Thinking back at the NIU game, I don't remember Shaun Beyer getting a target. I think our TE's will be the difference in this game.

Interesting Brincks listed as starter because Gholston got the majority of reps at that spot Saturday.

I wondered if Jones lost the job when he got pulled in the 1st qtr and did not return until mop up time

Kyle Groeneweg surely will be returning punts...right?
You would think he would still be returning punts. That is the best an Iowa punt returner has looked in a long time.

Apparently it was one of the first things KF mentioned in his press conference.

it was extremely impressive how no punts hit the ground (if i recall correctly); also, i believe he had return yardage on every punt except the first one, where he fair caught it

too bad we only have him one year; impressive job indeed

Nate Vejvoda has carved out a spot for himself on the two deep as a long snapper. I wondered where he sat because we have seen so many TE’s excel at IOWA recently.

He played TE at Providence Catholic, same position and school as Eric Steinbach. Had hopes that Nate would be a standout, but glad to see him in the mix somewhere.

I think tho ever the list on the DL is pointless this team will play 6-8 guys all year and from what I could tell only Anthony Nelson was the only de who didn’t play a snap at dt.. was really impressed with Golston, and damn Hesse and epenesa... get that dt next to m Nelson this line will be something great

Disappointed, but not surprised, to see Groeneweg isn't starting at SE on Saturday...or at least he isn't according to the depth chart. The starting SE played no better than the starting MLB against NIU, but the SE keeps his spot while the MLB gets benched.

It's time for Brandon Smith to show something on the field. If he isn't getting it done against ISU, Groeneweg had better get a shot early to see if he can. That seems only fair.

In defense to smith what did you see that he messed up?? He had two targets on two really bad passes. He blocked well,

I think Gholston played both DT and DE on the left side, so I don't know if he played more DT snaps then Brincks or not. Hope this lights a fire under Ced and Reiff for that matter and they both play with their butts on fire on Saturday. VERY solid look to the DL at this point.......

He had more then two targets, and on a couple it was very obvious he was not where Stanley expected him to be on the route. There was one play in the deep middle that Smith never got within 7 or 8 yards of where Nate threw the ball. I doubt that Nate missed him by that much. For all of Smith's physicality, it appeared he let the NIU DB's control where he was going with his route. That just should not happen. I think the reason many folks are disappointed, is the amount of praise coming out of camp about his improvement. This led to expectations of him breaking out, yet in game one it looked like more of the same. I truely hope he becomes the player, the coaches seem to think he can become, but something needs to happen on the positive side soon. We NEED a playmaker on that side of the field BADLY.

I guess everyone was expecting the MLB switch, I would also say it's a given the coaches are more than pleased with depth on both OL/DL and players will see a fair amount of PT as they rotate players to keep them fresh. It was great to not see our guys gassed at the end.

Not sure why Groeneweg isn't listed 1st?

Sounds a lot like the performance for Amani Jones, lots of talent and hype, but failing to relay that to the playing field.

Hey, its been awhile since I was on the boards last, haven't really been keeping up with player status, what happened/where is the kicker Keith Duncan? Didn't he red shirt last year to save a year of eligibility?

Gonna recommend the pause button on the Groeneweg love train. First, our 2 best receivers are ISM and Easley. Hands down. If we're moving to play someone, getting them into different positions is the move. Groeneweg - not as a dig on him at all - has shown nothing at wr YET. He may be Heisman caliber but liking the backup because you don't like the starter is a disease. Second, "impressive" is not even close to what I would call the punt return game from game 1. Impressive? 5 for 42 with a long of 12. I will fully affirm and celebrate catching the ball. That is the most important thing. No question. But, impressive? How low are our hopes if we're thinking that's noteworthy. Tim Dwight is impressive. This is pedestrian. If that's the best we can do, I appreciate what Groeneweg did and will take mistake free football.

In other news, I'm all of the sudden really happy with our O-line depth. Funny how quickly things change! Go Hawks!

Not by my count. Chauncey saw a lot of DT reps ... that is true. However, Brincks saw even more DT snaps.

Chauncey just so happens to also be part of our "NASCAR" package ... so he's a primary rusher on obvious passing downs.

I see Lattimore did not get his starting spot back.

Hockaday over Jones feels like the right move for now.

The OL is the status quo we all expected, but it will be interesting to see if Kallenberger or Levi Paulsen work their way in there as the season progresses.
The Iowa DT rotation will still be pretty active. The D saw 62 snaps. Given that the Hawks feature a bend-but-not-break philosophy on D ... there will be games where the D has to face 80 to 90 snaps. In such a case, the DL will need as many guys as possible in the rotation. Fortunately, we have the quality of guys to have such a rotation ... and to have relatively little drop-off between the starters to the back-ups!

A friend who's much more savvy than I (he's a high school coach) felt Smith's routes were bad among other things.
i distinctly remember one play where he made his route cut right into the cb and another where he made his cut and then stopped running, which lead to an in-completion.

i'm pulling for the kid, but the light isn't coming on... yet.

That’s not true. The very first pass was more than catchable. There was a strike that Stanley threw where he tried to cradle the ball instead of getting his hands out and catching the ball. Another was a really bad route ran by Smith.

I do agree about him being a good blocker.

"That seems only fair" (You need to then add) based on my VERY LIMITED time to evaluate since I don't see practice and my VERY unprofessional opinion since I'm not a coach and only a free online poster

Yeah ... it looks like the OL has a chance to be pretty decent this year. Hopefully they keep on coming along development-wise!
The absences last week (via injury or poor play) could have been bad, but now at full strength...royal flush it seems!

What happened is he got beat out by a better kicker. Recinos has shown to have the much stronger leg, and over the last two seasons made considerable improvement on his accuracy. He was 11 for 13 last season on field goals and has range out to the mid 50's maybe longer.

I think the first incomplete pass was more due to Smith not coming back to the ball as well. I'd agree he's a pretty good blocker, but if you go back and watch that jet sweep we ran with ISM, that play had a chance for nice yardage but Smith missed his block on the line, and his counterpart made the tackle for a short gain.

Um, yeah I know Recinos got the nod, last I heard Duncan redshirted last year to both keep a year of eligibility and hopefully gain some leg strength. So....question is why isn't he #2. Did he fall down the depth chart, injury, etc.....hence the original question.

Agreed, being a physical specimen will only get you so far, time to put some hustle behind his muscle. ;)

I agree. Paulsen did a great job Saturday on Sutton. Both Paulsens where in together side by side on a goal line score and they destroyed the NIU D Line.

I want to temper my excitement, but this might be some of the best depth Iowa has ever had on the OL.

I think all 8 DL in the two deeps will see significant snaps and do you feel they could put Big Kall in at guard over the current guards.....? He look pretty comfy at tackle but I guess they always go with the 5 best.

Sam did a good job Saturday. We certainly have a good situation in the D-Line. Cedric will get some snaps this week.

Sounded like he got beat out for that #2 spot.

And some solid additions on the way with Ince and Jenkins in the fold, and the two Behemoth tackles coming in next season.
