Started on this day 1871.

I sometimes think of what the firefighters faced. Chicago had 185 firefighters at the time and 17 horse powered ‘steam engines’.

And it wasn’t even the deadliest fire that day. The Peshtigo fire estimated to have killed 1500-2500 people.

The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned in the American city of Chicago during October 8–10, 1871. The fire killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles (9 km2) of the city including over 17,000 structures, and left more than 100,000 residents homeless.[3]The fire began in a neighborhood southwest of the city center. A long period of hot, dry, windy conditions, and the wooden construction prevalent in the city, led to the conflagration. The fire leapt the south branch of the Chicago River and destroyed much of central Chicago and then leapt the main stem of the river, consuming the Near North Side

The Peshtigo fire deserves a lot more appreciation. It got overshadowed by Chicago, but was much larger and more deadly.
Over 1,100 dead. Reported fire whirlwinds. There's legend of a reverend who tried to save them by pleading for them to jump in the river, but people complained about getting wet. They claimed if this was God's judgement, they should accept their fate in the fire than try to save themselves in the river.
