TJ Otzelberger new ISU coach

I have been very transparent about following both schools. Yes, I did my undergrad and grad work at ISU. However, I have a daughter who is an athlete (Iowa Club Women's Soccer Team) graduating from Iowa this year, so even own an article of clothing with the tiger hawk on it I wear to her games, so am on the Iowa Campus regularly, or travelling with the team when they play other schools. I also have a daughter that is a sophomore at ISU. Thus, I post on this message board fairly regularly as well as on an ISU board.

My uncle, now deceased, was a 50 year Iowa alum, so I used to be his designated driver to Iowa games, so attended a lot of games in Kinnick over the years. For those who have followed Iowa Women's Basketball over the years, he was known as "Big Arn". I think my posts on this site have been geared towards conversation rather than homerism.
Neat. I grew up 20 mins from Lames and have multiple extended family members went there (immediate fam knew better) so I follow them but yesterday is the second time in 20 years I actually went over to CF and I didn't consider posting as I've never posted on a rival's board.

I guess there's following and then there's firing off 10 posts on a weekday afternoon on Iowa's board about ISU's new coach. Your tone seems quite defensive even though you are taking the offense coming here, not what I'd expect from a fan pumped about their new coach.

I wasn't saying TJ will be a dud as no one knows but a slow start with a gutted program in the bten when transfers weren't nearly as available isnt nearly the same as a slow start in mtn west with a team showing momentum in the transfer portal era.....that's all. It was TJ's choice to clean house

-10 posts? I think this is my 3rd today, but my posts aren't just after an ISU event. I have several hundred posts, including during game threads, on this board. ISU coach just happened to be the conversation of the day. I don't make it a practice of coming here to gloat after an ISU win, or to pile on after an Iowa loss. Generally try not to be a troll.

-Point taken on comparing the situations. My post which you responded to was a response to Franistheman's post who did say:

Franisdaman said:
$10M is a helluva lot to simply get rid of one dud & replace him with another dud

-If I seemed overly defensive, then I apologize as it wasn't my intent. I was simply explaining why I was here as your comment "Not sure why you are on an Iowa board the day isu announces a hire (actually I am)" seemed misinformed so I explained. I also understand there were other Cyclones fans more or less flaming in the same thread, on an Iowa board, so understand the stereotyping and clustering - just felt it didn't apply to me but others will judge that.

- I try not to use inflammatory language (like your use of the term "Lames" above), but also accept it as I am on an Iowa board. There is similar inflammatory language on the ISU boards. I generally try to steer clear of it, but we are all human.

Why are you waiting? This isn't exactly a secret. The buyout if they had hired TJ six years ago is the same as it would have been if they'd hired LC.

Well your Rail friend didn’t seem to grasp that, that’s why I was replying to him and not you.

Rail - I don’t know you. My problem is not with you or ISU. Simply with the few people on CF that harassed the living hell out of my ex and kids. Twins and his couple guys doing it. They know who I am, where I live and work but go after a female and kids to the point of disconnecting a home phone at at place I haven’t lived in 7 years. Which is not surprising as they go after kids with cancer and autism. I hope you are not that type of human. Argue or troll all you want. Seriously come after me but leave females (who don’t care) and minors out and come after me or are they that big of pussies.

Sorry to hear that, HKfan23. No, I would never do that. Unfortunately, both fan bases have a few jerk posters.

I do get riled up with Hawk fans, and I know they're not all bad. But, ask any Wisconsin fan, any ISU fan, any Minny fan, and lot of Big 10 school fans which fan base is the worse, and it's almost always "Iowa". Sorry, just the way it is...doesn't sound like you're like that.

Our daughter attended U of Minn. A few years back, we went to Iowa-Minn football game. We had a couple Iowa fans behind us that were just complete jerks. I stayed quiet all game...Iowa was winning, and Minny came back and won at the end. I turned around, and they were headed up the aisle. Boy, I enjoyed watching them walk in silence.

In 2019, at Ames, took our son to the Iowa/ISU game. Had one Iowa fan pass out on me and fall over during a storm delay. I naively thought it was a medical issue, and was trying to help him. My son said, "dad, he's plastered". His wife just rolled her eyes as if to say, "yep, he's plowed again". I thought to myself, "you must be so proud".

When ISU fumbled the last punt and sealed the victory for Iowa, an Iowa fan turned around, raised both middle fingers at the ISU fans. Cool. He was a complete Tavern Hawk.

Like it or not, Iowa fans have a reputation...and it' s not great. But, I do hear your story, and I'm sorry you went through that.

I come here once every couple weeks, probably shouldn't, but it's a bit entertaining. Have a good night.

The popular gossip from Clone fans seems to be the buyout might have been funded by Dennis Albaugh, a wealthy donor from Ankeny. If you've ever travelled down I-35 from Ames to DM, his home is the mansion sitting next to that private golf course on the west side of the Interstate.

Estimated net worth of $3.5B. With a "B". So Pollard has plenty of $$$ for all his horrible HC hires. At some point, tho... Albaugh might get tired of Pollard and tell him to GTFO.

Where in the hell do you get this stuff? You heard from one person, and you run with it? Damn, you could work for the New York Times.

Whatever. Never was proven.

Peterson ran with the story with no proof. Your AD and President did too. I had a few back and forth's via email with your President, and his responses were child-like. Peterson, not child-like, but never could offer any proof.

Again, nobody could ever provide any proof...and that was with your band marching/storming through the wrong exit playing your fight song after an emotionally charged five hour game.

Your band director is a complete jerk. (Yes, I'm saying that without proof, but that's equivalent to the accusations against our fans.) And, I'm saying in tongue-in-cheek.

Sorry you had a rough run with some idiot fans. That sucks. Come around. Makes things “interesting.” And no I don’t think you would ever do that crap. Leave that to Twins and his unemployed minions to harass females and kids and laugh about it on the answering machine with f bombs my underage kids heard in the middle of the night.

isu’s AD and fans have proven over and over and over and over again they are douches .

So for those who would argue the excuse that we need to ignore his record at UNLV because the roster he inherited I ask the question does that mean we should ignore the success at SDSU for their roster he inherited which included 3,000 pt scorer Mike Daum who was there for all 3 seasons he coached there?

It reminds me of football when Husker fans cry about Frost and all Riley's guys and that's why they suck (which be a lot more difficult to do next season in year 4) but then again they ignore he had a lot of success in his 2 years at UCF with upperclassman he inherited from the last coach who played a lot especially when they were younger guys when UCF was down.

I don’t think Albaugh gives a shit about ISU.

son in law is a big Clone fan.

The 1st 6 I listed were there before Fred.

Again was TJ the reason they went there or was it the head coach? Also funny Niang, Morris rivals doesn't credit him as the lead recruiter. Plus some guys like Houge, Mike Taylor, Weiler-Babb, Gilstrap are we suppose to be impressed by these role players? Do you think Garza came here because of the lead recruiter that was Sherm Dillard or was it because of Fran the head coach?

I will take Niang's word over rivals. Also Otz was the secondary recruiter for Morris. Cornell Mann was the primary.

Oh so being he secondary recruiter gives him credit too, gotcha. So again do you think these players picked ISU mainly because of the lead, or as in Morris' case his secondary recruiter, or that playing for the HC was the primary reason they came? Not saying primary recruiter doesn't matter and they play a big part but the end of the day saying a player comes to a school to play b-ball because of the main assistant recruiting him over the head coach is just a farce. I know you guys want to pump up your new hire any way you can especially with this recruiting angle but it's laughable to give him the majority of the credit for all these guys coming to ISU.

I can't imagine IOWA hiring a new coach in our marquee sport and me spending the day hanging out on another team's website.

There are some constants in life. One is, the stunning lack of self-awareness that clone fans seem to have. Unbelievable. Predictable...but still unbelievable.

After a day of painting ceilings in my home, I finally have a chance to sit down, and see ISU hired TJ.
My thoughts are positive + optimistic. He has had success at the most important aspect of college coaching - recruiting. There are certainly other necessary elements, but getting talent is the #1 priority. This is apparently his strong suit, so I am happy.

From what I have read, TJ got a lot of praise from Matt Thomas, Naz Long, Georges Niang, and Monte Morris. That is good enough for me. I am excited for what lies ahead.
A final thought. As I perused this thread (mostly for comic relief), I realized something. ISU could've hired a top 5 type coach (lets say Chris Beard), and a majority of the posts (lead by HerkyFan) would've been negative.

Anyway. Who the hell did you expect Pollard to hire? Keep in mind who Iowa hired 11 years ago. It wasn't a top flight coach - and you guys want to run him off anytime he loses 3 in a row. Schools like ISU hire mid- major guys like TJ. Sometimes these mid major unknown coaches turn into big time coaches like Chris Beard.

The most successful coach ISU has had in the last 20 years never coached a game before. Another successful coach came from Utah State. Another from New Orleans. Hell, the highest profile coach came from UNI, and he ended up having a disappointing tenure in Ames.

My point is this, hiring a coach is a bit of a crap shoot. TJ could end up being a great hire. He might be awful. The reality will be somewhere in between. I'm not totally unrealistic and think ISU will be a NCAA-caliber team next year. This will be a multi-year rebuild, but I'm excited for what lies ahead. That is what Pollard needed to do - invigorate the fan base.

Time will tell.

Jesus ****ing Christ did I day they picked ISU for TJ only? No! I answered the question of who he brought to Iowa State. Is that so hard to understand.

And yet you quoted guys he wasn't listed as lead guy or quoted him as "secondary recruiter." But then again weren't you the same poster who said ISU had better players 2-12 over Iowa...

Wes Johnson, Mike Taylor, Brackins, Garrett, Gilstrap, Ejim, Niang, Thomas, Nader, Naz, Burton, Monte, Hogue, Babb, Weiler-Babb, christopherson
Hey Hayes_30, haven't heard from u in awhile. How did that 2-22 treat u? Remember when u thought clones had a better 2-12 lineup. Not only does Iowa have a better team and program, ISU was considered the worst power 6 team in the nation this year. I can't believe Pollard just fired a coach with losing record with another coach with a losing record. This just gets better with time. Enjoy watching Iowa as a 2 seed in the tourney.

its incredibly stunning how Iowa fans are simply pointing out the obvious in that the Clowns spent $10 MILLION to get rid of one dud to only replace that dud with another dud.

If you are going to throw $10 million away, LOGICALLY, you would go for a home run hire. And TJ is obviously not a home run hire.

And sure enough, Clown fans are here, using NO LOGIC in this discussion.

Little brother syndrome is alive and well, folks.

AND me and my friends have been to no less than 25 plus stadiums watching the Hawks play thru the years and without a shadow of a doubt Ames is the worst, hands down, no second place even.
You honestly rolled out a drunk fan story--makes me believe you have never been to an event in Ames--you really got us with the fan fingers--like I have never seen that in Ames.
and a lot of big 10 fans bases wow again---you really need to keep your self over generalizations to yourself and your friends because I would would think your kid was talking to me otherwise.
Look up Oz the cheerleader and then come back to me with your Jack Trice BS and how wonderful your fans are. Of cours, every fan base I have spoke with always complements Ames as the absolute best fan experience for a visitor in the world, not just the tri state area,,,,,

yeah he’s riding tavern hawk till the end like it’s the ultimate burn. Shocked he hasn’t brought out “hok” fans yet. color me shocked he was at a college football game against a rival and someone flipped the bird at opposing fans, oh the humanity. I’m sure that never happens at the Michigan-osu or bama-auburn games.... Also I can’t believe there was a drunk fan passed out at college game especially during a weather delay. I’m sure it never happens anywhere else where tailgating hours before a game happens...

but it’s funny how he says minny fans say Iowa are the worst. Maybe it’s because we bring more fans to their home games and yeah no bias from a fan base when they chant “who hates Iowa, we hate Iowa” when they aren’t even playing Iowa.
