With the transfer portal in effect, the Hawkeye roster has seen a revolving door of quarterbacks. Some guys left for greener pastures (or better QB coaching) while others arrived in Iowa City for an opportunity to play. It will be interesting to watch the season play out to see which QB who spent time at Iowa will have the best statistical year. In other words, who will end up with the most passing yards / highest passer rating?

1. Cade McNamara: the guy looked AWFUL at last week's open practice, completing about 33% of his 24 passes for just 20 yards. He's the incumbent starter, and with Ferentz, that means he's going to get a LOT of playing time unless he gets hurt. Given that he's thrown for 3,700 yards in his college career with a 61% completion percentage, and is raking in major NIL money to be at Iowa, Cade is the odds on favorite to have the best year.

2. Spencer Petras: Petras may be the most mocked QB in Hawkeye history. Entering his 6th year of college football, Petras transferred to Utah State and won the starting QB role. Utah State is below average team (they went 6-7 last year), but they play against below average competition (i.e. Wyoming, Fresno State, etc.). Petras has 5,200 career passing yards and completes 57% of his passes. With new/better coaching at the QB position, will Petras have the best year?

3. Deacon Hill: Hill single handedly made Iowa football a national laughing stock and may have had a permanent impact on the Ferentz legacy. The guy should have never been playing D1 football, but was thrust into the starting lineup on a Top 25 team. Hill has 1,150 career passing yards but completed just 48% of his passes. Hill is a dark horse favorite to put up the best numbers because he was relegated to transferring to mighty Utah Tech, which finished a whopping 2-9 last year against the likes of Abeline Christian and North Alabama. Assuming he wins the starting QB role, it is possible that Hill eats up (pun) the lesser competition and puts up the best numbers.

4. Joey Labas: Many feel like Labas got a raw deal playing under an ultra stubborn Ferentz regime that refused to pull a starting QB no matter how poorly he performed. Joey realized that if there was nothing he could do to be given a chance to play ahead of the nation's worst QB, he had to take his talents to Central Michigan. Not only did Labas win the starting position, but he raised eyebrows with his play. Wouldn't it be ironic if the guy who was buried on the depth chart behind some of the worst QBs in Iowa history turns out to be the best QB to come out of Iowa since Beathard?

5. Brendan Sullivan: Sullivan might be the best QB on Iowa's current roster. Does that mean he will see a single snap this year? Afraid not. But if Cade gets hurt, which is likely, does Sullivan have what it takes to have the best season of any Hawk? Yep! Sullivan has 1,300 passing yards in the Big 10 with a 69% completion percentage. More importantly, he's the only QB on the list who can outrun a 3rd grade girl.

6. Other: Believe it or not, there are several other Hawkeye QBs out there fighting for playing time. Alex Padilla is at SMU. Carson May is at Wyoming. Deuce Hogan is at New Mexico State. Marco Lainez was tutored by Petras' QB coach, Rassioppi and is back at Iowa for another year.

YOU would post something like this.

Im going to go with Petras. Think the step down will help him clear his head some and he will perform better. It seemed like Iowa was just too much for him at times so excited to see what he can do against a lower level. Say what you will about his play, the kid gave a lot to the program and never dodged tough questions.

I feel for Spencer, Utah State is a mess right now. Blake Anderson was fired after a long investigation into some title IX stuff and the interim is a first-year DC…

Wait…..

Are they this year’s Northwestern??

Slaw brings out the haters, but this will be interesting an interesting thread to revisit mid-season.........

Labas smoked a lot of weed, was constantly late and overall disrespectful. But he was by far the most talented QB. Just didn't think he had to follow the program rules, and unfortunately never got to see the field. He will probably tear it up.

All that said Petras has a ton of experience and playing against poor competition. My money is on him having the best stats by the end of the year. None of them are great.

also petras by far had the strongest arm i’ve seen at iowa. made ridiculous throws look effortless. it’s entirely possible that he tears up lesser defenses.

Petras had the cannon for an arm but was too terrified / lacked confidence to ever throw the ball down the field.

Cade, in contrast, has all the confidence in the world, but has the throwing ability of Jake Christiansen.

Lainez has the best wheels of the bunch, but his 2 of 7 passing performance in the bowl game was not worthy of a Big 10 scholarship.

Deacon has the strongest arm of them all...but cannot hit the broad side of a barn.

There has been an embarrassment of riches in the Hawkeye QB room thanks to the great offensive mind of Brian Ferentz and QB whisperer / lead recruiter Budmyer.

I am going with Cade because he is a baller. It is his last chance to show the world what he can do. I do have questions if he will make it through the season a little. Or every single game anyway, but even if not, I think he makes it most of the way, so even if Sully takes over he will not get nearly the amount of reps or games. HOWEVER, should Cade not make it through the season, the longer he holds up, the more time he has given Sully to step in and get the job done.

C.J. Beathard is making $2.25 million to be a backup QB. So, yeah. Beathard.

Well, C.J. is averaging 139 passing yards per season over the past 3 seasons. If he's the QB with the best stats, either Trevor Lawrence would have to have a season ending injury in week 1 or the Hawks offense would have to have one extremely bad year.

Joe Labas gets out of the gate first, with an 18-of-24 for 342 yards and 3 TDs with no INTs performance in Central Michigan's big win.

It's exceedingly disappointing that Joe's single performance in his very first opportunity to step on the field was better than any performance over the past 3 seasons by the guys Brian and Kirk insisted on playing in front of him throughout his Iowa career (i.e. Petras, injured Cade & Hill). Is it the coaching, the personnel decisions or the player...I wonder?

Update after 5 games:

Cade: 686 yards; 64% completion percentage; 3 td / 3 int; 114 rating
Petras: 810 yards; 63% completion percentage; 6 td / 3 int; 145 rating
Hill: 412 yards; 48% completion percentage; 2 td / 1 int; 100 rating
Labas: 1,078 yards; 58% completion percentage; 7 td / 7 int; 124 rating
Sullivan: 14 yards; 100% completion percentage; 1 td / 0 int; 324 rating

Shockingly, the least popular QB in Iowa history, Spencer Petras, is off to the lead for having the best statistical year.

Week 11 update:

Cade: 1,117 yards; 60% completion percentage; 6 TDs & 5 INTs
Petras: 2,033 yards; 65% completion percentage; 15 TDs & 8 INTs
Hill: 412 yards; 48% completion percentage; 2 TDs & 1 INT
Labas: 1,114 yards; 59% completion percentage; 7 TDs & 7 INTs
Sullivan: 343 yards; 69% completion percentage; 5 TDs & 2 INTs

Clearly it's not a very talented group of QBs with Hawkeye pedigree, but it looks like Petras is pulling away with the best stats and Sullivan looks to be moving into second place.

And the season has come to an end. So who correctly predicted which current or former Hawk would have the best statistical season? Let's see how the group finished up. Here's a hint...they all kinda sucked:

Cade: 1,017 yards; 60% completion percentage; 6 TDs & 5 INTs ~ never beat a ranked opponent at Iowa, re-entered the portal
Petras: 2,315 yards; 65% completion percentage; 17 TDs & 11 INTs ~ team finished 4-8, near the bottom of the Mountain West
Hill: 412 yards; 48% completion percentage; 2 TDs & 1 INT ~ team finished 1-11, last place in the United Athletic Conference
Labas: 1,114 yards; 59% completion percentage; 7 TDs & 7 INTs ~ team finished 4-8 in the MAC, re-entered the portal
Sullivan: 343 yards; 69% completion percentage; 5 TDs & 2 INTs ~ won the only 2 games where he played the full game
Hogan: 31 yards; 33% completion percentage; 0 TDs & 2 INTs as the 3rd string QB at New Mexico State

May: No stats at Wyoming/Abeline Christian
Padilla: No stats at SMU
Lainez: No stats at Iowa

By comparison, here's Kyle McCord's stats at Syracuse:

McCord: 4,326 yards; 66% completion percentage; 29 TDs & 12 INTs

Mind blowing just how bad the QB room was at Iowa last year with the Cade, Hill, Labas combo.

Sadly enough, the best Hawkeye QB this year was...the least popular player in recent memory, Spencer Petras himself! A sad, sad state of affairs in the Hawkeye QB room. Thank you Brian Ferentz and QB whisperer Jon Budmeyr. The two of you shall go down in infamy as the worst QB recruiters and coaches in modern day history.

A who’s not who of college QBs…..I think Jake C and D. Hill will go down as the worst ever to play for Iowa. Good kids, but….😎

Why I am ready for Captain Kirk to hit the portal.

C'mon, man. Gotta give Shaggy his recognition:

Jackson Stratton: 219 yards; 60% completion percentage; 1 TDs & 0 INTs - 2-0 as a starter (career 1.000 winning % tied for 1st all-time in all of sports history)

Chuck Long, Mark Vlasic, Chuck Hartlieb, Matt Rodgers, Matt Sherman, Brad Banks, Nathan Chandler, Drew Tate, Ricky Stanzi, C.J. Beathard, Nate Stanley - I just can't imagine what those guys think about what's happened to the QB/passing game situation at Iowa....

While maybe not a great passer, Sullivan was a bright spot. His passing ended up better than I anticipated based on his first game.

I think its insulting to Jake C to even be mentioned in the same sentence at D.Hill.

Hill was the worst QB I have ever seen at the college level.
Gotta agree with this. As bad as Jake C. and Spencer P. were at Iowa, Deacon was in a league of his own. His first start last season against Purdue remains the worst QB performance I have seen by a Hawkeye in Kinnick, and that's saying something. I remember thinking that there had to be literally hundreds of guys in the student body that would do a better job if pulled from the crowd and put behind center. He was amazingly awful. Quite the find from gift from heaven Budmayr....

I don't care if Labas raped KF's dog while high on weed or if Marco trespassed on KF's neighborhood street, there was just absolutely no excuse for playing Deacon, and then daring to sell it to Iowa fans as their best chance to win. Nobody is that stupid.

Agreed that Hill stands alone - it’s a shame he never made that bus trip to Fordham….😉

Deacon had a big arm and clearly was durable… but our pass blocking and WR play were terrible. So what do we do? We double down with THE LEAST MOBILE QB in P4 history. Just a stationary tub-o-lard. There were a few games where, not kidding, we would have been better off taking a knee on 1st - 3rd downs. At least we cap negative yardage and eliminate risk of fumbles or INT’s.

The BTCG and citrus bowl both definitely would’ve been closer games had Hill taking a knee on every 1st through 3rd down snaps, and then let Tory punt the opponent into poor field position. Would have lost by only 2 to 3 TDs instead of 4 to 5.
