This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

KYIV, March 13 (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping could wade deeper than before into Ukraine diplomacy as soon as next week, staging both his first trip to Russia and his first talks with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy since Moscow's invasion.

Several sources familiar with the plans told Reuters Xi could visit Moscow next week, an earlier-than-expected trip in response to a long-standing invitation from President Vladimir Putin. His plans to also hold a video conference with Zelenskiy were reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources, which Reuters was not immediately able to confirm independently.

Remember this weekend when 1,090 KIAs were reported in one day? What that did not include was 1,500 additional "sanitary" losses that same day, which means soldiers injured grievously enough so that they can no longer fight.

Russia’s arms industry is cratering. Exports for this lucrative part of their economy is shrinking rapidly. I suppose because of sanctions, but I also think on the field performance of their weaponry is making buyers rethink who to get their stuff from.

I think it's mainly (right now) because they cannot export anything, because they need it in Ukraine. There's zero production bandwidth for anything, anywhere else.

Russia is just one big organized crime syndicate

Zelensky is right. Didn’t they have a peace guarantee when they gave up the nukes? There is no way in hell that Putin’s word is worth anything and as long as Russia has nukes any peace guarantee would be just as worthless.

Yesterday or Saturday, I posted that Ukraine might be playing rope -a-dope with the Russians. This article suggests that maybe the Russian MoD is playing rope-a-dope with Prigozhin and the Wagner group around Bahkmut.

Those crazy Russians!

Russia Turns to Women's Prisons for Fresh Recruits – Reports

TASS_31753719.jpg

Russia has resorted to recruiting inmates from women's prisons to serve in the Russian military in a bid to make up for its growing losses in Ukraine, according to both Ukrainian officials and an independent Russian prisons watchdog.

“Last week, a train with sleeping cars for the transfer of prisoners was spotted moving towards the Donetsk region. One of the cars [had] female convicts [in it],” Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said in an update published on Monday.

Olga Romanova, the co-founder of prisoners’ rights organization Russia Behind Bars, confirmed the ministry's claims to independent news outlet iStories, noting that Russia had likely been using female prisoners to aid its invasion efforts since at least the end of last year.

“They were taken from penal colonies in southern Russia. I don’t know the exact ones, but they worked in Kushchevka [in the southern Krasnodar region],” Romanova told iStories.

As many as 100 female prisoners are believed to have been transferred to fight in Ukraine so far, according to the human rights defender, though it remains unclear if the recruitment was carried out on a voluntary basis or whether the inmates had been press-ganged into the Russian military.

In February, Ukrainian military officials said that Russia had recruited as many as 50 female prisoners from a penal colony in the Russia-occupied city of Snizhne in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. The recruits were sent for “training” in Russia before being returned to Ukraine to fight, they said.
