Ferentz Inc., has become an embarrassingly lazy joke and has been for some time. This has been known for years and they've done nothing to fix it and they won't.....
^Exactly this, Brian is just the latest scapegoat.I truly believe that unless we go like 11-1, Brian will depart voluntarily at end of season. I don't believe he wants this to go on for his Dad. Then we can all see again this is really Kirk's offense when the next OC comes in.
Fat cats, you are what your record says you are, you get what you deserve….KF quotes that say what you’ve just said to a T. They live and die by the out execute the opponent mantra while also throwing out the thats football and what’s the upside lines from KF and BarF. They’ve become complacent and allowed to be this way due to no pressure from an idiot AD. I hope Beth Goetz says things will be changing after the season is over.Ferentz Inc., has become an embarrassingly lazy joke and has been for some time. Kirk's offense philosophy is first do no harm, and that is an absolute. Second is score just enough. Third is field position. Try to keep things on the opponent's end of the field as much as possible. Fourth is be balanced even when ramming a RB into a brick wall.^Exactly this, Brian is just the latest scapegoat.
It is safe to say Kirk is conservative, but, I am sure he does not have the attitude that he doesn't want to score. I am sure he would love to score every time but at minimum more than the other guy.Kirk's offense philosophy is first do no harm, and that is an absolute. Second is score just enough. I think that's about it.
Point 1: I feel we often don’t KNOW what our personnel are truly capable of b/c we don’t put them in positions to showcase. Kittle…Charlie Jones..It is safe to say Kirk is conservative, but, I am sure he does not have the attitude that he doesn't want to score. I look at it like this. There are 2 ways to win football games and really anything in sports. Either talent or execution. We do not have a game-changing generational talent, like a Cam Newton, Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson. We do not even have any elite NFL talent like a Saquon Barkley, Jonathan Taylor, Marvin Harrison, etc. And we probably don't have much NFL talent on offense period other than All. So we have to win with execution and the execution as a whole has been terrible the last few years. Missing blocks, running the wrong routes, not being on the same page, are all indications of that.
So why do they not execute at a high level? It always comes down to a lack of practice and repetition. From everything that we know it is like the philosophy on defense and on offense are polar opposites. On defense it is all about fundamentals, not being fancy, doing what they do well over and over again. Execution. On offense it is like the playbook is too big to grasp with relation to the practice time allowed. They can do a lot of different things but they don't do one thing really well.
Personally I don't think that Petras was a bad QB. I have said it many times that I feel really bad for him because he was much better than what he was given. Cade has produced the same way. But, one would have to think that they are shrinking the playbook for Deacon and maybe that is a really good thing. We will see I guess.

I kinda disagree with this take. Iowa played an injured QB with a more limited playbook to adjust to his physical limitations. I think we saw more rollouts, bootlegs and sneaks in 45 minutes with Hill than we saw the previous 4 games under Cade.It is safe to say Kirk is conservative, but, I am sure he does not have the attitude that he doesn't want to score. Why do we not have game changing talent on offense? Yet on defense we're practically sending 3-4 players to the pros every year, most of them 2-3 start guys?It is safe to say Kirk is conservative, but, I am sure he does not have the attitude that he doesn't want to score. I am sure he would love to score every time but at minimum more than the other guy.

I think the shotgun part is obvious. We are not a shotgun exclusive team so we will definitely pass more than run. If the percentage there was 50/50 there would be no element of surprise like there is when you pass 80% of the time and then you run the draw play every now and then. So no problem there.
I did not re-watch the MSU game but I remember watching it live how much I liked Deacon being under center and showing the hand-off so often. It seemed like to me that we ran a lot more play-action with him than we did with Cade, probably combined. I would like to see that percentage while under center to be more 50/50, but, either show the handoff or hand it off every time. That "show" has to atleast for a millisecond freeze the safeties which is exactly what we need. We need to stop making the opposing safeties the stars of the show.
Because offense is hard? Why do we not have game changing talent on offense? Yet on defense we're practically sending 3-4 players to the pros every year, most of them 2-3 start guys?
We love to do the 2nd and 10 off tackle run for 2, leaving us at 3rd and 8. That's pretty much a fact as we're averaging about 3rd and 7.8 yards to go for a first down this year. And what I find funny ( actually not at all) is how some still call that our way of ball control offense. The 2nd and 10 run play which nets you 2 and then puts your line and QB in constant 3rd and eight's, the worst position for an offense to be in we are in almost every single possession. The only guy that could make something consistently work in those situations is Patrick Mahomes, and yet our fans are bashing our o line, QB's and receivers. It's an absolute shitshow.I would like to see a stat on when we have a 1st down incomplete pass, the percentage of plays on 2nd down which are runs up the middle.
Only for us, and other Big Ten West teams like Nebby, Illinois, Northwestern, etc. Might as well be playing w/leather helmets.Because offense is hard?
So you're telling me we're winning games because of an offense that's ranked 130th? So if we were 50 there's a chance we could be 2-3? Please tell me that's not what you're saying. Why do we talk like we are 1-4 ……because we are too dumb to look at the whole picture. We are just burning to complain about something. There are a lot of teams out there that would give their left nut to be in Iowa’s position. We won’t truly understand the value of this sometimes boring system until we are 1-4 and averaging 25+ points a game! I’m sure no one will be complaining then!
I think you're question is rhetorical, but I'll respond anyway. Why do we not have game changing talent on offense? Yet on defense we're practically sending 3-4 players to the pros every year, most of them 2-3 start guys?
Its never ever been this bad. Not even close.^Exactly this, Brian is just the latest scapegoat.
I don't ever blame players. You can acknowledge that they aren't playing well, but in college football players are simply a reflection of the coaching staff who are responsible for getting them on campus and making them successful. We love to do the 2nd and 10 off tackle run for 2, leaving us at 3rd and 8. You have absolutely no idea how good Petras would have been with an even adequate O-line. The only time he had what anyone would consider adequate was when he was a first year starter, and that was statistically his best year. Your take is laughable. This revisionist history being thrown out in some of the threads is laughable.
It is true, and was acknowledged at the time, that the Iowa O line was not good during his time as QB1. Not only not good, but downright awful in 2021 with a further downward spiral into 2022.
But, he was not a good QB. He was not even an average QB. Not just in the B1G. He wasn't even close to an average QB in all of FBS. Being able to throw the ball hard and far hardly makes for a good QB. Despite some musings on other threads, it's highly unlikely he takes another snap for Iowa. That's a good thing. Hopefully he does well in whatever else he moves into after his playing days.
Agree with not "blaming" players. I have no problem with citing issues with player performance. That's not the the same as putting "blame" on a player. Always assume these guys are doing the best they can based on their skill level and how they are coached. The responsibility lies with the coaching staff, again assuming players are giving their best effort.I don't ever blame players. You can acknowledge that they aren't playing well, but in college football players are simply a reflection of the coaching staff who are responsible for getting them on campus and making them successful.
We clearly have completely different thoughts on this. Whatever. You have absolutely no idea how good Petras would have been with an even adequate O-line. The only time he had what anyone would consider adequate was when he was a first year starter, and that was statistically his best year. Your take is laughable.
Types of plays available.......Even Chris Williams on kxno this morning commented that he can guess the type of play Iowa is going to run based on how they line up 80% of the time.
Bottom line is KF made him a nervous wreck. Just like most of his other QBsPoint 1: I feel we often don’t KNOW what our personnel are truly capable of b/c we don’t put them in positions to showcase. Kittle…Charlie Jones..

Why does it have to be one or the other? Asking for improvement is only warranted during a bad win total season? Why do we talk like we are 1-4 ……because we are too dumb to look at the whole picture. As poorly as the o-line performs, I’m thinking it’s pretty close to 50/50. I think ther is a little more success running left, though.I would like to see the percentages of running play go to the right or left
I partially agree with this - the nervous wreck part. However, I think Petras was probably ok to begin with but after having to run for his life and getting smacked many times, he became scared. A QB can't play scared (or nervous).Bottom line is KF made him a nervous wreck. Just like most of his other QBs
For the shotgun percentage, I’m curious how they calculated that. If the quarterback got sacked or picked up a couple yards scrambling, did they count that as a pass play?
