The Transfer Portal window opens on Dec 9 for 20 days. "You're gonna have a lot of million-dollar Quarterbacks."

Because average QBs work so well in the NFL too. If you have an average QB you have an average team at best.
Not comparable. The college game is much different.

An elite quarterback is great, but a game manager like Stetson Bennett will do just fine with an elite defense and playmakers around him.

The key is your quarterback needs to be mobile.

Sully is and what did UCLA do? Bennett was at a school full of 4 and 5 stars. We getting those to surround our average QB?

Regarding Bennett and Georgia, do you think this greatly helped their average QB?

I don’t think you understand what I am saying. Iowa is never going to get elite talent like Ohio State and Georgia do. Having a 5 star quarterback is great, but if you don’t have a team around him then you are in the same situation Nebraska finds themselves in.

I would love Iowa to have an elite quarterback. Cade McNamara was supposed to be that guy and we all see what happens when you don’t surround such a quarterback with elite talent—he is average at best. So, no, I am not saying Iowa should not try to upgrade the quarterback position. What I am saying is if you don’t get playmakers at WR and you don’t find OL who can consistently pass block as well as run block then your million dollar quarterback means very little.

Yes, I think Iowa could win with Sullivan if he had more playmakers at WR. The only real threat he has at receiver right now is Jacob Gill—a kid who had minimal impact at Northwestern of all places.

So, yes, if Iowa can afford to bring in a million dollar quarterback AND 2-3 playmakers at WR, then great, they should do it. If they need to prioritize, though, then their focus should be wide receivers and OL.

Extend drives with their legs, make the makeables, don’t turn it over
Yes, with Iowa’s desire to be balanced and run the football, what you described will suffice for the quarterback position.

The biggest problem with the Iowa offense is they have little to no ability to make chunk plays down the field. If Kaleb Johnson doesn’t bust loose, it’s pretty much dink and dunk all the way. The issue with that is the same issue many offenses have faced against Iowa’s defense: one untimely penalty, one bad play, or anything that puts your offense behind the chains is pretty much a drive killer. In other words, you have to be nearly perfect to sustain a long drive and put points on the board.

Having a mobile quarterback capable of picking up 10 or 15 yards when everything is covered downfield allows your offense to stay on the field and keep picking up first downs. Having a Petras or McNamara back there accomplishes very little on third downs outside of coverage sacks, 3-yard dump passes 5-10 yards short of the line to gain, or interceptions.

And Stetson Bennett was a walk on at Georgia, so they had no clue what they would end up getting in him. Any team in the country could have had him had they seen any talent in him out of high school and offered back then. We fly off the handle if we offer 3 star QBs. Sometimes you gotta get lucky. He was a rare walk on diamond QB stacked with 4 and 5 star support.

I agree. Recruiting in general is a crapshoot.

Iowa doesn’t need a million dollar quarterback to be successful. They need playmakers at wide receiver who will make a $250,000 quarterback look like a million bucks. Sullivan could be that quarterback. Get some speed and playmaking ability at wide receiver, and the passing game will be serviceable enough.

Iowa’s biggest need on offense is OL. They need to spend there. Wide receivers should be priority #2.

Iowa’s secondary is terrible. They need to bring in much better talent there. And for the love of god, does Ferentz have some unwritten rule that one safety position needs to be saved for a walk-on Iowa kid? Jesus.

We are losing a lot at linebacker. That will also have to be addressed via the portal.

Agreed. Would add an edge and probably not worry about safety.

Appreciate Lester's candidness on this topic. Him saying "every position will be looked at" right off the bat is encouraging to hear. It's his offense now, and as time goes on, he'll have more and more of his own fingerprints on it. Right now, we're still suffering from the aftermath of Brian, and will likely continue to suffer from it until the end of next year.

We just need to give time for Tim to cook. The question is, how much money are they willing to let him work with in the portal?

Three turnovers is three turnovers. I get it. In reality, however, the stripped ball he was holding on with two hands and the guy just pulled it out and the one interception was a forced throw while getting sacked that he should have just eaten. I don’t think it was as bad as the stats show, IMO.

I think the funny thing is that after I write that and reflect, it shows how poor our qb performance has been for the last 6 years.
And layer on that we’ve played some teams with QBs who are turnover machines, or at least prone, and have been beaten by a couple of them. Sullivan’s turnovers pointed directly to lack of pass protection and run blocking.

Linebacker room is loaded. Harrell and Sharar have waited their turn for 4 years. 3 talented Iowa guys just finishing up their TR FR seasons. QB, OL, WR and CB are the biggest needs.

I hope you’re right about the LBs. The “next man in” philosophy has not worked well with the secondary this year.

IMO Iowa needs to add 1-2 proven commodities at linebacker.

Of course, because so many teams with better records than us have QBs that are going to start in the NFL. 🙄
Talent level of those above us > Iowa talent at QB. We hired two dudes at QB that got fired from their original teams.

Honestly, Hunter Dekkers looks like a solid get if he is eligible. 26TDs/7INTs, 66% completion rate, 3053 yards passing, 8.9 ypa, 305 ypg, 6 yards rushing, on 32 attempts.

We’ve seen the comments… just a reminder: the Swarm and its supporters are why we’ve been able to bring in transfers like Nick Jackson, Jacob Gill, Lucy Olsen, Seydou Traore, and Drew Thelwell—players who’ve made a huge impact.

Football Signing Day is coming, and the transfer portal opens soon. If you want to keep attracting top-tier talent, now’s the time to help us out!

Lol. Only one of those players have made a huge impact thus far.

I see you don't pay attention. Also, money was provided to existing athletes to help them make the decision to stay another year. You are one that wants it all but you want it for free.
So of the players listed in that tweet, who has made a huge impact other than Jackson?

Yes, i know we have used money to bring players back, but that is not what the tweet is talking about.

Have you not been watching women's basketball or Iowa wrestling or Iowa men's basketball?
Yes, i have
No wrestlers were listed in the tweet. Also, wrestling nil doesnt come from the Swarm.

Second, the tweet specifically mentioned 5 athletes that have made HUGE contributions. What huge contributions has Gill made? (I do think he jad been our best wr so far which isnt saying much)
What huge contributions have the two mens bb made thus far?
And what huge contribution has the female bb made thus far?

There really should be an auction system. Bring them all in get them up on the block and start the bidding.
Seriously, the whole system is becoming vile.
