Time & the AP misled on Trump's immigration policies. We need strong media, not fumbles like this

Newsflash: One of Obama's guys ADMITTED there were abuses during that administration, and they worked to minimize them.

With the utter overload of people incarcerated in short-order by the current administration, would you expect the number of abuses to go "up", or to go "down"?

Be honest here.

Again, you try to go off topic. Again, read that AP story. Immigrant children were locked up in detention facilities UNDER THE OBAMA administration. They were abused in these detention facilities UNDER THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION. Yet you want to deflect and focus all of the blame on Trump? And NEWSFLASH: The abuse to children the AP uncovered occurred under Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's (a Democrat), watch.

Why do you only include the Trump administration when you discuss "utter overload of people incarcerated?" Talk about trying to mislead! NEWSFLASH: there was an "utter overload of people incarcerated" during the Obama era as well.

Once again you go off topic. Why can't you stay on topic? The topic is the media and how it misleads.and how it leads to #fakenew claims.

Again, you CONVENIENTLY IGNORE the AP portion of the orig post (because you are incapable of staying on topic) and what happened to kids under the Obama administration.

Again, sticking to the orig post, are you outraged that Time lied in its original reporting? Are you outraged by the AP misleading the public? Are you outraged that kids suffered from malicious and sadistic applications of force, where they ended up with broken bones, all during Obama's and a Democrat Governor's watch?

Are you? Or are you a hypocrite? Which is it? I am guessing you are a hypocrite and that you can't possibly place blame on a Democrat and I am guessing you will be trying to go off topic again.

You want to talk lawsuits??? Well, here is the AP story linked in the orig post, which you fail to address:

Virginia’s governor ordered state officials Thursday to investigate abuse claims by children at an immigration detention facility who said they were beaten while handcuffed and locked up for long periods in solitary confinement, left nude and shivering in concrete cells.

Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, announced the probe in a tweet hours after The Associated Press reported the allegations. They were included in a federal civil rights lawsuit with a half-dozen sworn statements from Latino youths held for months or years at the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center near Staunton, Virginia. The AP report also cited an adult who saw bruises and broken bones the children said were caused by guards.

Multiple detainees as young as 14 said guards stripped them of their clothes and strapped them to chairs with bags placed over their heads. The incidents described in the lawsuit occurred from 2015 to 2018, during both the Obama and Trump administrations.

“Whenever they used to restrain me and put me in the chair, they would handcuff me,” said a Honduran immigrant who was sent to the facility when he was 15 years old. “They also put a bag over your head.”

In addition to the children’s first-hand, translated accounts in court filings, a former child-development specialist who worked inside the facility told the AP she saw kids there with bruises and broken bones they blamed on guards. She spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to publicly discuss the children’s cases.

The lawsuit said Latino children were frequently punished by being restrained for hours in chairs, with handcuffs and cloth shackles on their legs. Often, the lawsuit alleged, the children were beaten by staff while bound.

As a result of such “malicious and sadistic applications of force,” the immigrant youths have “sustained significant injuries, both physical and psychological,” the lawsuit said.

After being subjected to such treatment, the 17-year-old Mexican youth said he tried to kill himself in August, only to be punished with further isolation. On other occasions, he said, he cut his wrists with a piece of glass.

The lawsuit alleges other immigrant youths held at Shenandoah have also engaged in cutting and other self-harming behaviors, including ingesting shampoo and attempting to choke themselves.

A hearing in the case is set for July 3 before a federal judge in the Western District of Virginia.
Not sure why you waste your breath responding.

It's fun to watch him decompensate in this thread and others, all along claiming he is an "independent"...

and AGAIN you still don't address the orig post where it points out the atrocities that happened to children under the Obama administration's watch.

instead, you deflect

Why is that?

Are you, too, intellectually incapable? That's the only explanation i have.

Still having fun, Joe?

No....his admin ADMITTED problems. They didn't work to EXPLOIT those problems, to effectively blackmail immigrants into signing papers agreeing to leave in exchange for their children.

Again....do you honestly think the problems have gotten BETTER, or gotten WORSE under an administration that is no longer targeting criminal behaviors, and is capturing as many people as possible, to reward privatized jails which donated loads of cash to them - the SAME jails which the Obama admin was planning to close DUE TO THE ABUSES you are referring to?

How brain-dead are you here?

Again you deflect and make MANY claims that are unsubstantiated. You continue to go off topic and don't address the issues from the orig post. You think all the problems started during the Trump administration, which is clearly not the case.

You have proven you don't have the intellect to have a reasonable discussion on here. You are so far left you can't see straight.

Still having fun, Joe?

Again you deflect

....do you REMEMBER that time Obama stated he was cutting off funds for the private incarceration facilities which CREATED these abuses?

What happened after that?

  • Lobbyists for those institutions paid millions to the GOP
  • GOP won the WH
  • GOP rewarded them with HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS in more contracts
  • GOP started rounding up people willy-nilly, FAR faster than existing systems could process them, to meet "minimum quotas" for those private contracts, costing taxpayers HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS in fees

That's what this is all about. A money-grab, using separated children as a pretext. And here you are DEFENDING it.

Again you deflect and make MANY claims that are unsubstantiated.

Those claims are absolutely "substantiated", if you bother to look them up.

Someone who was truly an "independent" would do that. But that's not really you, is it?

more deflection, just what i expected.

Where's the deflection? You simply seem to want to ignore facts.

Can you link a federal judge ruling against the Obama, Bush or Clinton administration on family separations?

We'll wait...

This thread was never about family separations. .It was about the media getting it wrong. It was about the media misleading. It was about the fact that atrocities also occurred under the Obama administration, even though the AP's original reporting made it look like it was all under the Trump administration.

The thread was also about how when the media does not get the story right, it feeds the #FAKENEWS narrative and lathers up Trump's base. Does that make me sound Republican to you, Joe?

Does it???

So why can't you stay on topic?

Are you intellectually incapable?

Please answer, because that's the only explanation I have.

Still having fun, Joe?

Why would any sane person want to join either one of these asshat parties?

Because if you don't, you get left with what you get left with.

You combine the worst court decision in US History, Citizen's United, with the gerrymandering and you have a system that is totally broken. They can''t even pass a budget, just a series of continuing resolutions.

My hope is for actual policy debate in Congress, with open minded people hoping to improve the country. But, I'm afraid that ship has left port.

Citizen's United put the country up for sale to the highest bidder. Get rid of that, get rid of Gerrymandering, and you may get what you wish.

Fox News misleads evey hour of every day, but I guess you're good with them doing that.

When I watch them I understand their mission and expect their deliberate deception.

Who said I am ok with ANY news outlet misleading anyone? Why would you say that I am "good with them doing that?"

Why are you making stuff up? Ironically, you say Fox News makes stuff up but it is YOU, when making stuff up, who sound just like Fox News!

Republicans and Democrats are not currently interested in the truth, they just want to be outraged.

It’s like we have an ever shifting group of parties that just want to act like two year olds who just had their suckers taken away.

To see so many “adults” acting like children running around telling other people how to think is both amusing and frightening.

I can’t wait for these people just start killing each other off.

I agreed with everything you had to say until the last sentence.

So let me ask the OP something; Would he support something like the Concord Coalition's Budget plan?

Well, you keep ignoring that it was Republicans who kept these policies in place as Obama tried to stop them. It's awesome how you seem to think you are "winning" this debate by accusing somebody of not staying on topic yet your entire premise is based on trying to blame someone who actually tried to stop the exact thing you are claiming (despite this being pointed out multiple times).

Only a Trump voter can be this willingly complicit.

Your constant selective nature of the facts you choose to accept and your failure to understand metaphors and symbolism make you sound exactly like a modern day Republican.

No, Republicans remain in power by making their base outraged. Democrats are outraged at the blatant double standards Republicans exist on and the willingly complicit nature of the Republican base.

Another way to put it, you don't get to shit in a Democrats house and then claim the Democrat is trying to be "outraged" when they get upset about it.

you make about as much sense as Joe.

Good Lord.

No wonder our country is in such a damn mess.

Do you support a centrist solution to the budget problems like the one posed by the Concord Coalition?
maybe start a thread on that.

i believe in balanced budgets.

In Minnesota they raised taxes on the wealthy and we ended up with a surplus and a thriving economy. Raising taxes and having a fair tax plan works. Does that sound Republican to you? Or does it sound like finding common ground and making decisions that make sense?

I am sure @Joes Place will still accuse me of being Republican.

Yes; I've acknowledged this. And Obama was shutting down the private facilities pinned with the violations.

Instead of shutting them down, the new administration has ramped them up.

Again....do you think those institutions "magically" fixed what Obama was going to shut them down for, when Trump and Sessions gave them sweetheart contracts, minimum occupancy deals, and started rounding up people to maximize their profits?

Some of the violations you refer to DID occur during Obama. And his administration was answering for it. Then, that accountability simply disappeared. And instead of focusing on those institutions, you're bitching about Time Magazine.

This is precisely what I have advocated. I've been a registered Republican in Colorado for >10 years. I've just informed my state Senator if he doesn't get his shit together, that I'm re-registering as an independent. He's heard from me 5x this month.

You do understand the problems caused by Citizen's United and gerrymandering? Its tough to have good middle ground when you have a system rigged against it.

gerrymandering has been an issue for a long time and of course our elected officials don't seem to want to fix that, either, because guess what? it benefits them and it keeps them in office.

Well we have a president that acts like a two year old and thinks that he is only president for the ultra rich.

Most democrats are corporate democrats and like Joe Crowley don't deserve popular support.

However, only an ass would want them to kill one another.

Neither. Although I do think there are people of goodwill on both sides who realize having government for sale is not a good thing. Its one reason I voted Green last time and probably will again.
