The law is ‘not airtight’: Trump may have a way out of NATO

‘Go it alone’ against who exactly?

We’ve been fighting other people’s wars for a century to enrich banisters and arms merchants.

Doesn’t have to be this way.

Whoever wants to **** around and find out. How the hell am I supposed to know that?

There isn't one person on this board that would be down with sending their sons or daughters to fight and die for Latvian or Lithuanian honor. You know that, I know that, everyone on this board knows that.

So let's just be realistic about this shit. In spite of written NATO obligations, there is zero American appetite for that. And at the end of the day, that will trump everything.
Bet you would be a ok with European sons and daughters defending our country if called.

There would be a Japanese flag flying over Mt. Suribachi if you'd been around in the 30s and 40s. Probably California, Oregon, and Washington, too. In your world view the US was to blame for WW2. We pushed Japan and Germany too far. They were forced into aggression by us. They were entitled to their land grabs, and enslaving others and genocide are just something Americans aren't willing to fight for.

Interesting to note that one of the countries failing to meet their financial obligations is #3's country, Slovenia. Weird that never gets mentioned.

lol at you thinking any of our sons and daughters will be going over to fight for their honor anytime soon. Any potential threat to Lithuania are Latvia would be obliterated by about 6 us drones. Sending our daughters and sons over. lol. Gtfo of here with that shit.

This is all part of being the dominant country and military in the world. We keep others in check. Period, end of story.

What are you talking about? Isolationism and appeasement are where it's at. It worked out great last time!
Better than the hundreds of thousands of lives we’ve lost overseas fighting other people’s wars.
Never mind the trillions spent not making our lives better, and the now greater than trillion dollar annual interest expense we have to show for feeding our MIC.

Ok Chamberlain fanboy.

NATO expansion/NATO creep resulting in regional destabilization.

NATO countries not honoring financial commitments resulting in further financial burden for Americans.

Americans not wanting their sons and daughters dying in Estonia.
You are right. Probably shouldn’t defend those countries. Those folks don’t matter cause they ain’t Americans and more importantly I am sure whoever invades them will just stop there and not go any further.

Why do you want Americans to die in European wars?
Can someone explain the logic behind this?

Do you think anyone on this board wants Americans to die in any war? Do you think NATO member Countries wanted their sons and daughters to die after the 9/11 attack on the U.S.? Yet that is exactly what happened after NATO enacted article 5 after 9/11, It is the only time article 5 has been enacted since NATO was formed and it was to stand in unison with America after America was attacked.

The vast majority of member nations meet or exceed spending targets. Why lie?
Strong front line defenses with reliable allies reduce the chances of war. The weakness you propose only emboldens aggressors,
https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/econographics/whos-at-2-percent-look-how-nato-allies-have-increased-their-defense-spending-since-russias-invasion-of-ukraine/#:~:text=In total, NATO countries now,of their GDP on defense.
Your link shows that only 5 countries were paying their fair share while Trump was president. Even in 2024, there are 8 countries not paying their fair share. There was no lie. Trump was right. The previous link also said Trump has not said publicly that he would leave NATO. So once again, all of this is just projection from the left trying to make Trump look bad. You guys are the liars, not the other way around.

Donald Trump has the equivalent of a 4th-6th grade education, so I will not be shocked if he attempts to abandon something that has operated with great success for 75+ years. NATO is filled with countries/leaders that won't bow to him. He hates that.
Surely all the Republican leaders in the Senate who believe in a strong national defense like Liddle Marco and Lindsey Graham will confirm the US commitment to a strong defense?
It's too bad we didn't elect him 4 years ago when he still had some professionals around him. Now there will be no one to tell him no.

yeah i believe a bunch of countries suddenly woke up just last year to meet the 2% gdp spending target for 2024 in order to protect the nato alliance from trump (if he wins). countries include both france and germany! btw how does this work? not pay for years (decades?) and then hit the mark for just this year or did they have to catch up for the past?

What flag do you think flies over Iwo Jima today?

Probably California, Oregon, and Washington, too.

That you consider that plausible indicates an enormous amount of ignorance about Japan's relative strength and actual threat to the U.S.

In your world view the US was to blame for WW2. We pushed Japan and Germany too far. They were forced into aggression by us. They were entitled to their land grabs, and enslaving others and genocide are just something Americans aren't willing to fight for.
Incorrect, FDR is to blame for U.S. involvement in WW2.
It as no more incumbent upon the U.S. to stop Germany from invading the Soviet Union than it was to stop France from invading Russia, or Prussia from invading France, or any other stupid war the Europeans committed over the centuries.
Likewise, there was no need for the U.S. to try and establish an empire in Asia and become embroiled in conflicts that provided zero benefit to Americans.

But there isn't anyone that wants to.
So we spend trillions finding windmills to tilt at and somehow justify our preposterous MIC.
