This longshoreman strike will get ugly

So for the last 25 years how do you see corporate profits far outpacing workers wages? Data shows time and time again if you give money to the middle class and poor they spend it all and keep the economy going. This is the first time in US history when 30 year olds have it worse than any other generation before them since the founding of this country.

What's your proposal to fix it.

Hmmm.... what could have possibly happened 25 years ago?

Did I read right that the union wants a 77% raise over 6 years and complete protection from automation? Both of those things seem very far fetched.

I’m all for workers using their voice but those ideas seem pretty far out there.
Automation is the need in the future. The union is being ridiculous and probably deserve a raise but seriously 77%?

So they will get strike pay (assuming they show up to man the picket lines) and hurt John and Jane Q. Citizen, but if the price of everything goes up or doesn't exist at all, they'll be hurting themselves, too.

It's like a kamikaze attack.

If you consume all production, what do you invest to increase production tomorrow and increase living standards for the future?

They're striking while the iron is hot. They know the administration will be reluctant to intervene on the cusp of the election.

First off we have built up quite a bit of inventory in the car market and stores. This guys timeline is way off due to that. Secondly Biden can force this to go through more than just the 90 days. This seems similar to the John Deere negotiations. That union asked for sky high pay that wasn’t sustainable. Deere agreed and is now moving lines to Mexico.

You can’t move port jobs to Mexico. Different leverage in negotiations

Joe has already come out and said he’s not going to get involved and believes that the government has no place in stepping into collective bargaining.
Almost like he’s a liar and a hypocrite.

WASHINGTON, Dec 2 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden signed legislation Friday to block a national U.S. railroad strike that could have devastated the American economy.

"It was tough for me but it was the right thing to do at the moment -- save jobs, to protect millions of working families from harm and disruption and to keep supply chains stable around the holidays," Biden said, adding the deal avoided "an economic catastrophe."

I would argue that's likely just their starting point knowing it's going to get negotiated down.

When these things kick off both sides usually aim for pie in the sky demands that they know they aren't going to get.

They don’t do that. You either are the worst HR person in the world or you’re telling stories. Unions cannot spend dues for political purposes

Unions definitely support candidates. What revenue stream do they have other than member dues that allows them to do that?

Members directly contribute to a political PAC. Those contributions are separate from dues and are clearly labeled political. Unions do endorse but I was referencing your statement about spending dues on politics.

Our well compensated local teachers are asking for a 7% year over year raise. It's ridiculous. Most of the teachers here make$80-110K/9 months. NJ has the highest taxes in the country and I'm in the highest taxed county in NJ where we pay a ton in property taxes already. A 7% ask pisses me off. I'm all for paying teachers well (which we already do), but this is just greed.

I don’t care what they negotiate on salary but their demand to prohibit automation is laughable
agreed

there is no way the port authority would agree to that as it would take any leverage they have away

you want a massive wage increase AND protections that technology won't replace your job?

good luck with that

The USMX said in a statement on Monday it had offered to hike wages by nearly 50%, up from a prior proposal.

This just sounds like greed by the port workers. Some of the articles I have read said the average port worker makes over 80k per year now and many work weekends and overtime to push their salaries to $150k per year. Maybe I don't know enough about the situation but the 77% demand, better benefits and promise of no automation down the line. What am I missing here?

You're not missing anything, its simple greed, nothing more.

Not sure if they timed it or if that is just when the contract ran out.

If I was Biden I would strongly consider using Taft Hardly here. Union will always have plenty of leverage because they can shut down the economy.
I think the administration will wait till the strike starts having a real impact to intervene. We'll see...

I’d be ok with that actually. Hotels only cleaning rooms every other day is stupid. I’m paying for that service.
You will pay more for that service if you want it every day. In the world today it's either raise the price or shrink it. Personally I'm ok with every other day cleaning.

Great idea. Screw the middle class with your little fit. Shut up and go to work.

What he failed to mention was, his longshoreman don't get paid either and have to live in this country as well. Go ahead, cut off your nose to spite your face, it just might backfire. I'm sure we have a few immigrants that would be willing to work. I'm hearing there's a lot being let in.
