The handout to farmers we expected...

Pickups are almost always universally foolish and utv's being enclosed really don’t make either practical for grain farmers.
Speaking of UTV's, there's a cattle guy just north of Decorah, that bought two modified Suzuki Sidekicks for the price of one decent used, JD Gator. Pretty ingenious if you ask me.

You know it's a cult when 'libertarian' Trad is defending socialized agriculture - literally direct payments from the government to farmers - with the kicker being that the payments are needed because of anti-free trade measures and fallout from a trade war.

Add in James V still living in his concrete pouring days - back when the Republicans were the free markets, free people party and weren't keen on handouts - wake up James, your party is a cult that doesn't have any principles.

I was born and raised on a 240 acre farm in the 50s. Dad milked cows until the day he retired.
Milking cows convinced me I never wanted that life.
As has been stated, today's farms are either corporation owned or a family LLC consisting of a dad and his sons.
The bigger you are, the more the govt supports you.
Is their risk??? Hell, yeah.

But it's a subsidized industry.

So why slap a tariff on Canadian dairy products?
Those tariffs on Canadian dairy products were completely unnecessary and borne of ignorance.

Maybe if Jimmy Carter would have come through for the farmers after exacerbating the farm crisis with his Soviet grain embargo, farmers might still be voting D like they always did in the past...

That's the common refrain, but let's not be so simple minded about the topic..I've seen how lenders operated in the 70's and that was a much bigger factor.

1. I don't have a party. They are both corrupt. Carter did to me what Trump/Musk are doing to the government employees. You are a hypocrite and that's why you lose elections you should win with ease.

2. Despite 16% interest, high fuel prices, deflation of farm assets, I was able to sell off a warehouse and rent instead. Kept making a payroll when I couldn't pay myself, even working for another contractor on the side. After RR assumed office things started looking up, consumer confidence was restored and eventually my business came all the way back and we thrived. No handouts ever taken, just paying a lot of taxes, which is OK because I made a lot of money...

Yet here you are defending subsidies for those who can't or won't make the adjustments to succeed in the market.

Gravity wagons are cheap in comparison and can be useful, especially if farming near your storage. I get why grain carts/semis have become the norm though, but like anything, it's a cost of doing business like any other operation. As for grain carts, you can get a nice, used one for $45-65k. I don't think nice, "in-town" houses in much of Iowa are going for less than $150k anymore..
Wagons are basically useless without wheeled tractors, which many have gone away from. A 1300 bushel cart is 180ish. Closer to 250k for one that will hold 2 semis. If a farmer isn't using primarily 4wd scale tractors even on the planter they aren't at a scale to both support themselves and grow. Obviously they have to be able to afford the equipment to support themselves. Spousal off farm income isn't what it used to be in rural areas.

Not sure why people keep perpetuating the myth that RR soybeans aren’t a net positive for society. There’s some serious science denial on both sides of the spectrum.
Especially considering Roundup Ready soybeans aren’t really a thing anymore. Technology has advanced far beyond that. HT4 and HT5 beans are just down the road.

Why does Canada have a 200% tariff on US dairy products?
Sigh this is a very shallow view. Here is the full picture:

Trump negotiated the USMCA agreement. As part of that, the US agreed to set a threshold for Canadian dairy imports before a tariff kicks in. That threshold was set in such a way that it has never been reached. So yes, there is a theoretical tariff, but it has never been paid because Canada doesnt consume that much from the US.

This tariff has NEVER been paid since the USMCA was signed by Trump.

But ask anyone addicted to right wing media and we have to annex Canada for their own good because they are scamming us on the dairy tariffs. It is insane how divorced y’all are from the real world.

I am actually for farm subsidies. I am not for bailing them out when they vote for a guy pushing trade wars that cause this. Suffer the consequences of your actions.
Exactly this, these dumbasses voted for economic pain, but somehow they get absolved of the consequences because they are farmers.

They are a bunch of generational welfare crybabies who need to find profitable work instead of counting on handouts from the rest of us.

1. Oh, no party now? Great, glad to hear it. How am I hypocrite? I don't run in elections, how could I lose them?

2. Yes, we know you still live in the past. I always thought your Concrete King of the Tri-County was tongue in cheek, self deprecating humor. I suppose no one in real life actually wants to hear your sob/glory days stories, so HORT suffers them. It is hard to believe such a proud - no handouts - fellow's success and failures are so directly linked in your own stories to who occupies the White House.

"Carter did to me...." wahhhhh. "Ronald Regan saved me!"

You may not have a party anymore, but while you're stuck in 40-50 years ago, Ronald Reagan's party turned into a cult.

After reading so many of the comments on this thread... Can someone tell me what the "F" in "DFL" really stands for anymore?

Whaaa. The sacred government employee cow has been gored. The horror. No one cared when the private sector unemployment rate was 15%. Oh, I guess they did, they voted Carter out and the Ds for the next 12 years. Never got the farmers back whom they courted for most of the century...

Yup, and those two planned traits are glyphosate resistant, along with dicamba, glufosinate (similar to glyphosate, which is also a broad spectrum herbicide), plus 2,4-D. I think HT5 will be resistant more post emergent stuff.

It's forever the Carter and Reagan years in the Tri-County. Enjoy the past James, although it doesn't seem like you do.

Even though farm programs have been better funded under Democratic administrations, Reagan bought the GOP decades of good will with massive payout and credit restructuring programs. Basically, the spigot was left on for his entire administration.
