Tuesdays With Torbee - What Happens After a Whiteout Wipeout?

It doesn’t sound like Iowa is trying to reinvent itself on offense though. Brian said in his 4/20 press conference they were going to do the same stuff but do it better.

Well, if we could stay healthy, it technically would look better...................it's just not very good.

Iowa went into a road night game with a beat up QB, it’s third string running back and it’s best pass catcher sidelined.

The result was bad, but not unexpected.

Need to get Kaleb and Jazz back and Cade to continue to improve health wise and I think Iowa will score some points against non-elite defenses.

Kaleb and Patterson and Lachey were making no difference in that game Saturday night. It’s the scheme, the line, the offensive coordinator, and cade being injured.

That is an impossible hypothesis to back up.
Unless they're blocking up front I think it's not that impossible. Lachey might have caught a few more passes, but he can't catch a pass from a QB on his back and I'm thinking PSU might have paid some attention to him given the fact that Iowa doesn't pass to anybody else. Kaleb and Jaz aren't any better at running into walls than Williams and Moulton are.

I saw in Chad Leistikow's article that Iowa passes to our WRs 37% of the time which of course is dead last in FBS. But the disturbing thing is that Navy is 2nd to last and they are 54% of the time. We are passing way less to WRs compared to an Option football team in Navy. Holy Sh*t. The deeper you look at the stats the more disturbing they get.

And yet, just like Petras last year, It's Cade this year taking the bullets from the media today instead of Brian standing up there.

I used to eye roll posters that threw jabs at Iowa's use of wide receivers by constantly asking "can they block?".

I don't eye roll anymore. They might as well roll out a couple of fullbacks and split them wide.

My point is they’d be getting carries and catches - Lachey too, for that matter.

Iowa was short handed on established experience on offense Saturday.
Iowa doesn't have any Saquon Barkleys on the payroll. All of these guys need an actual hole to run through. There were no holes and the difference between these backs isn't as great as people think.

Kirk has to know the o-line sucks along with Brian F why not design more quick passing plays and get your supposed upgrade in wr's the ball, be creative on how you use wr's move them around in the formations not just doing the same old we will out execute you mantra.

interesting...

we weren't missing any WR's and they couldn't get open
we weren't missing any OL's and they couldn't block

having our injured RB's and TE wouldn't have made a single damn difference
Iowa WR'S have caught a total of 14 passes for 148 yards so they weren't really missed anyway. FWIW, there are 275 individuals who have more receiving yards than all of the Iowa wide receivers combined.

This is the greatest mystery to me.

My only hypothesis is they still think they can coach/teach the o-line to not suck - but frankly, seems like a losing proposition. Better to try and scheme around their deficiencies.

because he thinks that stuff is a magical pill. His answer is that the OL needs to get better at doing what he wants.

As Norm Parker used to say. " It doesn't matter what you know. What matters is what your players can do.

Sometimes your players can't do what you want. You have to find an approach they can do.

And yet, just like Petras last year, It's Cade this year taking the bullets from the media today instead of Brian standing up there.
When questioned about the lack of production of the wide receivers by the press, Cade responded that he's not the guy calling the plays. He might as well have said that if people have questions about the way the offense is being operated, they should be talking to Brian.

I try not to read/look too deep, but it’s like trying not to look at a car wreck as you drive by…🥲

It's funny, every spring the talk is that the 'WR room' is vastly improved and will raise eyebrows in Sept....yet each regular season brings the same disappointment. From some odd reason we seem to be money when it comes to recruiting RBs and TEs, but are clueless when it comes to WRs. I was actually pretty stoked when Keagan and A-Bruce splashed on the scene, but that faded quickly....and by years' end we had a room full of walk-on WRs who wouldn't sniff the field for most BT programs.:(

Well Charlie Jones proved that it's not about talent. It's about this offense that fails to utilize whatever WR talent is there. I won't argue that this is a top 25 WR room, but it's certainly better than it was last year and the results are worse. When you go out and get arguably better WR's and a better QB and the production drops, it stops being a personnel issue. Even Ragaini who's been around for years is seeing his production drop. This offense and the people responsible for it just suck. It's become a graveyard for QB's and wide receivers.

Iowa should just replace the WRs with a few more TE types on the field at the same time. 1) we might actually throw to one of them. 2) The opposing defense would not know which one to defend.

Agreed 100% - I was going to weave something about Jones in there, but that proverbial horse has been beaten to death. I am glad that Jones had the balls to walk away and is playing on Sundays now, so that itself is a nice middle finger to BF. ;)

That won't fix anything. There's a reason modern offenses use wide receivers extensively.

Charlie Jones had 1,378 yard receiving last year AND for all the folks that point at winning, he won a big ten west title. Iowa receivers had 795 yards receiving last year and have like 148 this year so far. Do we think our wide receiving yards combined this year and last year will outgain Charlie’s one year at Purdue?!? It will be close!

How about this hypothesis - If I piss on your back and tell you it's raining, would you believe me?

Sorry, you want "acceptance" and anticipate "redemption". If I see a lump of dog shit in the yard, I don't call it fertilizer, I call it what it is.

I appreciate the article, but the offense is what it is. Nothing will change, until there is change.

It’s a fair argument for sure.

But I saw some glimmers in the first three games.

PSU might have the best defense in the country this year, so I need to see a bigger sample size to make a final verdict.

was he asked about WR targets or catches? That stat is embarrassing. And it will kill recruiting. There is no way that's not scheme.
it's funny, being a Bears fan all the pundits are saying their scheme sucks as well - their OC is horrible and will probably will be gone by mid-season....unfortunately I can't predict the same fate for Iowa's OC. 😥

We saw glimmers in the 1st three games. That mirror got broken in the 4th and I actually believe reality is setting in.

Iowa has an easy schedule from here on out. They should be favored in all except v Wisky. If they go 10-2, but have the 115th ranked offense, would you be satisfied?
