This loss on Fran AGAIN!

There was quite a bit of chatter from him that the bench was going to get a lot of run with 3 games in 6 days. Kept his word for Sparty, not so much tonight.

The reality is given the choice, he will always choose the lineup to try and score with opponents rather than to stop them.

The Toussaint lack of minutes would be easier to swallow if I didn’t watch a single second of the Gonzaga/noncon games where Joe showed he could make an impact.

I was willing to give Fran another chance to prove he could win a B1G title after the 15-16 season. We had a formula for a while that year that I thought, if he could rekindle, could push us over the top with a few personnel changes. Unfortunately, it looks like that hope was misguided.

The Hawkeyes had a 10 point lead in the 2nd half.
Yet, they could not hold it without any defense.
The Buckeyes made two 3 pointers in a row and cut
the lead to 4......from that point you saw Iowa had no
answer......and eventually lost by 4 points.

Icing on the cake is Fran saying in retrospect he should have played Joe T and Perkins more. Wow.

This quote is all you need to know about Fran being clueless. The question was around Jobo playing pretty much the entire 2nd half:

McCAFFERY: I thought Bohannon was playing really well and I wanted to leave him out there. I kind of went with my veteran guys in this game.

If giving up at least 20 points in the 2nd half is "playing really well", then yeah he was great. But most people wouldn't agree.

Fran is who he is. He is intent on being the Washington Generals---score a lot of points and entertain, but lose the game.

Worse coached game I’ve ever seen. I used to defend Fran but I’m over him. If he doesn’t fire one of these old ass assistants and bring in a young defensive coach, he needs to be GONE!

Fricking February Fran Fade AGAIN

This. Fran is a good recruiter, mediocre in-game coach.

Holtzman totally out coaches Fran tonight - especially in the second half.

I just re-watched the game again, I’m convicted if Joe T, Tony P, (and even Ahron U) plays a lot more instead of JBo then IA wins.

I’d encourage people to re-watch the game and see how often JBo got ripped to shreds on the defensive end putting the balance of the defensive sequence at a major disadvantage.

I think you guys underestimate Frederick’s impact on the game.

The bottom line Fran isn’t going to change his style. His philosophy is to always play a offensive player over a defensive player. I’m fine with this, it’s very entertaining basketball and we’re going to win more than we lose. That being said, we are really missing CJF. I don’t think we lose these last 3 games with him healthy. I’m disappointed that the regular season championship is out of the question, but I think by March we have depth and are going to be a dangerous team to play.
I won’t be surprised if this team makes a run in the Big and National tournament and that’s what you’ll remember about this team!

i wish a reporter would then ask him if any of his assistant coach suggested getting joe t or Perkins in. If they did suggest it then that’s really bad on Fran. If they didnt suggest it, Fran should be looking for some new assistant coaches.

Yeah, I agree people are underestimating the loss of the best knock down shooter in the conference...

but that doesn't excuse Fran refusing to use his defenders. Especially after how well they played the previous game.

I just hope the last two games have shown Fran something about what will work and won't.

Doggone it Fran beating Ohio state would have looked good just now and it was there for the taking. Learn from it , use the bench you’ve been waiting for for 10 years

Honestly, Ulis is the most obvious choice IMO. Should play alongside JoBo or JoeT and/or Perkins.

1. Pure, pass first point guard
2. Plenty of athleticism, quickness
3. High BBIQ
4. Runs offense well, smooth
5. Plays under control, very few TO's
6. Solid defender
7. Outstanding FT shooter

I don’t care how he uses his bench but for heaven’s sake use it . You need shooters play shooter, you need ball handlers use em , you need defense play the guys who can play defense but not playing the bench a whole half without any guard substitutions is crazy unless you don’t think they can play, then why recruit em

Good point. Haven't understood this since the beginning of the season. He has done nothing but impress when given PT. Fran just can't let go of his union mentality as it relates to who gets the most minutes. "Gotta play my veteran guys" is such bull&%$#. Meanwhile Ohio State can play a 17 year old freshman who joined the team in January.

The fade is much more disappointing this year because of the talent he is wasting on the bench who could help the team now and in the tourney. Along with the temp outside, Iowa's seed is falling rapidly.

Good post lol. I almost typed the same thing in response to another thread. We know that at Iowa coaches talk about accountability, ownership and expectations, but that is only for the players. Neither KF or FM want any legitimate questions asked that imply they made a bad decision. How many more years do we have to read in Fran's post-games about regretting not playing this guy or calling a time out etc.,? And the next time when we are sure Fran learned something from the last 50 times, he does the same bleeping thing.

Excellent "Union" analogy! (and a public sector union at that :))

Why cant Fran just sit everyone down and say something like "We have a lot of talent and a deep bench. The B1G is as tough as it has ever been. We will need everyone to be ready. We will be mixing up the rotations to make preparation for us by our opponents extremely difficult. We must stay together, and are stronger when we go 12 deep."

And great point on the 17 year old, My F'n goodness, the kid just walked onto campus with his h.s. graduation gear on and he is playing on the road against a top ten team.

Because then the “we play too many guys” haters will flood the boards
