Late last night, UCLA put the final nail in the Big Ten coffin. The TKO of the Big Ten conference was surprising to all of us. What happened ? I really don't think the Big Ten was overrated, but the results say differently. Really hard viewing the last couple weeks. šŸ˜Žā¤ļøšŸ€

UCLA's disruptive defense definitely threw Alabama and Michigan for a loop. Yeah, the Tide got smoked in OT (their D gave up 20+ points in FIVE MINUTES) but remember, they only scored 64 apiece in regulation.

That said, as good as their D is, it's not good enough to totally disrupt Gonzaga. They can only slow down the machine, but while they can keep the Zags from hitting 80 points, their offense is nowhere near good enough to keep pace. I'm thinking a 75-55 type of game.

After watching much of the tournament, my conclusion is the Big Ten needs better athletes and more of them. Some of these teams are full of freaking athletes. Michigan has quite a few but even they fall short. And, defense still does matter. These teams left are impressive on defense. A team of great athletes who play defense is tough to beat.

This has been a year with the most upsets in the history of the tournament. A first four team in the final four? How fun is that. I also don't remember so many blowouts in the sweet sixteen and elite eight in previous years.

Strange year for sure and while the big ten probably wasn't 3 teams in the top ten good they are a great conference. Enough with the not athletic enough garbage

Iowa would have beaten Michigan last night the way they shot the ball

Agree. And if the rest of the league needs better athletes then that was especially true for Iowa's group of starters this past season. The starters at the 1 and 4 spots being among the least athletic at their positions compared to the rest of upper tier conference players in the entire country.

What happened is that the B1G's second-rate talent and athleticism reared its ugly head yet again. Once again, it's a tough league chock-full of good teams, but no truly elite ones.

This. The Big Ten usually competes well in the non-conference, but when it comes to tournament time the superior athletes in the other conferences take over. Not to say the Big Ten doesn't have great athletes as well, but I think on average it is slightly less than the other major conferences. I chalk up good non-conference performances to the Big Ten usually having better coaches and team continuity than the other conferences. Also it seems like they have more veterans and less one/two and done players. Teams with those veteran players and coaches can take advantage of more talented teams earlier in the season.

I also have no data to back any of this up.

Hey look it's the guy who said Gonzaga sucks & they'd be a .500 team in the B1G.

Yeah, I know this is a CSB, but for the first time in a very, very long time, I really don't care about watching the Final Four.

Would be fun if ucla won it all. Otherwise who cares...and that sums up the problem with teams like gonzaga or houston becoming powers. They are fun as a cinderella story. Not so much as a blue blood story

They would not be what they are in the BIG at all. Not this year or any year.

They would be exactly who they are, with possibly a few losses, but not many. They are so fun to watch offensively. So much movement off the ball. What a treat to watch,,,unlike most B1G teams.

Lol you keep bringing the comedy. Ok it's clear you haven't watched one Gonzaga game this year, they are very fun to watch.

So many people on this site are not fans of the sport basketball. They are fans of the Hawks, & watch no other bball.

Same story in football, except for Ohio St.

Michigan With Livers is a lot better. That said, Dickinson and Wagner played like crap, lot worse than when they beat down Iowa. UCLA defense gets a lot of credit.
Defense helps for sure but there are always uncontested shots that don't go in, and Michigan proved if you don't make them you don't advance.

Wagner can go over the top of a lot of folks, and he in particular was off, and Dickinson was scared to commit another offensive foul and threw him off his game IMO.

Strange to think that UCLA was down double-digits to MSU at the half and is now in the Final Four. What were their chances?! It's been a weird year. Would loved to have had the healthy Hawkeyes that beat UNC in December to play Oregon in March let alone anyone else during the regular season.

Serious question. Why do you feel that way? Gonzaga has been really good for a number of years, they are certainly no longer considered a Cinderella. Houston is at this time but boy were they fun to watch in the Phi Slamma Jamma days, brings back some great memories of that team.

How can one not enjoy watching Gonzaga on offense?

Also, are you content with Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson winning all the time in football? How is that different from you UCLA statement (although I enjoyed seeing them beat Michigan to make it to the Final Four).

Gotta say that Gonzaga has really impressed me. Overall, an average group of athletes, but their bigs have ballet like footwork surrounded by quick guards with really good ball skills. They remind me of old school fundamentals with their screens, cuts, boxing out, and overall D. Except for a few guards, none of the bigs still haven't found the weight room. They are legit and very well coached ! šŸ˜Žā¤ļøšŸ€

They are always in unison & spread the floor like an NBA team. They're not that deep but don't need to be. Cook is their worst player who gets minutes but for how bad he is on offense, he makes up for it on D.

It's the most fun college team to watch in years.

The B1G is getting a lot of crap, and deservedly so, but why is the Big 12 getting a pass by the media. All we heard from their fans was that they were better than the B1G because they had a higher % of their teams in the tournament. Well, how many do they have left? And why is that never mentioned by the talking heads?

Although I did not watch a great deal of pre-tournament discussion by the media, what I did watch never mentioned the Big 12. Fans,,,yes, they talked a lot, but did not hear much from the media. I certainly could have missed it, but if the media didn't push the Big 12 prior too they probably were not going to give them much attention during the tournament.

Average? 9 top 100 high school recruits on the roster.

What I can recall hearing was mostly about Baylor. okie state and texas getting some talk occasionally.
But nothing of the magnitude that took place all season long about not only the top of the league, but how good even the middling teams were.
The B1G was just not nearly as good as portrayed. Definitely not at the top. And while the middle of the league was competent, they hardly come out looking stellar either. The takeaway is that in the non-con portion of the season there simply was not enough information to evaluate the league against the rest of the power level conference teams.

To me itā€™s like watching a train wreck. Want to turn away but just canā€™t. Have to see if the Zags can run the table now. That doesnā€™t happen every day . On any level thatā€™s an impressive feat

Agreed. Now the Zags need to finish it. A title game vs Baylor could be interesting.

Gonzagaā€™s the best team in the country, no doubt. They also look like the freshest team in the country too, probably due to their regular season schedule.

There is also two 1 seeds and a 2 seed in the final four.

We had an entire season of making fun of Iowaā€™s defense. That said, Iowa would not have lost a game to a team that scored 51 points. Nobody... not UCLA, the Lakers, or ā€˜39 Germany... would have held the Hawkeyes to 49 points.
