Ed Cunningham giving Iowa all kinds of love. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Iowa and Clemson in the playoff. I’ve seen Ohio State, Michigan State and Clemson and Iowa is as good as any of them. Austin Blythe, a 3 year starter and coming soon to an NFL city near you. Iowa now has guys that look like offensive tackles but move like power forwards.Nobody can lay claim to having Iowa in the playoff discussion before the season started. A remarkable job by coach Ferentz and his staff.
He had a great EM50 Urban Assault Vehicle reference but then he explained it.
Wadley’s touchdown run, Tevaun Smith with a great block and also Sean Welsh took his guy almost to the sidelines.
Good to see Koehn kicking the ball into the endzone again
King’s unsportsmanlike play, the whistle was just blowing when he pushed that guy on his ass. King admitted bad play by him but 2 plays later, a OT did the same thing to Nate Meier, no call. Difference was of course Meier didn’t fall on his ass.
Indiana 2nd series, Travis Perry came in for Cole Fisher and he moved to MLB and The Outlaw went to the outside.
4:50 left 1st quarter, that play by the Outlaw should be on every highlight reel we have. He came from the Left Tackle through the LOS all the way to run down a toss sweep right for a loss. That was as good as you can play that.
Iowa’s 3rd drive, we went 4 straight passes for 4 straight 1st downs. I got the feeling that we could have done that all day but KF didn’t want to get into a scoring match and keep the defense fresh.
:50 seconds left 1st quarter, Ed Cunningham pointed it out, but CJ read the CB blitz, audibled and hit Tevaun wide open.
On Daniels 1st TD run, Jordan Walsh with a punishing block on the safety
9:20 mark in 2nd quarter, Indiana runs a WR screen for 20 yards. Ball was thrown past LOS, 3 offensive lineman were down field at the time of catch and took out Fisher to allow a 20 yard gain. Should have been a penalty. Also on that play, would have liked to seen a review because Lomax came out of there with the ball.
Indiana TD, Desmond came in and took on the tackle and Fisher couldn’t get outside. Was wondering if Desmond’s job was contain there. Between him and Cole it was lost. I think maybe Desmond got caught up too far inside.
8:45 2nd quarter, Daniels clogged up inside bounces it outside for about 12 yards and finishes by planting the CB with a stiff arm. Guy made the tackle though.
I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the 2nd holding call on the one drive. The one on Boone Meyers. It was fine until CJ moved inside and the defender went after him, you could see Boone holding his jersey and it pulling away from his body.
6 minute mark 2nd quarter, Nelson was in for Meier and Gair was in for Taylor.
On the 2nd TD run by Howard, Gair missed the final tackle and Desmond was held and he was calling for it to the ref.
3:44 2nd quarter after Indiana 2nd TD, Mccarron with a awesome pancake block on the kick return. Then he got up and went to give the guy an ear full.
Kevin Wilson agreed fully with the call on the helmet to helmet shot on Tevaun. DIdn’t think it was intentional but agreed it should have been called.
The play after CJ hits Jereminic in the butt with the ball, Wadley with a really good move outside to get another 8 yards. Good block by HIlyer but most of that was Wiggle.
1st and goal before CJ went airborne, the ball got batted down, DMX was in the flat all by himself.
CJ TD run, someone already pointed this out but Jereminic Smith with awesome block to make that happen. DMX had a good block on that as well. Really impressed with DMX because a lot of freshman backs would have been upset not getting the ball the play before.
On the last play of the half, Aaron Mends was in rushing the QB.
1st half, CJ didn’t get touched in the pocket, only when he chose to leave it.
There was a lot of talk about the favorable spots given to Indiana. The worst spot of the day in my book was with 10 minutes left in the 3rd. Daniels ran for an easy 1st down, the ref lined up 1/2 yard past the first down and by the time he got to the ball he was a ½ yards behind the LOS. A full yard behind his original mark. The TV thought it was 1st down and Patrick said Iowa going fast here. True but it was to run a QB sneak to get the 1st down. Shouldn’t have been necessary.
Start of the 4th quarter, Nelson in for Hesse. 2nd play he lost contain on Howard for a big gain. He came out immediately and the next 2 plays, Hesse with a very near sack and then a great contain job to tackle Howard.
13 minutes left, Lomax dropped a pick right in his hands. Forced a FG but live it didn’t look like he touched it. Replay showed it went right through him.
12:58, Welsh gets a false start penalty. The next play he completely destroys the DT. Pancake right off the LOS.
After Indiana made it 21-20, Iowa went 6 passes to 1 rush and went right down the field like butter. Great drive with lots of great plays. To me the best play of the game was him running left and throwing across his body, taking a shot and getting it to Vandy on 3rd and 12. Then you have HKC fighting for a 1st down, a gorgeous pass to Vandy to the 3. The only reason we didn’t continue to pass was it was 1st and goal at the 3.
Daniels 2nd TD, they pointed out Plewa’s block, watch Blythes. It was just as impressive. Also, Duzey once again the 3rd TE in goal line situations. Sad to think but I believe that’s his role now. Feel bad for the kid.
Indiana next drive, the TE dropped a pass but it was all alligator arms. Lomax was coming in fast and he saw him.
Desmond King was targeted 3 times in this game. Gave up 1 completion, 1 over throw which was because Desmond was stepping inside and 1 drop. The interception wasn’t even on him, he broke off his guy.
Kittle’s TD I believe was set up the whole game. 19 Completions, 14 were to the middle of the field or to the right of the hash mark. He also had 2 called back for holding that were in the middle of the field. 10 of his 12 incompletions were to the middle or to the right of the hash mark. I realize the patterns go to all sides of the field, but CJ threw 33 passes counting the ones called back for penalties, 79% of his throws went to the middle of the field or to the right of the hash mark. May be me just reading to much into it.
Indiana’s final TD drive, on 4th and 1, the line judge, the same one that kept making bad spots, marks it short at first and by the time he gets to the ball he gives him a 1st down. His knee was down short. Seems pointless to call timeout and challenge it as they rarely reverse the call.
CJ still not sliding. Has to hurt the groin to do that.
Saw the Raider package 5 times. 2 sacks ( not sure if one counted as they gave another favorable spot and marked him back to LOS), 1 TD, 1 pass for 1st down, and one run where Nieman over pursued and it went for a 1st down. On the one for sure sack, Neiman was held and still made the sack.
Saw blitzes other than Raider package, 5 times.Twice Jewell, twice Fisher and once Nieman. No safety blitzes this week. 3 incomplete, 1 1st down pass, 1 run for 2 yards on those 5 plays.
Neiman is really starting to remind me a lot of AJ Edds. Covering WR’s very well.
Our LB group is not the fastest in the world but they when they get there you go down. Missed a few tackles but every team misses a few and today in college football they miss a lot of tackles.
Who called Iowa at 9-0 at this point? How about who called in November there would be just as many teams from the American Athletic conference (Memphis, Houston, Navy, Temple) ranked as the SEC. (Alabama, LSU, Florida, Mississippi State). To begin the season, the B1G had 3 teams ranked (OSU, MSU, and Wisconsin). Now they have 6 (Northwestern, Michigan and Iowa). To begin the season, the SEC had 8 teams ranked with Florida receiving votes. Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas AM. My basic business math skills shows me 50% less SEC teams ranked now, and 100% more B1G teams ranked now. Changing of the guard in college football? Power shift?
