This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

Xi and Zelensky talk on the phone. Not sure what to make of it, but Xi seems to be pushing for negotiations.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping appealed for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in a phone call Wednesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warning “there is no winner in a nuclear war,” state media said, in a long-anticipated conversation after Beijing said it wanted to act as peace mediator. Xi's government will send a “special representative” to Ukraine for talks about a possible “political settlement,” said a government statement reported by state TV.

Xi is probably promising investment and $$$ to sweeten the pot. The thing about Xi and a autocratic regime like China is he can make hard promises.

Western aid and support is fungible and susceptible to political change. We aren't good at long haul commitments in the west...

Ukraine just has to look at the promises that were made and weren't kept when they gave up their nukes.

I don't like the sound of that all. It seems like this these efforts could go sideways and Ukraine could lose the moral high ground.
I have to disagree-Russia invaded Ukraine. Whatever Ukraine can do to defeat Russia is fair game IMO but others will agree with you.
What I suspected might happen before reading that, is that Ukraine would drive deep enough into Russia in an attempt to cut off supplies and perhaps encircle Russian formations. Though the more we learn, the less strength Ukraine seems to be able to muster to try something like that.

Even if Russia deserved it (which they do), Ukraine has to allocate scarce resources. I would love to see them drive down to the Azov and terminate the land bridge to Crimea, and then chisel away east and west until Mariupol is taken back, and Crimea is taken back.

This. I don't like the optics, and the GQP / morons like. Northern will use this as an excuse to cut funding, and it is simply a waste of resources for a minimal battlefield gain.

In my mind there is a simple parallel. If you believe the allies were morally justified entering Germany in WW2 then this should be a non issue.

However, the autocratic tendencies of countries like Hungary will muddy the waters. So unfortunately it is a legitimate consideration.

This is why I think they will go straight for Crimea. It has more justification and results in the same regime change pressure…I just worry about feasibility and casualties as that is potentially a very well defended battlefield.

Kind of Ukraine-Russia related. The U.S. is still flying the F-117 Nighthawk in a testing role to calculate our ability to target and evade stealth aircraft.

Also have seen rumors that the U.S. during the Trump administration acquired a Russian S-400 from Turkey in 2018 and using the F-117 to test against it. I’ve seen a few photos of the F-117 in a metallic coating.

This makes me feel old and nostalgic. During Desert Storm we had the daily Air Tasking Order so we knew who, where and when we would be attacking Iraqi forces and infrastructure. Seeing where the 117’s were tasked and then seeing how effective stealth was really made us appreciate the people who developed and our pilots skill at employing those awesome jets.
