Tyler Cook not invited to NBA combine

Who's supposed to be in charge of the team, the coaches or players? Cook never should have been allowed to try to be point guard and do some of the things he was trying to do. That's on the coaches no doubt.

Fran can’t win. He gets beaten up for being a “player’s coach” and allowing Cook freedom and then we hear he is suppressing someone like Moss and not giving him a long enough leash. Which is it? I agree he shouldn’t have allowed Cook to effectively work on his game and NBA skills to the detriment of the team but I imagine he was hopeful that Cook could put it together and be the “man” as him and Cook likely envisioned 3 years ago but Cook couldn’t put it all together. And like was mentioned above, it seems like when he realized he couldn’t do those things and Fran let him know that, his effort went down.

Have fun playing in Turkey TC. But at least you'll be getting paid now vs having to wait one more year.

Well if Iowa’s staff has a clue and shared it with him, he’d be coming back to Iowa City and working in a realistic game plan his senior year.

Weak side rebounder, garbage points, better FT shooting, and ONLY handle the ball when deep in the post. I could see him being a Reggie Evans double-double type (14-11-3) and maybe with some better D getting a chance.
Great advice that should’ve been given after his frosh year and worked on diligently the past two.

It obviously was not.

If only some of us had predicted this! I'm shocked!

What still bothers me is Tyler either doesn't listen to his coaches/advisers or his coaches/advisers are equally clueless.

Two know nothing morons agreeing with one another on something they are totally clueless about. Shocking!

Their you have it. All the development under Fran paying off. I get tired of everyone saying Fran doesn’t do this or do that but bottom line is his players love playing for him and Tyler has a great career as a Hawk. Let’s support him!

For the record Tyler made 2nd team all-league.
Reading fans comments on here, one would think he was one of the ten worst players in the league, not one of the ten best,as voted on by coaches...
If he stuck around next year and sincerely worked on improving his game (as many of us on here implored him to do the past two years), perhaps he’d have been voted one of the five best in the conference and gotten an invite to the 2020 NBA combine.

Just say’n.

Good for Tyler. I hope he excels at the Combine and gets drafted in the 2nd round- partially for his own successes, but also to rub in the face of all the idiot Iowa fans who had nothing but negative things to say about Tyler and his game.

Last I heard, no NBA team has said they would draft Cook in either the 1st of 2nd round as of yet. Advancing to the NBA combine is just a stepping stone, and I'll give him credit for putting his best foot forward to advance.
It would be nice to see him get drafted, but it doesn't mean that he will ever see a minute on an NBA floor. His game is no where near NBA material.
6'9 athletic freaks that have no game beyond 5 feet and can only dunk at slightly more then 50% are a dime a dozen.
After watching him play in almost 100 games at Iowa it has pretty much cemented my opinion of his game.
Doesn't mean I'm right or that an NBA team sees more in him then I do, it's only one man's opinion. Good luck Tyler!

You are an idiot if you think he hasn't been working on improving his game the past two years. He has improved a great deal the past two years, making 2nd Team All Big Ten this year. Whether he is drafted or not, I think Tyler will get an opportunity with an NBA team in the next two years.

So anyone who didn't agree with you are idiot fans. They were just saying it's really hard for someone to get to the NBA who can't guard and can't shoot from outside the free throw lane. But Dennis Rodman made one hell of a living doing just that:p But he did play defense a lot better than Tyler...

Maybe people don’t follow recruiting like I do, but if you saw cook in high school the idea that this staff didn’t work wonders is ridiculous. Cook could barely dribble or make a free throw.

He's certainly improved a lot but to say could barely dribble? I guess in HS he was an efficient dribbler. Saw a good number of his games and his ability to catch and face the basket and put the ball on the deck with either hand and attack and finish with either hand was to me his most impressive quality. Mostly 1 or 2 dribbles so I guess I see your point. But you could certainly see he had room to grow and really still does. Excited to follow TC's journey.

No, he hasn’t. So much wasted potential. No invite to the NBA combine. Will never step foot onto a court during an NBA game...not even warm ups. Wasted his opportunity by not developing the mid range jumper. Doesn’t know how, or gives minimal effort in positioning for rebounds. Won’t play defense.

You keep singing his praises if it makes you feel better.

Fran and his teammates consistently have said that TC was the hardest working guy on the team so if he has not developed as fans hope it was not for lack of effort.
Being invited to the NBA Combine after his 7 for7 shooting performance at the other combine gives him his shot...good luck Tyler!

Oh, and was only one if the most willing and tenacious rebounders of all time. If you aren’t particularly skilled, then you need to be an absolute stud specialist to make it in the NBA like Rodman, Reggie Evans, or Kyle Korver.

Wut?

What a bunch of losers picking on Cook who's crime is he wants to play basketball and worked very hard to be able to. The kid may never see a NBA team but he's following his dream. This board has so many basketball experts, he'll be laughing at us cashing checks.

You miss the part where he was invited to the NBA combine?

Not exactly. He moved a level up, good for TC and hopefully he'll continue to do well.
But he didn't go from afterthought to lottery pick. Let's hold the parade for now.
My post was regarding the title of this post as Cook DID in fact get an invite to the combine. And he earned it. I said nothing about him being a lottery pick.

Yep. But it's still true he wasn't invited initially. He was able to work his way in with good showing at the camps. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

According to the article I read this morning, Tyler made 10 of 11 shots (probably several of those were dunks) and scored 24 points in 38 minutes over the two games he played at the camp. Who knows? Maybe Tyler's game translates better at this level than it did playing college ball. Along with most Iowa fans, I am wishing him well.

You know nothing youngster. The only thing that sucks is how Iowa fans can bang on a great kid. He was an excellent rep of the school , just an overall plus for the program.
He has very limited talent and won't sniff the NBA.

Awesome job by Tyler.

Per usual, idiot fans feel the need to trash a kid and file it under the guise of "realism". Losers.

False premise. Each player needs a little something different, there's no one-size-fits-all. You (and your staff of assistants) assess what a kid needs to perform to his potential...then you coach him accordingly. It's possible that both of those approaches were wrong...it's also possible that they were both the right angle for those particular players...or a mix there of. It's not an either or.

And you are just the one to tell this coaching staff how it should be done. BTW, where is it you coach? LOL!
