The obvious, the field conditions were awful. Lots of players running around on skates out there and it really sucked for a guy like Akrum, who relies heavily on the cut back. Having said that, I thought he fought for every yard tonight. Without question he showed the NFL something, as if he had to. Game thread wanted him out in space but his game out in space was useless on that field.

@rivercityjazzman boy was money. Unforgiving field conditions, 1 step PAT/FGs and never once did it do anything other than straight through. Kid made me lean once all year long. Great job, scholarship well deserved.
To each their own, I thought Mack Brown and the fat guy named Booger were awful. Parker Hess, Noah Font, BC being called Syracuse, and a constant commentary that appeared to contradict what I was seeing on the field far too often. However, you’re playing a bowl game in December in Yankee Stadium, it’s not like you’re getting the A team.

Sam Brincks was your first back up in at DE. I think the field conditions favored a stronger bigger guy than AJ.

We went very heavy run on 1st down and 1st down was not the problem. It was 3rd down for the most part last night.

Iowa played a lot more close to the LOS than normal. Hooker was down at a LB spot most of the night.

Hankins got the start. Also when we went nickel, Ojemudia came in. I don’t know that Manny played.

Hooker with 2 huge TD saving tackles, but I’d hold off on him going to LB. The one TD saving tackle he was completely taken out of the play by a TE when he was up on the LOS.

Josey played solid, but didn’t look to be the same player. I heard today that he had the flu.

I wasn’t discouraged at halftime because I thought their QB made some throws that I didn’t think he could make in the 1st half and I didn’t think he could continue that.

No duh statement, but they completely controlled both LOS’s in the 1st half.

We tried running wide more in the 2nd half and I’m not sure if that was to Keep BC honest or if the field was getting softer, but it didn’t work. I actually decided to keep a stat.

Probably due to ISM being injured but IKM played the position quite a bit last night and Max Cooper was the first WR off the bench.

Anyone that says KF is the most conservative coach in America needs to Watch BC when they get the ball with 3 minutes left down 7. Run Run Pass on 3rd down. Then with under 2 minutes ball at own 40, run again on 1st down.

Nate called 1 audible all night long.

We only blitzed one time all night long.

Truly believe Jackson goes pro and James Daniels stays.

Turnovers and field position thanks a lot to Wadley were the reason we won in my opinion. I thought BC controlled the LOS for the most part.

Great to get off the bowl losing streak. Great spring board to next year.

1st QTR
Opening kickoff, watch that ball die in the air at about the 40 yard line. Kind of funny, but probably not for Miguel.

14:55, Bazata starts the festivities off on the rink. He can’t get any footing.

14:05, pretty sure that pass was meant for the WR behind the TE who tipped it to Jake. Watch Jackson and Hooker on the interception try to reverse field to help block. Jackson finally gets going, Hooker mails it in.

13:15 Render with a whiff, Beyer gets his first target at a Hawkeye.

13:08, Max Cooper 1st WR off the bench, Stanley had Hockensen in the flat but don’t think he would have gotten in. Mack Booger duo say Stanley throws ball too high for Vandy but look in front of Vandy. LB and Safety are right in front of him at around the 5 and 4 yard line.

12:55 Nick Nieman gets completely held on the kick off, also watch the kick returner right before he catches the ball. Nice 1 yard electric slide.

11:00, TE open on the drag route because Josey slips.

6:56 You can here in the background of the booth, someone mentions the Iowa SID. Not sure why I found that significant but whatever.

6:02 AJ makes an appearance.

3:40 Matt Nelson, splits through a double team and then misses the sack.

2:55 QB throws the ball too high for an open WR, but Bazata made that throw high as he gets to his passing arm right as he throws it.

1:07 Bower completely fooled on this play, goes to an open RB on the opposite side of him and as he does the TE goes running right by him. Thought Bo had a tough night.

:10 AJ Dillon TD, watch the replay after the PAT from the endzone view, Gervase grabs hookers jersey and pulls him back. Not sure why.

Kick Return: Amani Jones and Kristian Welch double team a guy, Jones pancakes him and Welch sprints down field to help on the return.

2ND QTR
1st play, Paulsen with a pancake block assisted by James Daniels who slipped and Paulsen pushed the DT right over him. Then Paulsen helps the guy up and I think back to the fall camp when Brian Ferentz yelled at Wirfs to stop being so God Damned nice.

Next play, Render gets destroyed and Paulsen beat as well on the sack. Thought that personal foul for celebrating was a horrible call. How is that different that swinging for a homerun or even pointing 1st down? Horrible.

Next play/14:00, BC jumps offsides right before the snap, no call.

13:20 Fant TD, Nick Easley was open in the middle of the endzone as well.

12:40, at the end of the play, Gervase throws the WR down to the grown. Footing probably played a part but it was kind of cool to see anyway.

10:40 Drake gets absolutely floored by a LB. A lot to do with footing.

9:42 If Hooker don’t get his hands on that ball it falls incomplete. My bigger issue is how the TE got 3 yards behind him to begin with.

9:22 Wirfs completely leaves his area to help TJ block a DE, LB comes through clean for the sack. A lot going on during this play. As announcers said, Nick Easley was running free and I’m not sure why Nate didn’t throw it. Watch BC alignment before the snap, All 11 guys are in view and Nick blows by the last guy. Also, nobody in the flat covering Butler. He would have probably scored had he thrown it to him. Mack said they had the TE deep (it was Vandeberg) and on the replay you can see the safety knock Matt down about 20 yards down field as he runs right into him.

Next play, James Daniels with maybe the best play of the game. Butler goes 16 yards for a 1st down but Daniels takes the MLB and ends his playing night. Plants him into the frozen turf 15 yards down field. That was awesome.

7:00, DT has hands to the face of Welsh, no call. Welsh plants his foot and guy pushes his face and Welsh slides about 2 yards. Replay shows it a little better.

5:02 Great punt by Nate Stanley.

3:58 This was not an Iowa alignment. All 11 guys very close to the LOS and it cost them. Josey with his only missed tackle of the game but it was a big one for 66 yards.

2:20 Outstanding effort by Anthony Nelson, gets blocked, loses his footing and gets up and makes a great stick on Dillon.

1:15 Both our tackles try cut blocks and end up rolling around trying to get a block.

Next play, Paulsen gets completely owned on the sack.

Next play, Nate sandwhich by two guys, Paulsen slid and guy ran right past him, Wirfs just got beat.

:28 We have had our punting woes but anytime the punter hits the long snapper 20 yard down field, that’s not good.

Their FG. Ball snapped with 3 seconds left, how did only 1 second go off the clock on that kick?

3RD QTR
14:50, Paulsen whiffs on a block. This is where he turned the corner. He got much better after this bad play.

13:35 I’m not the guy that dislikes play calls or thinks I know more, but Vandeberg here runs from one sideline to the other and rarely gets 6 inches from past the LOS on 3rd and 12. No chance of cutting up field on that turf even if he gets the ball. The best part of this play was watching Daniels make the DT his bitch. Funny, you should give it a look.

10:40 Drake gets absolutely floored by a LB. A lot to do with footing.

8:10 3rd and 7, Nate’s long throw to Easley, Noah Fant and TJ Hockensen both stayed in to block. A DE had his hands to the face on TJ. Great throw by Nate but he also had Vandy underneath for an easy 1st down.

7:38 Hockensen with a pretty crushing block.

Next play, Welsh with the block to spring Akrum in for the TD.

7:13 After Wadley’s TD, Paulsen is not on the field and they have to wait for him. Not sure what pissed KF off more, the fact that his head wasn’t in the game or the fact that he almost ran him over going onto the field.

Kickoff, announcers I don’t think ever said why we were kicking off from the 50. I don’t remember a flag on the PAT or the TD by Wadley I loved the kick by Miguel though, high and made them call a fair catch at the 50. ESPN play by play says a Personal foul was called on BC. I don’t remember it and can’t find it.

7:07, Parker with almost a pick that would have been 6.

6:03 Punt, Amani Jones pancakes a guy right at the LOS.

4:49 Both Mack and Booger say Nate has to pull the trigger and throw the TE the ball. Never mind the safety that was right on Fant’s back hip, Weiting was double covered and I’m not sure what TJ was doing on that play. TJ stayed at the LOS and does a half turn and then freezes. Weird. Also, Fant doesn’t get the ball and just runs out of bounds about 7 yards and pretty much quit on the play. Wasn’t like he could stop on a dime though.

3:10 BC runs an illegal pick, their WR blocks Jackson 2 yards down field. Not called.

1:10 They get a good hit on Vandy on the punt and Mack Brown says BC special teams are really bringing it tonight. Ya except for those 150 return yards by Akrum on kickoffs.

1st play after the punt, Drake and the LB with a nasty collision. Drake ends up on his backside but got enough of the LB to take him out of the play.

:25 Butler with a nice blitz pickup, almost a spectacular grab by TJ. Couldn’t have felt good getting slammed to the frozen tundra by that LB.

4TH QTR
13:05 Great tough run by Wadley. The pile was moving but most of that was just Akrum and his determination. He ran so tough all night long.

11:50, Nate makes the right read but misses TJ for the touchdown, , had Wadley in the flat for an easier throw. They go back to the huddle and TJ has a chunk of grass sticking out his helmet.

Next play, Nate has Noah with a step, would have been a tight throw but checks down to IKM who has Iowa’s only drop of the night.

11:28 Kickoff, this is the first time all year I’ve seen Amani Jones on the wrong side of a collision. To his credit, he gets right up and gets to the ball carrier as he’s being tackled.

10:30, They get a long pass play and at first I thought a horrible angle by Gervase but he gets a nice block in the back by the WR. Also, Hankins is being held by a WR twice on the same play. Hooker TD saving tackle #2.

9:30, we appear to get Dillon for a 2 yard loss, ref comes in and spots the ball at the original LOS. I thought they gave offense favorable spots almost all night long on both sides.

8:16 Our only blitz of the night, bower and Jewell came and Neiman spied, good coverage by Gervase and Jackson.

8:09 Kickoff, Wadley and IKM are on opposite sides before the kick and then Wadley moves over at the last minute back to his usual spot. Unless it happened earlier, I thought that hold on Kevin Ward was bullshit.

5:25 This is where I was getting concerned. A penalty on the kickoff, a penalty on 3rd down, we run a draw for no gain and are punting from the 9. Never thought I would be so happy for a 43 yard punt. Great time to have his best punt of the night.

3:09 Mack starts talking about you already have the FG, you have to be smart here, play action pass to Weiting. I watched it and assumed he was a few inches short but didn’t think it was possible to over turn it. Still baffles me how not all games have a direct camera down the endzone line. Anyway, they gave Iowa ball at half yard line I thought that was ridiculous. We were a solid foot close than that even if there was disputable evidence. This play also had a nice wrinkle. Fant was out as he was on a lot of running plays, We shifted Weiting and Hockensen like we had done a lot in the 2nd half while running, then throw to Weiting who was wide open. Loved it.

Next play, Butler and Paulsen with nice pushes at the end for the TD. Would have liked to seen Akrum with a diving TD to tie Tavian there but also cool for Drake to get his 2nd TD of the year.

Kickoff, Nice tackle by Brady Ross, not exactly form but I kind of liked it. Meanwhile Hankins is on the ground holding his jewels.

2:25, Great play by Matt Nelson. He gets hurt on this play but this is an Iowa play. He’s on his knees, no footing and I imagine in pain with that shoulder refused to give an inch to Dillon.

Next play, Jackson with a pick “Mr Interception” they call him. He runs into the BC sidelines and a player in a stocking cap kind of gives him a shoulder.

1:00,. Great blocking on the punt, they were really bringing pressure from the weakside and they never got close.

:54 Vernon Gholston I think in for the first time of the night, AJ almost gets 2 sacks in a row and then on 3rd down Hesse gets the sack. Booger also on the 2nd down here says they had #32 on Jewell and that’s a match up they should have exploited. Watch the play, Jewell is all over him.

As always, much appreciated heater.

Paulson was overmatched most of the game but he had a coupe moments also and the few times I did watch him specifically, it looked like he was really struggling to get a foot planted.

Matt Nelson is going to be a horse in the middle next year.

Max Cooper appears to be odds on favorite to replace MVB but he will have a lot of competition. Spring practice battles at WR should be interesting.

Iowa would sustain so many more drives if Stanley was more willing to run for a 1st down instead of taking a coverage sack. Off-season homework- review film on Ruddock and Stanzi and the art of scrambling.

For some odd reason, Gervase has become somewhat of a whipping boy for some fans. I thought he played another excellent game. Geno might need to wait.

It made perfect sense to feature Wadley and to a lesser extent, Butler. I had a very strong feeling that Toren Young would have racked up big yards in a game like this.

Find a punter.

Some of Epenesa's game was neutralized due to field conditions ... he "spun out" several times when trying to pressure the QB.

Iowa's DL was "stood up" more than you'd usually see ... and part of that likely had to deal with the difficulty of maintaining your balance when your feet have trouble gaining real traction.

A general observation of note ... relating to TE usage. In terms of "positional" action, Iowa utilized 5 different TEs during the game. Interestingly enough, Stanley targeted Hockenson, Wieting, Fant, and Beyer. The only TE who played who didn't get a target was Pekar.

It appeared that Wieting played quite a bit ... I don't know if that was a "shot across the bow" to Fant (to make sure that he keeps up his previously described good work-ethic) ... or simply a reflection of the quality of Wieting's blocking (relative to Fant's blocking).

Of the TEs, Hockenson seemed to get targeted the most. Fant was targeted a bit ... got a lot of looks ... but he was also getting a lot of extra attention from the D. Wieting got targeted just about as much as Fant ... but he wasn't getting the same amount of attention from the D either. Beyer got the look early ... and I didn't see him too much afterwards. I think that Brian was being a little "cute" trying to see what he could do with personnel and how that would get reflected in match-ups.

Holy cracker jacks...that is awesome stuff and a lot of work. Thanks...I did a somewhat similar undertaking a few years ago in the NFL playoffs, charting throws downfield...you know another Iowa message board hot button.

I was shocked by the amount of times NFL teams threw under the sticks on 3rd down and within 5 yards +/- the LOS on a general basis..The reality is most football fans aren't very savvy, they have no clue what they are seeing. I think most of us reasonable types understand the importance of execution, but your play by play breakdown makes it painfully obvious to the critic.

They'll ignore it though...

A number of factors figured into it. Firstly, BC has played in the Pinstripe Bowl before ... so they were more prepared as it relates to footwear. Secondly, a hunk of BC's disruption was attributable to the fact that they had "short" but large (290+ to 300+) DTs/NTs. Such body types have a natural leverage advantage ... and, on top of that, their game tends to be more driven by power. Given the field conditions ... that style of play definitely would give BC some advantages in terms of match-ups.

Also, you have to remember that Iowa was still pretty juggled on the OL ... whenever you have a different OL configuration, that leads to communication and assignment "issues."

Very true. They see what they want to see most of the time and they compare Iowa coaches and players to others that they apparently don't even watch.

13:05 Great tough run by Wadley. The pile was moving but most of that was just Akrum and his determination. He ran so tough all night long.

At the end of the play, Render lets up and some DT cheap shots him and knocks him on his ass. Wirfs gives the guy a little shot and he turns around and starts saying something to Wirfs.

4th QTR
4:20, Hawks go 3 WR, spread the field and then run Wadley up the gut for a long run. TJ Hockensen absolutely crushes a guy in the backfield. Worth a watch.

Also, finally got to really break down the OP's posts .... really good stuff! Thanks a lot for putting in the time and the careful eye to catalog your observations.

Happy holidays too!

Iowa had 2 tackles playing a position they had never played in a college game before. Wirfs had never played LT and Paulsen has always been in at Guard.

Exactly, quite dumbfounding honestly. Just like one of them pointing out how much more exciting PU is than us on offense.

The same PU who averaged 3 points less per game and lost to Rutgers 14-12..... I swear they don't even watch anyone else play.
