This is another fabulous pic! Look at all the emotion and physicality here. Let’s break this down.

#3 Cordell Confronts Carr’s FGA in paint.

A. Minnesota’s Marcus Carr drives paint and launches himself at the rim, only to be met with by Cordell Pemsl firmly standing his ground, resulting in Carr contorting himself physically to avoid an obvious would-be block, resulting in a missed shot.

Although this is not a blocked shot, it clearly is an altered shot, a missed shot, a defense of the lane, preventing easy points at the rim, points prevention by an interior big that has moved into help defense from the penetrating point guard.

B. Emotional contortions too. I love the expression on both faces. Carr is all like “WTH, this idea is effed”, while Pemsl has a firm upper lip and is “not today, not now, not here”, which is the essence of help defense, lane and rim protection, and improving FG% defense in the paint, which Iowa has been 13th most of year, but not with the 2Big configuration.

C. The 2Big 3-headed Monster. This clear defensive action only takes place when Pemsl is on the court with another Big, this doesn’t not occur in 4 guards sets, as Pemsl would not be in the game

I think that Iowa will win at tMSU by winning the game in the paint, having a greater 2pt FG%, recall with tOSU, the 2Big 3-Headed Monster had 16 FGs with Kriener-Pemsl going 7-8. Look for Tillman to get in foul trouble and for tMSU to struggle on offense vs this newly re-tooled defensive Iowa team.

#2. Kriener posterizes Liddell.

Today’s avatar is a really great sports action pic, ‘The Agony of Defeat’ , props to the guy that got this one.

Here we have Liddel’s shot getting massively and decisively rejected and the agony on his face is priceless. As you see Kriener’s rejected the shot at the rim is the essence of a rim protector, is the essence of points prevention at the rim, it’s like a goal line stand, there no room to retreat and it mano v Mano and the best man wins.

But wait, there is more, we also see POY Garza -also- flying in for rim protection, as its an example of the 2Big’s again working in tandem to defend the rim, together, and additive strength.

But there’s more. This is a rough game played by big and rough men. Liddell is going in strong, flailing into the net as the ball gets decisively rejected from his grasp, and Liddell has given a strong elbow to the face of Kriener, but kriener plays literally thru the elbow sandwich to make the play,

And theirs Garza, literally flying in from behind, pushing his way -through Kriener- in a physical attempt to get to the rim protection and prevent the points scoring opportunity.

Physical play from all 3, physical protection at the rim, by both 2Bigs playing in tandem.

We will never see anything like this with a 4 guard lineup

Yes! And this pic is awesome, thanks,

If I may add to my anthology, look at the 2Big defense contesting the drive, there are literally 2Bigs, both in position to block this shot, both defending the paint, both preventing easy FGA at the rim.

This is why this team is 4-1 with wins over MD, tOSU, and @MN and @ Syracuse. what a KenPom this team would have....
