Transfer Candidates

No way Fran can keep 14 players happy next year(13 on scholarship + Connor). Either red -shirts or transfers or any combination.

Wagner was a solid contributor, just not as a shooter. I would be surprised if he transfers, and I expect that he will continue to get 10-15 min/game. As was pointed out, Hawks are not as good, if Wagner and/or Baer are not playing. He can function as a pick and roll guy, but he really does need to work on his free throw shooting.

Jess Settles was on KXNO yesterday afternoon in Des Moines and said he has heard that no players will be transferring this year. The guys that are there love being part of the team and love Fran and not about playing time for them. Want to be part of the team. Fran doesn't run guys off either so if they want to stay and play they have to work for it but can be part of the team either way.
Meanwhile in Ames, another transfer out and now they have 4 scholarships available and will be filled via grad transfers or JUCO. Prohm won't keep you around if you don't play. Just a different philosophy than Fran.

Grand transfer isn't against the rules. Might as well do it if you can. They can basically re-load with w/3-4 guys that want to transfer and play right away. The experience those guys brings in alone is good enough to get minutes playing. You find some good players mixed in w/what they have coming back ISU could be right back in the NCAA.

Cook, Pemsl, Baer, Moss and JBo are the best 5 returning players and there's a big drop off after them. Kriener has shown enough to get into that group and I believe he will. I'm fine with any or all of Ellingson, Williams, Dailey and Wagner transferring. All but Ellingson didn't redshirt which should make it an easier choice and transition for the other 3. Makes most sense a transfer comes from those 3, Uhl's staying put and Ellingson likely also imo. When do coaches usually have that end of year talk with each player?

yes he is but how many big shots did he hit over the last 6 or 7 games ? he is not athletic enough to get his own shot . he has to be wide open . if garza and nunge can shoot his minutes will be very very limited . his defense is just so so and he gets very few rebounds , we have better athletes who can be on the floor .

I think Kriener is more likely to start next year than to transfer.
If Ryan beats out Luka Garza for playing time I will be very surprised. Garza is a highly recruited nationally ranked Center and 250lb rebounding machine - exactly what Iowa was missing this year. Other than ability to run the floor, I can't name one area where Garza is not better than Kriener (IMhumbleO).

I posted a couple of months ago that I didn't see anyone leaving. Apparently Jess agrees. The most likely candidate would be Uhl if he graduates this year, but with the trip to Germany looming I don't see that happening.

I do expect to see some people leave after next season, but at the moment we will play a pat hand.

Still what 6-7 weeks left in the spring semester? A lot can happen in that time. I'd be very surprised if one didn't

Agree. This is something where I really wish Fran would take advantage of. Don't know many coaches who let "end of the bench" guys who won't contribute much in their 4 years stick around over the opportunity to get a 1 year instant impact guy.

A lot of coaches "Crean" a guy like this to bring in someone more valuable to the team. But Fran won't do that. He values everyone the same and are like his own kids. If they choose to leave, he encourages them to succeed. Otherwise, he commits to them regardless of output they will give during their time. He is definitely not like Prohm or Hoiberg are - encourage to leave and replace with better talent.

I think cook could blossom into a damn good SF he has a shot just lost confidence in using it

Since he's sticking around, hopefully Fran can have an impact on him like he had on Sapp going into his senior year.

ryno99, you have no idea what you are talking about. Fran meets with each player at the end of each year and tells them what he sees as their role if they chose to stay the next season. This is his way of "running off a player" and he has seen some leave. Just look at those who have left the program and know Fran has had a conversation about how they do or don't fit in his plans. Then it's up to the player to decide what to do. Most want to play and when they are told they won't or their minutes are going to decrease they move on.
Don't think for a minute Fran doesn't encourage certain players to move on. I know for a fact he has done so straight from a players mouth to my ears. Maybe this year he doesn't want anyone to leave.

Yeah but he leaves up to the players to decide. He told Sapp either put in the time or leave. Sapp put in his time and worked hard and had a good senior year. Other players demanded to play more and Fran told them what they had to do and you can see the players that want to "work/wait" and the ones who want to look for greener pastures.

Crean and other coaches basically tell them they don't have a scholly anymore and that's that.

Thank you. This is what I was inferring.

Yeah, I see it as a positive that Fran is honest with his players and encourages them to make a decision best for them. Anthony Clemmons is a great example of how honesty can work wonders for a guy's career.
