Transfer into Iowa

Of all the latest transfer news, I wouldn't consider any of them "top guys." Lately we've heard about Campbell and Racer to tOSU, Beazley to Mich, and Keener possibly transferring somewhere (PSU mentioned as a possibility). Those are the only 4 recent transfers that I can think of and there's only 1 8th place finish between them.

EDIT...and Rodriguez out of tOSU would be a 5th, but he hasn't accomplished anything more than the others mentioned

Colby Covington? Wait, he went to Oregon State with Zalesky. My memory is a bit foggy on that

I do think Iowa gets fewer than many. I know they missed out on a few because they had strict transfer rules

I am not sure why we don't see more Grad Transfers like ISU Basketball just seems to get every year now. There has to be some AA Round of 12 type somewhere with a year of eligibility left that Iowa can plug and play immediately. Some one along the lines like a McKenna, Bryce Meredith type who wants to go to Dental, Law, Business grad program and wants a legit chance at a team title.

Because you guys don't need to. Plus, if a guy is R12 or so, unless there is a coaching change, he wouldn't want to go anywhere. Why would he?

Well for Grad School for one. Maybe their school doesn't offer it.

Other reasons,

1. New coaches to improve, maybe they soaked up as much as they can in that environment. Maybe they just don't like the coach they committed to after a few years.
2. To wrestle in front of 15k
3. For a legit chance at a team championship.
4. Better workout partners.
5. To be on TV way more. Family can watch easier.

I hope you are not an Iowa coach being so quick to dismiss all avenues. This seems to be a main cog in what ISU basketball has been doing and Hoiberg was a bit ahead of the curve on this. One and done' ers on the back end can be just as important as Duke, Kansas getting them on the front end. I will take a Russell Wilson type athlete for just one year. Why would Russell have ever left NC State you must ask?

If you are recruiting, this has to be one of your tools nowadays. Im surprised it hasn't hit wrestling as much quite yet. But I can garuantee Cael has explored this with holes in his lineups for an upcoming season. Wouldn't surprise me to see him pull some stud from a lesser school someday. He already used ISU as a farm system once. Im sure some Clarion kid who wants to go to happy valley for a grad program will happen at some point.

Down fall is its not as abundant since wrestlers are weight based versus just throwing 5 guys on a court for playing time. But still, Iowa has 2-3 holes every year.

I agree with what you are saying. But two points:

1. You guys don't need to do it to win.
2. You have to have scholarship money in the spring (in most cases)...PSU cough cough

Not sure what you are alluding to? You saying PSU has more scholarship money to give out than other schools?

No. I'm not alluding to anything like that.

PSU has more money than everybody else to give out within NCAA rules is what i'm saying.

Edit to add: Wrestling is the ONLY NCAA sport that allows booster funding of post graduate athletes. Only one.

Its a level playing field. PSU just has more money is all.

But you cant pay a post graduate kid and still have him eligible right? That would only apply to the HWC/NLWC. I am talking about post grad transfers that are immediately eligible to compete in NCAA competition. There are a few hoops to jump through but my understanding is you have to have athletic eligibility left and graduated on time or early, then the school you are transferring from must not have that same post grad program as the one you are going to.

I am not sure how many programs have Post grad dentist programs but Iowa may need more stud wrestler who want to be dentists in 4 yrs.

Hypothetically If Willie Miklus graduated this spring from Mizzou and they didn't have a grad program that Iowa did, correct me if I am wrong but he could be in Iowa's lineup at 197 next season. As I believe he only used one RS and the OTC didn't start his clock right away. He would have one season left in free agency so to speak.

Iowa needs a lot more than a low AA for a shot at a team title, cmon man!
