This might be a little tougher than Putin thought...

This is what I’ve been saying all week. This is about mineral rights. It looks like Zelenskyy is miscalculating how to deal with Trump’s temperament. He’s like Luke skywalker flying through the channels and weak spot of the Death Star. There is hopefully a path to victory, but he can’t be hitting the walls.
Our military aid should come at no cost to Ukraine. A free, democratic Ukraine is very important for the US and the EU and the world.

You cant put a price tag on it and **** Head Trump only worries about getting some kind of repayment from Ukraine.

Trump is a pig of the highest order. If Ukraine would have lost by now it would cost the US way more

I agree completely. I am just taking in realities this week.

I was in this camp for a long time and still understand it, but now I recognize that no amount of military aide is going to win this war for Ukraine, and while we shouldn't ask for direct compensation, we should still have a piece of the outcome as Ukraine's largest source of funding and equipment fueling the war machine.

I always assumed there would be a permanent US and/or EU Military base in Ukraine when this was all said and done, but was unaware of valuable minerals. Honestly an economic partnership whereby there is real American interest in Ukraine is the best security Ukraine could hope for. We may not really care if Ukraine exists, but we sure will care about our access to valuable minerals, and you can bet we'd protect it. Apparently Zyllensky brought this idea up months ago, and I think it would be worth pursuing.

Ending the violence and simply walking away invites it to begin again years later, as it did before in 2014-2022.

I am not with you on the first paragraph but mostly with you on the second. I don’t think we should have piece of the outcome. However, the reality is that it looks like we will. Assuming it is on a percentage basis, Ukraine should be honest with us as to where all of those minerals are so that the pie is as big as possible, so Russia will have to de-occupy lands where those exist. And if the land is as valuable as being described, Trump will protect it like the mob boss he wants to be.

Sigh. So this is what it’s going to come to. Allocation of mineral rights. I am pretty fatalistic at this point. Trump is trying to gut our own federal government and is imposing tariffs that will make things more expensive here. He is using Russian propaganda talking points. If he’s doing those things, it’s over for Ukraine in terms of US $$$ unless they are willing to sign over massive amounts of mineral rights. Otherwise, Europe must step in and provide everything we were providing. Otherwise, ukraine should cut the best deal they can now. I hate it, and McCain and Reagan are rolling over in their graves. I also hate what trump is doing here, but there is nothing we can do about it. The rules have changed and players must make the best decisions they can within the new rules.

As I'd posted months ago: he's turning it into a mercenary force that he will set loose on Congress if they try to defy/remove him from office.

If Congress doesn't figure this out fairly soon, it'll be past the point of no return for them. Most Republicans are already too afraid to stand up to him, fearing for their own lives and their families.
