This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Both, imo.

Putin thought he had a Trump level moron in charge and that was a huge error on his part.

I think I speak for millions of Mericans in saying I'm sick and fvcking tired of Dem Presidents having to clean up rhe mistakes of Republican Presidents.
Pretty sure Russia invaded Ukraine twice both times under Democrat presidents.
This is Biden attempting to clean up the Obama mess. Nice try.

They could not even equip the first bunch of mobilized troops and are already reduced to using convicts. They have to rebuild their army equipment to pre war levels which will probably take 10 years minimum. And they talking massive expanding. Just complete clowns.
Paper armies.

Why expend blood and treasure to take over Ukraine when you have a stooge in place that will pave the way for you with a weakened foreign policy based on flattery and personal gain?
Yet…Putin didn’t invade while the “stooge” was in office. Weird.

Actually, no gymnastics needed at all.

Anyway, we can agree to disagree and probably shouldn’t clutter up the tread with politics.
Actually, you and the others trying to make this case look like pretzels right now. You'd be better off arguing that who the president of the US was at the time of the Crimea and Ukraine invasions had nothing to do with it.

Trying to argue "smart guy in office, so I'll invade" (x2), "dumb guy in office, we'll stay in Russia" just doesn't work...

Any decision that was made by Putin to invade Ukraine was primarily based on what would increase his power in Russia imo. A brief invasion, overthrow of the Ukrainian government, and taking of the land and resources would have strengthened his position internally.
