Two Deeps/Game Notes for Iowa vs. Iowa State

People expecting smith to be an impact receiver are going to be super disappointed. So many on here with no clue about actual football skills and drooling because he physically looks good. Not too bright

Agreed that he did not look good on Saturday. I'm not giving up on him yet though. The coaches obviously see potential in him so I'm hoping it was just first game jitters and he pulls it together as we move on.

In defense to smith what did you see that he messed up?? He had two targets on two really bad passes. He blocked well,

Ran a bad route on one for sure. Went in and should have curled out. And on that pick if you aren't getting the ball make sure the D Back does not! Interfere if you have to!

That was Smith's first extended game action. He saw limited reps last year. Some of it might have been nerves. The coaches and even Big Ten crew singled him out as a someone that was making big plays. I see him in the same shoes as Smith-Marsette last year, i.e. inconsistent but will make some plays at times. In a normal world these two would be seeing spot duty right now but because Iowa had been so bad at getting WRs these guys are being forced to be the 'guys' earlier than normal.

And some solid additions on the way with Ince and Jenkins in the fold, and the two Behemoth tackles coming in next season.
Yeah, I really have liked our OL classes.

OT: Plumb ('18), Miller ('19), Endres ('19)
versatile: Ince ('18), Britt ('19)
OG: Jenkins ('18), Fenske

I know that the coaches even have Britt projected to C ... although he's the sort of guy who could probably do a perfectly good job at OG or OT too! I love Jenkins attitude - he definitely has a little "mean" in him ... and that's terrific for an O-lineman to have. I really like how Miller has been a front-man for us in recruiting ... that suggests to me that the young man is a future leader for us. Lastly, I think that Plumb might just surprise folks ... he has the quick feet of a basketball player ... but also the football IQ of a kid who grew up living and breathing football.

Anyhow, I'm excited about Iowa's OL ... both in the present and the future!
