The Food and Drug Administration just announced it is banning the use of a popular synthetic food dye

I can attest to seeing a dramatic behavior change in young ones when foods containing this ingredient are consumed vs not. I'm for it.
Yep, and it’s about GD time!
Had a parent tell me that one of their kids gets super hyper if they have red die about 10 years ago. I didn’t realize there was a correlation until then but it really does affect some kids.

It's funny those in this thread are upset it took this long for someone to do something, are the same ones applauding Reynolds for finally doing something about the cancer rates in Iowa.

A majority of us can't see the forest through the trees anymore. We get all caught up in D vs R.

That’s because people are dumb.

Can you give us more detail? I’m genuinely interested.

Didn’t we just have a thread about this topic in regard to Kennedy…where all the resident libs said he was talking junk science about these dyes?

JFC, yes it's RFK who woke everyone up with his BS.

Many food safety advocates have been concerned for decades about the substance's presence in the U.S. food system.

I've heard about Yellow Dye 5 and Mt Dew for 3 decades now.

Hard to answer without said quote from resident libs.

Not exactly the same thing, but my daughter was diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder years ago that landed her in the hospital for 10 days and she ended up receiving 6 months of Chemo to treat it and daily prescription meds. My wife became obsessed with nutrition and eliminated pretty much all preservatives, seed oils and most synthetic ingredients (including harmful dyes). We eat a mostly all-organic diet. We’ve really seen a change in her overall health over the past several years. It’s anecdotal, but the change in diet have helped diminish her symptoms more than any of the prescriptions meds have. We are also big fans of the Yuka app. (It’s the one with the little carrot). It's a free app that allows you to scan most products found at the grocery store. It analyses the ingredients and gives you a score based on the overall health of the product. It takes into account sugar, calories, fat, potentially harmful additives etc. It’s been a game changer for us. Check it out, it’s kind of addicting. 🫨

This does not impact Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries (except in CA), which uses Red 40.

So I thank god for the freedom to continue to cut the shit out of the roof of my mouth.

it crazy when you compare the US to EUR ingredient lists

The problem with whack jobs like RFK Jr. is not that they are wrong about everything, but that they take a kernel of truth and extrapolate a whole incredibly stupid conspiracy theory based on it. Artificial food dye chemicals are found in the brain after death, but the effects are not anywhere near known. Europe and California do the right thing to ban these, IMO. But when California does it, it's "communism".

Basically, RFK Jr. reminds me of General Ripper in Dr. Strangelove every time he speaks..

@ihhawk thats not even a stretch…its a complete whiff. From what you quoted:

“Europe and California do the right thing to ban these, IMO.”

That poster actually agrees with banning the dyes.

Missing is that poster saying RFK Jr opinion about food dyes is/was based on junk science.

Feel free to try again. Should be easy since “all” the residents stated as much. I’m honestly curious if a poster committed to what you claim.

FDA is responsible for the safety of the food in this country.

They finally outlaw a dye known for 30 years to be carcinogenic in animal testing.

Criminals.

Wouldn't be surprised to see their budget jump >5% this year.
Yes, the oligarch corporate overlords that run our country spend a lot of money bribing our politicians.

Just spitballin’ here, but what if the oligarch corporations used the regulations to prevent competition instead of serve consumers?

You mean the regulations that the oligarch corporations pay a sheet ton of money to get written in their favor?

You all are a bunch of anti-business Marxists! Let the market decide. Give me red dye #3 or give me death!

You all are a bunch of anti-business Marxists who want to live in a nanny state where the government protects you from everything. Isn't it on the ingredient list? Let the market decide. Give me red dye #3 or give me death!

I am all for this!

TL;DR Summary:

The FDA is banning the use of Red Dye No. 3 (erythrosine) due to evidence it can cause cancer in animals, though it hasn't been directly linked to cancer in humans. This synthetic dye has been used in foods like candies, colored beverages, baked goods, and medicines. The ban follows concerns from food safety advocates and states like California, which outlawed it in 2023. Food manufacturers must remove it by January 15, 2027, and drug manufacturers by January 18, 2028.

Red Dye No. 3 is commonly found in products such as candy (especially seasonal types), cakes, ice creams, maraschino cherries, colored drinks, and even medications like acetaminophen and fluoxetine. Many countries, including Japan and those in the EU, have already restricted or banned its use. Consumers are advised to check labels for "FD&C Red No. 3," "FD&C Red 3," or "Red 3."

Here is a list of some common foods that may contain Red 3 — per Lurie, the FDA, the CSPI and Amanda Beaver, a dietitian at Houston Methodist hospital.

  • Candy, especially seasonal candies, such as candy corn and dyed marshmallows
  • Cakes and cupcakes
  • Frozen desserts, such as ice pops and ice creams with strawberry flavoring
  • Frostings
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Fruit cocktails
  • Colored beverages
  • Protein shakes
  • Vegetarian meats
  • Bacon bits
  • Sausages
  • Strawberry milk
  • Puddings
