This game was Gatens scout

The game being moved up the few only people who might make it are the grey hairs retired. And they don't get noisy. This felt like a bad practice. All I can hope for is when red ass Connor and Kris come back we use this game as motivation to seal the deal in spite of a hell of a black mark. This has to be numbers wise the worst loss in Hawkeye basketball history. That said, the other 5 probably were under Lick so Fran can take this one and hopefully make something of it.

Nope.

There isn't much excuse for Patrick, Sandfort and Ulis going a combined 10 - 39 and just 3-24 from 3. Patrick is still way too inconsistent of a player. Sandfort shouldn't be playing much if any. He is terrible on D. If his shots aren't falling he isnt a power conference basketball player. Ulis has a very low offensive ceiling. Way too low to be getting the minutes he gets.
Patrick is a great kid but SOFT,,,complete opposite of Conner.

Gatens' wife, Erin, went to Eastern Illinois on volleyball scholly. I'm not sure exactlly how that plays into this, but somehow that is clearly the reason for the loss. ;)

Where is your link every transfer is earning substantial NIL money that Iowa can't seem to afford. Almost every B1G team brings in transfers to their basketball teams. But Iowa can't because of NIL?? ISU somehow has mountains of NIL money to bring 3-4 transfers in a year? How much did Rebraca earn??
You have to admit it seems consistent with IOWA sports to not go hard on the money. Even now that it's approved and the new state of the game. Olde Schoole thinking...

I think it's fair. It's also fair to say that Fran doesn't understand how to coach defense and this team is a bottom tier B1G team without Kris playing. People might talk about his points but he's the best defender among the forwards by a long shot.
Yep.

I don't think Fran doesn't understand defense he just refuses to prioritize it over offense.

He won't make PT decisions that hurt the chances of scoring.

Poor effort on defense gets you benched and an ass chewing at Purdue, MSU, Illinois, Wisconsin, UM ect.

Thats the minimum requirement on those teams, play defense or sit. Period.

That obviously isn't the case at Iowa.

The expectation at Iowa is if you turn the ball over, you sit, commit fouls and you sit.

Play with poor effort on defense at Iowa and you better get back and score.

No amount of scouting can prepare you for a team that all year shot something like 20/25% from three and bad shooting and rebounding to do what they did to iowa in this game.

Iowa continually has struck out recruiting guards for the past decade. We get either guys that can shoot the lights out but can’t create or defend, like Bohannon and Jok. Or guys that can defend, create and are athletic, but can’t shoot, like Gesell and Clemmons. We need a Dean Oliver, Jeff Horner, Andre Woolridge type guard to take iowa to the next level.

What kills me about Fran teams is the aversion to fouling, even strategic fouling. How many damn fast break layups and dunks did they have where we could've fouled at halfcourt? How many weak contests did we have that either did nothing or resulted in an and1? Remember when pmac softly tried to block the guy who double clutch dunked on him? What the hell was that play? Make him earn that shit at the line. Nobody cares if you foul out, Bowen can come in for you. We could've shaved 10 points off their score if we just knew how to foul properly.

This was not on Gatens
It was on Fran. He coached like a turd and was waiting for Christmas. Call a timeout and go off the deep end. The EIllinois coach did and the team played better after that. Fran sat like a dope.

Fran does, and that's all that matters. Fouling is practically a cardinal sin under Fran. Players know that giving up easy baskets won't result in bench time, but picking up a 2nd or 3rd foul definitely will. Players simply don't foul out at Iowa. You can probably count the number of times it's happened in the last few years on one hand. JBo played his entire 6 years without fouling out. I think Patrick has only exceeded 2 fouls 3 times time in his entire career so far. Unheard of for a starting forward.

Fran addressed the amount of easy dunks in the 2nd half. I would optimistically hope this loss turns into a positive regarding rebounds and defense. I say hope a lot!

I agree with you though. It's not like the season just ends after that crappy performance. Got to learn and keep playing.

I'm sure that it was a learning experience and one that won't be repeated. I can't see the coaches being anything but demanding of perfection and intensity. You play like you practice according to a coach i have huge respect for.
