Tyler Cook future

I confess to not knowing exactly what this means for his future but I think it means he’ll soon be cut by Denver? Maybe they send him to their developmental team in whatever league. Will he make much money doing this or better off in Europe?
I’m guessing it means he plays with their summer league team and is possibly invited to their preseason camp if he does well in the summer. Doesn’t mean anything about making a regular season roster or practice squad though. But it does give him a chance,

Chris Emens of Octagon, the sports-management agency representing Cook, said via email that Cook “suffered a high ankle sprain in a workout with the Detroit Pistons, so unfortunately he will be unable to play Summer League.”

I looked up average European pro player salary, and it appears to be between $65-100K. Salaries for NBA draft picks are roughly 20-200× this much. It seems to me like he would be better off at Iowa for one more year working on what the NBA evaluators say he needs to improve. Then try for the NBA next year. If it doesn't work out, he would have a college degree and Europe to fall back on.

Was not going to help him. He can finish a semester or two any time. That’s an outdated mindset for these guys. He will be forward 65-120k that he’d never get that back staying another year. The reality is he is what he is.

Yes, but while it sounds easy, a lot of guys never make it back to finish...especially now that it's on their dime. Well under half return to finish. (30-40% depending on who's stats you read) Hope TC makes some money following his dream and then gets his degree.

I would define a "crazy good athlete" for basketball as having elite level speed, quickness, power/strength, and leaping ability in some combination.
Baer is a smart player who excelled because of his effort and court sense.
One thing he is not, though, is a great athlete in comparison to his peers.
He had quickness & was easily the 2nd best jumper on the team.

He was a good athlete.

Don’t let him being white automatically disqualify him from being a good athlete.

It will still be free if he comes back to Iowa for the degree, and he will get the same support he does now (advisors, access to the Gerdin Center, etc.).
what does your first statement refer to? i plead ignorance. does he still get the benefit of the unused years of the athletic scholarship, at the school that granted it, at a future date?

I see what your saying, but degree aside, he was close to NBA draft territory. One more year of college hoops, and maybe he gets there. By leaving early for Europe he's closing the door on a potentially big pay day in the NBA, for the immediate gratification of a modest European contract. I'm not aware of many (if any) players that left college early to go to Europe and then made the NBA later. But there are lots of players that stick around for their senior year and make the NBA because of it. Essentially the trade off here is one year of European income ($65K) vs. a shot at getting NBA drafted next year, multiple millions of $, a year of paid college and living expenses, and worst case scenerio entering Europe 1 year later. I would have chosen the second option.

I’m not sure he was not even that close to being drafted. As of the final draft picks he was not listed in the next 10 best available. Some of the mock draft rankings had him in the high 80’s to 90’s of a 60 player draft. Getting into the second round as a 4th year player is not a guarantee of anything. That’s hardly ‘hoop dreams’.

The NBA is all about potential. Next year, there will be a whole new crop of early entries of all varieties. His game would have to grow insurmountably in this last season at Iowa and there is no way realistically that was going to happen. Returning for his junior year moved him up what 5 draft spots? It was time for him to see what he could scratch out while he still can make something somewhere. Then see if you can get lucky and find a way in.

It would have benefited us to have him return no doubt but not much from his perspective.

There are plenty of guys making 200k euro to a million overseas. Coolk might not make that the first year, but he has a chance to make a lot more than $65k.

Was listening to this by Fourplay and checking on TC when I discovered he signed a partially guaranteed contract with the Nuggets. Good luck TC!!

I would think a year in NBA G-league vs better competition and NBA farm system coaching is better for his development then trying be a point forward at Iowa and turning the ball over a bunch. NBA evaluators will be brutally honest with Cook and he'll know exactly what he needs to improve.

The ankle injury is unfortunate for his aspirations.

How so? He gave up his scholarship and left the team.

The scholarship allows him to come back and finish his degree under scholarship as long as the reason for leaving was a "bona fide" reason and he was in good academic standing when he left (which he was).

The school is allowed some discretion if he were to get into trouble, or leave for a reason they don't consider legitimate, but those instances are going to be few and far between as the school wants to be able to show recruits how much they care about their education and this is just another tool to do so.

That's interesting. Wouldn't an athletic scholarship require participation in the athletic program and count against our NCAA scholly limit? Is this a U of I courtesy policy or an NCAA exception...or perhaps both? Technically not an athletic scholarship?

I see he is listed as the 94th best player in the draft. They have him listed as a Center. He is not coming back to Iowa, so assuming he does not get drafted tomorrow, which is very likely, where is he going? G League? Overseas? I still dont understand why he is leaving early, when he knows he wont get drafted.
Tyler Cook should make an NBA team because they are looking for players that are specialists and provide a spark.

Where did you get this information? This goes against pretty much every thing I've ever heard or experienced with my own experience in college athletics with teammates that left the team early. In my experience, if you leave the team your scholarship goes away. The exception sometimes is if you can no longer play because of an injury or health reasons. College teams have a finite number of scholarships they can give out at any one time.

This sounds more like it. If it isn't it should be the case.

Iowa State gives a lot of help to former players to get their degrees. A player from the mid-2000s just got a degree this year.

It's not on their dime, genius.

You're wrong

This isn't new...it's been the case for 4-5 years now.
