The best movie you ever saw in your whole life in a Drive-In:

I noticed a mention of Drive-ins in the "I have never" thread.

Well, I grew up in Iowa in the 1950's and 1960's ... the glory years of drive in movies and have the sense that some people have no idea what they missed. Movies that we all watched in drive-in theaters were of a special cut and I am sorry, but many of these were not to be missed as part of a Midwestern growing-up experience. Movies about space invaders, movies about Zombies, movies about women in prison, movies about sicko Nazi Doctors ... and yes even movies about car racing and moonshining.

My favorite of the whole bunch? James Caan in "Red Line 7000." Directed by Howard Hawks!

I kind of expect this to be a short thread since Drive-ins are not around any more ... but what the hell, it is appropriate to simply mention films that ... in the day ... properly would have opened at the local drive-in. That will loosen it a bit.
Buddy and I were under-age and would go to a drive-in to drink beer. Never paid attention to what the show was. It was "In the Heat of the Night." Almost forgot to drink beer.

The next best two would be "The Great Escape" and "The Pawnbroker."

Hmmmmm.....it just occurred to me that Rod Steiger was in two of those.

Psycho, though I'd seen it before, but those with me hadn't.

I've probably told this story more than once, but my best Drive-In experience was taking an Amarillo girl to the double feature of "Up In Smoke" and "The Warriors." AMC Pacer with a cooler in the hatch full of Budweiser and Boones Farm. After sitting through my non-stop laughing during Up In Smoke, and listening to about 30 minutes of my waxing poetic about the amazing directing going on in The Warriors, the little gal finally interrupted me to say, "Would you shut up and f*ck me you damn Yankee!"

Never let it be said that I don't oblige a girls' wishes...

Nearly did, they've been starting to grow again recently.

The drive in is on Rte 6 east of town. Gets absolutely packed if the weather is decent.

Oops, I should have said it's west of town on Rte 6, not east. It's about 2/3 of the way from the Porn in the Corn (the Lion's Den) towards Newton.

I'm only 55 and had numerous drive-in screens to choose from while growing up.

Yep, it was hit and miss when my dad was on active duty. When we moved to Iowa when I was 13, there were quite a few around Des Moines. The Capital on E14th, the Pioneer (I think that was the name) on SE 14th, the one out on 63rd and Grand (The Valley?). I think there was another 1-2 in the country outside of DSM also.

That sounds great ... "introducing Jacqueline Bisset" ... Jacqueline Bisset’s entrance, rising from the Malibu surf, after losing her top, ..surfing ... motorcycles ... fast cars ... Rock and Roll ... Sunset Strip nightlife ...

Classic Drive-in movie fare!!

And I have had a thing for Jacqueline Bisset ever since!

The erotic adventures of Pinnochio. Runner up - Russ Meyer's 'Super Vixens'.

... Six "bountiful women" ... Addresses the issue of "breast fixation v. felatio"

Supervixens was a classic!

I do not think I ever caught on the extent of International distribution received by any of these films. Every film mentioned on this thread had extensive international viewership.

My age and I also remember quite a few drive-in theaters. Only ever went to two of them.

Two outstanding movies. Though I saw both in regular theaters.

This is kind of what I was getting at ... What it was like to grow up by going to drive-in movies ... or rather coming of age through those experiences.

Imagine! Many of us discovered Jacqueline Bisset at a drive-in movie. She is definitely an icon of the era!

I only recall going to the drive in in Coralville once. It was a triple header. A Shaggy DA movie. One of the Herbie the Love Bug movies, and something that might have been scary. If a sometimes HROT poster who was there that night remembers the third one feel free to mention it. I think a fellow poster was there. It was a few years ago.
Any idea from the old folks what is up where the old drive in was at? It wasn't directly on Hwy 6, I think it was on 5th Street?

Was it this one. Precursor to the " Billy Jack " movies. I know I saw it at the Coralville drive in:

The old drive in was west of 12th avenue and between 7th and 5th streets. I helped build the 4 apartments that are there now.

Halloween at the old drive-in theater SE of Charles City.

Many a movie we went there. Sometimes via the front and back seats and sometimes via the trunk of a car. I also recall several times the speakers accidently became detached from their wires. The Airplane movies were the best. As a young teen probably the movie with Chesty Morgan was in were she dispatched her male suitors by smothering them with her ginormous breasteses .

My favorite scene of hers was from "The Deep" where she was wearing a wet t-shirt. I'm 67 and I still get wood when I think of that scene.

She showed a lot more of herself in "Secrets", co-starring Robert Powell, who also played the title character in "Jesus of Nazareth".

This movie scared us so bad in 1972 that we went back night after night with different girls just because we knew they'd want to snuggle up close to us when the gory scenes occurred.

I don't know the name of the movie that was playing, I just remember driving past a drive-in theater and seeing naked women on the screen between the pine trees that surrounded the lot.

Star Wars. One of my earliest memories.

Me too. Saw it at the Starlite in Waterloo and also one of my earliest memories. I still remember cars honking and leaving because it started late. And I remember sitting on my Dad's lap and just being in awe during the entire thing.

Never been to a drive in because I'm under 70.

There are 3 Drive Ins in Iowa still and I have taken my kids to two of them. They are a great deal for families. One is in Newton, one in Spirit Lake and one near Maqouketa. The only one I have not been to is the Spirit Lake one. Its a great deal...you get 2 first run movies for a lot less than most theatres charge for one movies. You can also bring in your own food. The sound is also now through a low wattage FM transmitter so you can use a car stereo or boom box( those do still exist I think) and the sound is very good.

Toy Story III was very good. We have seen a lot of the Marvel movies at the Drive Ins. Its a good time.

Anyone remember The Oasis on north Brady in Davenport? Wow, what a dump. Did show pron in the 70s (I hear).

We used to walk up there with the hope that they did still show the pron, and hang out in the hallways of that little dirtbag hotel that was just to the north of there, trying to catch a look through the window at the end of the hallway, all the while being chased by hotel people trying to boot us out.

Saw my only drive-in double feature there, it was Cannonball Run and I forget what the other one was, maybe Alien or something?

As a kid saw Star Wars in a drive in and a few other movies. Then not any till I I saw the South park movie in the Cedar Falls one on University. It closed shortly after that.

Spirit Lake is close so I may have to take grandkids sometime for the experience.
