The Double Foul

Bad call. I thought Luka's other fouls were legit, although I didn't see the charge well. Ayala is pretty good at acting.

Use to think Carstensen was decent. He’s F’n awful
.

To my credit, I’ve always thought Cartensen was terrible.

Doesn’t he live in Iowa City ( I think that’s the guy but not totally sure)? I think he actually goes out of his way not to favor Iowa for the optics of it.

Can someone confirm if I’m remembering that correctly that he lives in Iowa City area out of curiosity?

You have to wonder if the refs wanted the Terps in this game. BS fouls to Iowa’s big men early crippling then.

how about the shot clock violation where Cowan hit a three. I went back and watched it. It was clearly after the shot clock expired. Fran protested, yet they wouldn’t review it. BS.

This kinda **** worries me if B1G refs are calling it. He has earned the respect of refs in the league as being a hard-nosed player who plays the game right. Worst nightmare is Iowa being in a 2nd round game in the tourney with PAC-12 refs who whistle our dude up every time he fights for position on the post.

That said... if JW and CJF make threes and free throws like they usually do, Iowa STILL wins this game.

"Double fouls" are such a weak move by refs. Pick someone or pull the players aside and tell them to take it easy, if they are shoving each other.

I'd also be interested in why we feel it is necessary to track fouls for players and foul them out of the game for getting 5 fouls. This allows Refs to have WAY too much impact on games.

Getting FTs is enough reward for getting fouled

None of Garza’s fouls were clear fouls. The double foul & the offensive push down low were two atrocious calls that greatly killed our momentum. I’m not concerned one bit by this game. Fought hard & had a chance, especially if some 3’s fell our way, and we were playing against the refs all night. Let’s beat the piss out of Illinois Sunday.

I agree with your first point

The foul limit exists so “hack a Shaq” doesn’t become a strategy in every game and cause the end of games to take an hour. FTs are a reward for a team like Iowa, but not so much for many others

should have gotten 2 tech's for flopping it was so bad.
I thought the flop itself was pretty convincing. If the ref had seen and thought about the contact it probably wouldn't have been called.

The key to the game was the first two fouls on Garza. Everyone was wanting to see the match up between these two teams. The two fouls weren't the kind of calls you make on one of the better players in the country, in the first five minutes of a game with a so much at stake.

Really disappointing.

Don't know where he lives now, but DJ grew up in Iowa City and went to City High.

While the double foul call was bad, I have to disagree with you regarding his body of work as a ref. From what I can tell seeing him on TV multiple games, he looks like one of the better officials in the B1G.

He used to be one of the best. But he’s gotten progressively awful the last 3 years.

And I’m not just talking Iowa games. I’ve watched him a lot in all B1G games. I don’t know what has happened to him but I can’t belive how bad he’s gotten & how quickly.

It has to be a mental thing with him. Maybe something is wrong in his personal life. Idk

First, I don't believe there are Big Ten officials like there are in football. These crews do whatever games they want from any conference.

Second, the officiating isn't good but it's sadly the best there is right now. Watch women's officials, they are putrid. But who would want to officiate? Everyone hates you, questions your integrity when your team loses, makes fun of you, and questions your decisions... and that's just the 3rd grade rec league.

Consistency is key........

Or acting like you want to be there in the case of 3rd grade rec leagues.....................

If these 2 want to play in the pro's they need to have ice water in their veins. with the bigs in foul trouble I think the pressure was too much for them. without Garza and Kriener we will live and die by the three

The only other game I remember this crew doing was the game at Nebraska. Horrible call that benefited Maryland as Graza had to go to the bench with his 3rd foul.

The blind shitbags the B1G finds while scraping the bottom of the barrel for referees make the game almost unwatchable. It's a shame for the fans, but a travesty for the players.
Do you want to ref? Lots of good people don't want to coach or ref anymore because of all the shit they get..
It's going to get worse....Use to be ex athletes, coaches, would officiate after they were finished playing, coaching,,,,now they say why the heck should I put up with all the crap fans and parents are dishing out,,,not worth it! This summer as I saw police come to a freshman baseball game and remove a parent who was giving the umpire and opposing catcher crap ---Its gotten crazy.

I think the play of the game was Kriener's tech. He was going to the line for the and-1 but still had to bark. While Till and Pemsl held their own, that second foul on Kreiner really put Iowa in a bad position.

Do you really believe Kreiner deserved a T for THAT? Don't you know that other teams are in Iowa's face constantly with trash talk, and have been for decades, yet I can't recall the last time an Iowa opponent was called for a T because of something said. If the ref didn't like it, all he had to do was give Kreiner a warning. Kreiner casually said what he said and walked calmly to the FT line. That T was ridiculous.

Meanwhile, Maryland players are running around the court whining and gesturing and arguing on almost every call, but that's OK. Really?

C'mon. Kreiner, who was raked across the face, wasn't at fault. The refs were.

Don’t agree with Kriener’s response that got the T, but even the announcers were talking about how Maryland could have gotten a T for running around after not liking a foul call, and they didn’t say many things against Maryland so that stood out. It’s not even that calls are consistently bad but there is just NO consistency.

I was surprised they T'd him up for that and I didn't like the call, but that's an easy one to avoid. I get his frustration, but if you watch the replay, whatever he said was enough that Pemsl was immediately pushing him back. As bad as the couple calls on Garza were, they're at least in the action and viewing angle can impact perspective. Kriener totally could have walked away or talked in a much less confrontational way.

If you asked him about it face to face right now, I'm guessing that's exactly what he'd tell you.

I'm not hating on Kriener, I enjoy watching him play. I was just pointing out that it was probably THE most avoidable foul of the game and it came at a time that was absolutely critical. The Hawks needed a good long stretch from him with Garza out and that T immediately put him on the bench with 2 fouls with more than 10 min to go in the first half. It was costly for sure.

Agreed. Normally, I wouldn't have been looking for a T on some of Maryland's dancing, but I thought the T on Kriener was going to be a sign that they weren't going to put up with extra stuff (they also gave Maryland a pretty quick warning on messing with the ball before Iowa's inbounds).....but then to your point, not a lot of follow-up/consistency.
