thoughts from the game

we did, it was called the Fieldhouse
While I liked the atmosphere in the Fieldhouse, it was a literal pain in the neck if you ended up in one of the seats where your vision was impaired by the steel pillars. I'll always associate the Fieldhouse with the privilege of watching Ronnie Lester work his magic.

You are flat out wrong when you say plus/minus is meaningless for one game.

If it were meaningless for one game, then why has the official Iowa basketball Twitter account and MANY national beat writers all utilized plus/minus during ONE GAME over the last several years? Well, the answer is obvious; plus/minus for one game is meaningful information.

So, you keep being wrong and I will once again provide examples that go back 5 years showing that plus/minus is meaningful information for one game.

From 2017:

This is from Iowa Basketball. But what do they know?

From 2020:

Brendan is a writer for the Athletic.

From 2021:

Mike has been an Iowa beat writer for a long time.

From 2019:

Chris obviously covers the Clowns

From 2019:

Adam is a Buckeyes beat writer for the Columbus Dispatch.

Every time I read one of these over the top obsessive responses by Fran I can't help but picture a guy sitting at home alone frantically searching for posts to reference while meticulously bolding pieces of text, repeatedly reviewing and editing then thinking to himself, "That'll show them," as he smashes the post reply button.

This was my second trip to Williams Arena and I think I was more impressed than the first time. Convincing the family to make the 10 hour round trip drive is a lot easier with the Mall right there. The work/school schedule worked out and the weather cooperated even better by the snow storm hitting Friday and no later. It was meant to be.

The hotel we like is near the blue line and the MOA, so it’s a cheap, easy ride to the arena. One kid and I went to the game as the rest of the family went to the Mall.

We got there a bit early and walked around the concourse dipping into the gym at different viewpoints. The ushers were all very friendly, always offering to take pictures for you with the players in the background. You walk through a tunnel and see Tony Perkins and Ulis about 10’ from you in the layup line. Pretty neat.

Our seats weren’t all that great, but we were a few sections over from Gary Dolphin. Didn’t see Bobby, assuming he wasn’t there, but we walked right to Dolph after the game as he was doing a post game wrap up. We sat next to several Iowa fans and there were a lot of Iowa fans spread out around the arena. It seemed to be a lot more Iowa fans than two years ago. It also seems like MN has a similar problem as Iowa. Very few students and lots of premium seats going unused.

As I said, I was impressed what they have accomplished with a 90+ year old arena. The suites at the top and the club level behind section 101 is pretty cool. The building has an odd smell to it, but I couldn’t tell if it was the taco stand or the years of built up stench. Probably a mixture of both. Either way, I am jealous that their fans get to enjoy that place for every home game. It did get rockin at the end and very loud. They have earplugs on the concourse for fans. Just glad the Hawks took them out of almost completely.

Probably the coolest thing was after the game. While we were looking for a restroom, I look up and see Kris and Kenyon on the concourse near the Iowa locker room. Kris was talking and taking pictures with an elderly man in a wheelchair. It looked like a lot players families were there waiting on the guys. As we were walking away, out came Rebraca.

It was a great time and a fun weekend. Well worth it. We all saw the game, so I won’t comment much about that. Even up 23, I didn’t think Iowa played all that well. Slow start, missed a ton of easy baskets. I’m just thankful as much as we bitch about our coaching and rotations that we don’t have Minnesota’s coaching decisions. Imagine this board if Iowa didn’t go to a zone defense earlier or if Trey Thompson played for Iowa and didn’t see a minute in the first half. If either of those happened, we could be looking at a very different outcome.

I have shown you are wrong. Everyone can see it.

And now you are just embarrassing yourself.
No, you have failed to produce any valid arguments that support your position or even make an intelligent argument.

Showing examples of other people sighting irrelevant data does not make your use of data relevant.

Plus minus only measures the score when a player is in the game. It doesn't mean anything specific in regards to that player. It can be totally coincidental.

You can sight it, it just doesn't mean anything specific.

Then why is it part of the box score? Oh, that's right, you guys are the experts when it comes to this stat. My bad, so we should just take your word for it.

I notice that you don't bring up Jbo's 3 steals, his 12 points and being perfect from the FT line; hmmm, I wonder why.

And all of you should contact the stats people and demand that they remove the plus/minus stat because you, anonymous experts on a message board, say so!!!
Cmon Fran, lets at least insert some context here. Jbo shot the ball like CRAP, AGAIN. 2 for 8 from three following his 1 for 7 in the last game from him is not going to get it done, period, and this has become a fairly regular thing against decent teams. He only ended up with 12 points because we made sure the ball was in his hands the last several times so he could be the foul shooter. Now cudos to him for at least dropping those , because damn near nobody else could hit a free throw. He also seemed to give some effort on the defense, at least what he's able to do. Pmac throws up some of the god awfullest looking shots at the rim, and makes almost none of them. Nice to see him hit something from outside though. His length provides some plus on defense, but he's a really sub par rebounder for a guy who 6'9" and fairly athletic. Makes me think he just doesn't have a rebounders desire. On the plus side I thought Rebraca played his ass off, and hope he can build off that performance....

Not a complaint but obvious observation. Patrick needs to shoot more shots when he is in balance.
He is a floater and a pull up jump shot would be helpful. I coached basketball for 30 years and see things.
This, plus he needs to go at his defender and draw contact. When he fades away from the bucket, he misses every time and does not get fouled. When he goes to the bucket on his shot, he invariably either scores, gets fouled, or both. He must be aggressive.

Again, Iowa basketball and national beat writers use plus/minus on a per game basis all the time. They wouldn't do so if it were not meaningful. You, on the other hand, falsely claim that the stat is meaningless.

I have shown that your claim is flat out wrong over and over again.

And now you FALSELY claim that I never posted anything that supported my correct position.

Do you ever post anything truthful?

And everyone can see plain as day that it is you who has failed to make an intelligent argument.

And speaking of your ignorance on this topic, what exactly have you shown that supports your incorrect position? The only thing you have shown is a bunch of nonsense showing that you have lost the argument and that you are wrong.

Congrats.

you lost the argument in a convincing fashion.

and more useless nonsense is all you are left with.

you are pathetic.
You've embarrassed yourself thoroughly and you know it.

It wasn't even an argument I just told you facts.

You're truly nuts and about as bright as a 2x4.

I have proven that you are wrong and all you are left with is more nonsense.

You have embarrassed yourself completely on this topic and everyone knows it.

And you are lying again; you presented ZERO facts; you only presented your false opinions.

Again, are you ever truthful? At least you are consistent.

You are truly nuts and as bright as a sheet of useless plywood.

I'll go ahead and restate all the facts that have been presented to you throughout this thread.

Fact. The only thing a players plus/minus measures is the teams score differential when said player is on the court.

Fact. The score differential is not specifically or directly related to any one player.

Fact. A players plus minus can fluctuate significantly due to factors they have nothing to do with.

Its simple to understand. We're done here.

There's no sense arguing with the intellectual guru that is Fran, bow down and admit defeat.

The amount of effort some people put into proving people wrong on an anonymous message board baffles me. Is there a point system I'm unaware of? Prizes for being right? My guess is Fran has 3-5 alternate accounts that he uses to argue with himself. Let's get back to basketball boys.

Takes no effort really.

Im watching ball and doing this during commercials.

You say that Fran did not react well in the final ten minutes. What would you have liked to see him do differently? Fran took the second team out after three minutes of play in the second half after they gave up eight points. Fran then took out Joe and had Jordan run the point when Minnesota went to the zone so he could get another shooter on the floor (Kris). There are plenty of threads complaining about the above moves, but Fran did at least do something to keep his team in the game and pull out the win.
Remember, I have been a Fran supporter. I said he did not respond well down the stretch, not that he did nothing. To break a zone, do you take out your best ball handlers and then not move the ball? That is how you usually break a zone. I don't know how many times Keegan even touched the ball in the last 10 minutes, but it wasn't many. The defensive end was just as pathetic down the stretch. The Goofers were down to a few consistent scoring threats, yet they were scoring almost at will. Battle is a good player, but someone needed to be told to stay with him and forget the rest...

It was a win, even a road win, and it's time to figure out how to beat Rutgers on their court. I know some don't think Connor can play, but this is a game where I sure hope he can play.

This is absolutely an useless stat on a per game basis. It doesn't take into consideration who was on the floor with the player, nor does it take into account who was on the floor for the opponent. Look at it like this. Austin Ash comes into a game with 15 seconds left and is playing against the third stringers from the other team. He scores a three pointer and the game ends. He has a plus/minus of+3. Whoop-di-doo.
Now suppose you have a player who scores 30 points and plays 40 minutes. His team loses by 25. His plus minus is -25. In the same game a player comes into the game to shoot a free throw because the player who was fouled was hurt. He makes the free throw and then leaves the game. His plus minus is plus +1.

There is no value in this stat on a per game basis, and if you play for a crappy team and play a lot, this stat probably has no value on a per season basis either.

Any thoughts on those facts?

The facts: You were wrong when you said that plus/minus for a game was useless. Iowa basketball and national beat writers use plus/minus for one game all the time, so it's clearly not useless. Why can't you comprehend this? What is useless are your posts.

So you weren't actually interested in facts.

I gave you specific facts that were very easy to understand and you replied with anecdotal examples of people that don't know any better than you.

Read the kenpom article and stop embarrassing yourself.

Just because something is used doesn't mean it has an actual value. Talk to an efficiency expert and they will tell you that often many things that we do or use are actually counterproductive thus creating a negative value.

I'm sorry I re-opened this can of worms. I thought the Kenpom article would put an end to it. Boy am i a dope. 🤦‍♂️
Lol cmon man.

You thought information was going to sink in now?

The only thing that ends it is Franny getting the last word.

He'd keep bringing up Chris Williams tweets until next summer if that's what it takes.

You kinda have to admire his stamina in these interactions. No matter how many times he gets tagged he bounces right back. Same for his ability to tune out any outside influences that might detract from his position. He's really good at keeping his focus on just one guy and one idea. Kinda reminds me of a Hawk that's chasing down a bird. That bird can fly through a flock of other birds and do you think that Hawk gets distracted by those other birds? Nope. He chases that thing down till he gets it or it drops from exhaustion. Impressive! Fran is a true Hawk!
