Inspection (FBI) team? ;)
