Trouble brewing in Ames. Caleb Grill kicked off team

There’s a few fans making fun of him on here… Did they feel the same way about Patrick?
No, and Caleb says what they kicked him off the team for, if you bothered to read it instead of using it to bash Iowa State.
Just says he said something he regrets. What could someone with known mental health issues possibly say that deserves kicking him to the curb?!

Patrick got nothing but support from both staff & fans at Iowa…..as it should be.

He said in his statement that he said something he regrets that for him kicked off the team. He very much implied what he said was related to his mental health. Also says in his statement that he thought about ending his life.
If it’s a mental health issue and he said something very regrettable due to that mental health issue this looks very bad on TJ for kicking him off the team and not getting him the help he needs.

I’d be more worried about your coach and why he kicked him off the team instead of what a few posters here are saying. Bad look on ISU.

Does the NCAA consider availability of players when making seeding determinations? It is distant history, now, but back in the day Cincinnati got dropped in its seeding when Kenyon Martin went down in the CUSA tournament with a broken leg. Caleb Grill is no Kenyon Martin, but his absence makes this team worse.

They are realistically looking at 17-14 with a loss to Baylor and a loss in the first round of the Big 12 tournament. They would be 2-10 in their last 12 games. I don't think that is a tournament-worthy resume.
The hilarious thing is they could lose out, and ISU fans would still argue they should get a higher seed than Iowa because "Big 12 so tuff".

And I could honestly see the committee being dumb enough to do that because the NET is obsessed with the Big 12 this year.............

There’s really only 1 thing that can get you kicked off a basketball team.
Hell you can bring a drunk guy a loaded weapon, block a car in, get your car shots up, and someone ends up getting killed and that doesn’t get you a second look but some words….
Like I said.

If the kid was refusing to get help you sometimes need to take extreme action. ISU cannot comment due to HIPPA. Otz is closer to that kid than just about anyone around.

Short of dropping the hard R on a certain word… rather interesting what couldve been said to get the boot.

There’s no way it could be a mental/suicidal issue. ISU would be sued to the point - they’d have to shut down the university.

This has to be it.
That or he banged Mrs. whataburger and bragged about it.
Of course im just tossing that out there… you really hope that its not the case, but that just seems like about the only things that will get you the boot these days… and rightfully so. I really hope he is not playing the mental health card to score some sympathy points… if so total heel move.

Probably…there were some idiots- chances are there are some repeat idiots. Threads are there - scroll back

My Cyclone buddy told me Grill is off the team effective immediately

Grill had the meltdown in the WVA game that pretty much sealed ISU's loss.

Guessing there's way, way more to the story than will be made public.

Yeah, there's really not even a lot of rumors about it. I hope he gets the help he needs. In these situations if he wants privacy he deserves it.

TJ and Grill and that whole family are incredibly close. This has to be incredibly difficult for everybody involved.

Yeah I agree that's the thing. What ever he did had to have been pretty bad to be kicked off the team few days before the end of the regular season. Mental health can only go far as an excuse. Can be a contributing factor but can't solely lay blame on it because end of the day he's a 22 year old man, not some 18 year old freshman, and the bucks stops with him on his actions or what he says and does. seems like for most part taking accountability and believe has an extra year left so maybe finds peace somewhere else for his 5th year.

Has OSU released a statement? Seems odd that you'd use the language "kicked off" if you are having mental illness issues.

But maybe it's a reporter/tweeter wanting attention.

Hopefully he gets any help he needs

If the incident in question is mental health related, why not silently remove him from games and get him the help he needs, while just saying he's injured?
If the incident in question isn't mental health related, and is against team guidelines, then they're handling it as they should.

Where? I read it. The statement linked here says nothing about a cause and certainly doesn’t imply a struggle with mental health. I agree with the others that it’s quite shameful for ISU to kick him off for mental health issues.

ETA: my bad, I missed the second set off for text pictures
