This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

MOSCOW, Dec 27 (Reuters) - A move by Japan to provide Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine will have "grave consequences" for Russia-Japan ties, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

Relations between Moscow and Tokyo, already difficult, have deteriorated sharply since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in Feb. 2022. Japan has joined its Western allies in imposing sweeping economic sanctions on Russia.
Russia is going to the bubble screen of its playbook, saber rattling and threats. They are getting their asses handed to them by Patriot missiles, Storm Shadows, and HIMARs. I keep hoping that the US will provide ATACMS, and I hope that the first time Russia realizes Ukraine has employed F-16s is when a long range weapons system spectacularly blows up something.

Meanwhile, India is watching all of this, taking stock of their own military hardware in view of Russian failures, and Russia's military export complex (such as it was) is bleeding market share to the U.S. and France.

There's no comprehensive plan for how the war is to be won that we know of. There's been no real accountability for the aid provided that we know of. Biden is currently using US Defense money because Congress won't provide dedicated funding.

“It’s apparent how the Ukrainians won. Ukrainian scouts sneaked out at night to lay mines along the likely approaches between Russian positions and Stepove. Ukrainian drones targeted the attackers, even striking one BTR fighting vehicle laden with ammunition, triggering a massive explosion.

Any Russian vehicles that got past the mines and drones met the American-made M-2 Bradley fighting vehicles belonging to the 47th Brigade.

“Bradleys of the 47th Mech were scything the Russians to the left and right like there was no tomorrow,” Hill wrote. Against the M-2’s powerful 25-millimeter autocannons, the Russian fighting vehicles “stood not much chance.”

And the mines could have been laid by artillery fire as well.

Russia fires 122 missiles and 36 drones in what Ukraine calls the biggest aerial barrage of the war

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched 122 missiles and dozens of drones against Ukrainian targets, officials said Friday, killing at least 22 civilians across the country in what an air force official said was the biggest aerial barrage of the war.

The Ukrainian air force intercepted most of the ballistic and cruise missiles and the Shahed-type drones overnight, said Ukraine’s military chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk wrote on his official Telegram channel that it was “the most massive aerial attack” since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Fascinating and so very predictable from a madman and dictator how Putler throws temper tantrums every time a ship is sunk or the big bridge is hit. And at what cost, take out 10 million dollars of civilian infrastructure and civilians with 200 million dollars of missiles you have been trying to save and build back up your supply?

Russia's ability to keep producing/buying missiles/drones at this rate is a little concerning.

Plenty of holes in the sanctions apparently.

I can’t seem to find an up to date version of the sanctions map.

Has this picture changed from summer of ‘22?
Even NAFTA member Mexico doesn’t have sanctions on Russian trade. They’ve made it clear they only follow UN sanctions, and with Russia on the Security Council…

Russia, as a renegade terrorist nation run by the world’s #1 terrorist, needs to be removed from any and all positions of authority in any world organization posthaste. Their security council seat has been forfeit by their own actions.

Why won't Biden be reasonable and compromise on the border? Then the Ukrainians could defend themselves better against a psychotic madman who has targeted civilian facilities in every war he's been in.

If he wants it to go through he has to cut a deal. It's a win/win so I'm not sure that the holdup is. Other than progressives getting their panties in a bunch.

As the war rages, the parties rage in St. Petersburg and Moscow. However, there is blowback. Our old friend Maria Butina is mentioned in this story about public outrage over a nearly naked bash. There is public outrage, the values of Russia are being tested, there might have been gays out in public...
Not that this story couldn't have been written in previous years under Putin, but there is a tinge here of blaming the party boys for social decay while the war effort stumbles.

It's weird how the country that rose up and overthrew the Czar (pretty authoritative regime) can't seem to rise up against this a-hole.

I wonder if we can compare Russia to Nazi Germany where some of the military did try to get rid of Hitler. We know Putin is afraid of assassination and there have been rumors of attempts on his life. But he has thousands of security people who probably are snuffing out any hint of resistance, even within the military. It has to be hard for the Generals and Admirals to watch their forces being destroyed and weakened for decades into the future.

I’m sure many of them wouldn’t shed a tear if Putin caught the dead.
