Trying to gain weight

Lift heavy, compound movements, 40 grams of protein 5x a day. Hit muscles groups 3x a week, 3 sets to failure. Eat 400 calories over TDEE per day. Egg whites, chicken breast wrapped in lo carb high fiber wraps. A couple protein shakes from fairlife(Sam’s club version). Creatine post workout
you are gonna get @GOHOX69 up to 200+ and wanting to meet up with @jamesvanderwulf and @torbee in a parking lot instead of the pickleball court :)

So, as keen hort readers know, @jamesvanderwulf wants to kick my ass in pickleball. And so far I've deftly avoided him. As i have @torbee. I can guess the latter is younger than me and the former might be a tad older or maybe the same age.

As I approach my mid 50's, I notice I'm losing muscle mass. My science gig still requires on my feet action etc but obviously I'm not an athlete.

My question to hort adonises is how do I gain some additional muscle mass so this pickleball thing happens before I'm dead.
@jamesvanderwulf wants to kick my ass :):):) Malarky...

As a fellow ICW alumni, my intent was to introduce an ex tennis player to the rules and then the nuances of the game so that you might hold your own vs. the blood thirsty geriatrics that prowl the courts looking for fresh meat. Racket ( paddle ) skills, quickness and smarts are what you need not bulk, but I think you know that. ;) Are you still working across from the Hygienic Lab on Oakdale Blvd? I drive by 3 times a week at 7:30 am. We need to make a plan...before I'm dead. I'm a couple three " tads " older than you...

I actually don't. I'm transiting into my own gig and looking for commercial space. If you know of any, please hit me up. Like for realz.

P.S. you know I like to kid you right? I would meet any of you for a drink. I've met 2 in real life.

What are your requirements for space? Office? Warehouse? High traffic area? There would seem to be a glut of commercial spaces from what I see. Maybe they're overpriced, IDK...

There are lots of unoccupied spaces. I've started to call. Empty space with some office. Some biotech machinery will go in.

Maybe you should wait. Isn't Harris promising 50K incentives for new new start up business? That being said there are a ton of new " pole building " type spaces being built down here in Hills, just off I 380/27...

My entire group is 60 something rich white guys. I don't think they're waiting for Harris. 😀

Sounds like I'm out, I only meet 2/3 of that criteria...missing...the rich part. I can wash test tubes, I guess...
You'll be just fine. I just need to get this shit set up and meet you and torbee. I'm a giant introvert and besides getting in shape, need to change that.

At 5'10 and 170lb why are you concerned with bulking up? You should maintain that weight and look to increase your core strength and not add muscle mass. Walking/Running and simply lifting weights or exercises should help you achieve that.
No. It's all about body composition. Maybe if he has not an ounce of fat on him. What he most likely should do is lose fat, gain muscle and end up in the neighborhood of his current weight.

(What a good weight might be depends... You'd have to understand his bone structure etc)

I hate working out so I never have. However, in my 50s now and I can feel the muscles shrinking.

I’ve started working out with light weights but high reps. I do it fast because working out bores the hell out of me.

Seems to make a difference in tone and strength, but if I get busy and miss a few days I can tell.

Any downside to what I’m doing?

Yeah, your spending more time and being less effective, than if you just lifted moderate to heavy weights for a few sets per muscle group a week.

What your describing in feeling and aesthetic is probably "the pump" from doing those exercises. Not that there's anything wrong with high rep exercises, it's just not going to lead to hypertrophy or significant muscle growth. You're going to get more of a toned aesthetic doing that long enough. Don't sacrifice form for speed either, make sure your reps are clean and have good motion and that will help with injury especially if you have lingering shoulder problems. Do you know what the cause of your pain is? If you haven't had it diagnosed consider the real possibility of a muscle imbalance contributing to your pain. It's important to have a well balanced lifting plan. Simple way to think of it is to do a push motion for every pull motion you do. Think push up vs pull up for chest/back balance.

OP, saw some about gyms etc. No clue what @ClarindaA's told you. I can tell you my no pic wife has been doing a number of the streaming service medium weight / body resistance videos. It's working out amazingly for her. But she has also combined that multi year commitment with a shift in our overall diet which has helped me as well even though I don't participate in the AM shakes.

I will say, I have found the BCAA powder in my drink has helped me recover a LOT after my workouts.

Latest on BCAAs is that if you are protein deficient, they make a difference, if you aren’t protein deficient, they don’t hurt but don’t help a ton. Creatine is amazing as long as you don’t have any kidney issues. Read up on benefits of creatine, it goes being muscle.

Funny, I was going to mention creatine but didn't. I don't take it now, did in the past. I was reading up that it also is good for joints and brain functions... You have any specific articles you have to read about it?

Even if the BCAA is in my head, I really feel like my muscle ache is down when I take it consistently vs not. Esp my shoulders. I'd be fine with extra muscle and have no kidney issues. But to be clear, I am occasionally weight lifting as a side, my workouts are actually BJJ.

It's really not that hard. You don't need to add that much more calories to your diet. We're only talking like 250 to 400 to make sure you're covering for the extra calories burned weight lifting. Have a glass of milk and a peanut butter sandwich or something with good protein/nutrition. Try to get at least 100 grams of protein a day.

You could probably maintain your current diet and do fine for a while. There is such a thing as beginner gains -- if you're somebody that hasn't developed your muscles too much that means you have a lot of possible ground to cover. You'll start seeing it right away if you're faithful with your work outs and get enough sleep, basically.

Another thing I became a big fan of: simple lifts that work a bunch of muscle groups. I can stay in decent upper body shape by just doing standing military presses regularly.
