What's the story on perhaps the highest rated and least talked about QB on the Iowa roster. The guy who will be our starting QB next year should anything at all happen to CJ. It's a little odd how majorly this kid has been overlooked by fans.

He came in rated by Rivals as the #14 qb prospect in the nation. 4 stars. Big frame at 6'4. Pocket passer. On the other hand, despite the accolades, his next best offer were MAC schools like Toledo and Bowling Green.

So is this guy legit or not? He hasn't really shown anything in games so far. Is he turning heads at practice? I saw him play in the spring game last year and he was Rudock-esque in his desire to check down to the 3 yard passes. But I would imagine the kid has a big arm, given his accolades coming out of hs. Is he going to be our starting qb in 2017 and 2018, or will someone pass him by?

His offer list is low because he was a Rutgers decommit a little late in the process

He is a backup to a very good QB. He may be our next favorite.

Pretty hard to make any predictions about him based on the very small sample size we have been able to see this far. Hopefully CJ and company will blow some teams out this fall and Tyler will get some valuable experience.

Problem with Tyler is that he doesn't have as many high school buddies and family that come to the board to talk him up like others. Everyone knows the ONLY way to become first string QB is to become an internet sensation first.:D

Here is a quick list of things I've heard. (These are not my opinions, only things I've heard.) Can anyone confirm or dispel them?

  • TW has a huge arm. Bigger than CJ's.
  • TW has an accuracy issue.
  • Some players have said Boyle is the real deal and will be #2 next year.
  • The lack of big name offers diminished the 4 star excitement.
I know I've heard a few more things but they're not coming to me right now.

TW was committed to Rutgers for a long time.
MSU and Mich both signed 4* QB's in 2013 so QB was not a position of need in the 2014 class.
In the very little I've seen of TW I have been impressed. He certainly looks the part at 6-4, 225.
I fully expect him to take over in 2017.

I remember Davis and Beathard saying that Wiegers had progressed a ton last year and Davis said if he had to step in for Beathard he would be confident in him. I think he is going to be a good one and hopefully we get to see him because Iowa blows a couple teams out next year.

FWIW.....I have not forgot about Tyler, after all he is one injury from being our starter. I would also bet that the coaching staff has not forgot about him either.

I recall the same thing. Kirk too mentioned TW's progress. But.............I have heard from the mouths of players that Boyle will be the man. I'm not arguing here. Only trying to figure it out. Perhaps mobility is a bigger thing to our players and staff than we as fans perceive. (And remember, Boyle was redshirting and now has a year under his belt.)

Probably players that were playing with him on scout team.

Nope. Receivers. (I just find it interesting. I'm for the best man winning the job. It's just interesting to analyze this based on the wide scope of information.)

The only way Boyle is #2 next year is if Wiegers gets injured or hell freezes over.

I too was surprised when they told me this. But as I said, this is not my opinion, I'm merely repeating what I was told.

A little skeptical about fans trying to figure out who's Iowa next QB will be based on how many stars he received coming out of HS. AJ Derby is a good example of a 4 star QB coming out of HS who couldn't play the position in college. More will probably be know after spring and fall practices. The coaches will have more to go on and confident they will make the best decision.

Agreed. The great thing is that we will have a ton of competition at QB. Boyle must be very mobile. Another thing to keep in mind is that I heard this during the season. Things change.

These are scouting reports from high school on Wiegers:

From 247:
"He has a nice, fluid throwing motion and great footwork. He gets the ball out quickly on his three-step drops, and does a terrific job of planting his back foot and stepping into his five-step.

Wiegers has a beautiful deep ball with good touch and accuracy, but he can also zip the intermediate throw. He understands the timing of routes and will throw his receivers open. He'll also release the football before the route breaks, which is not always something you see in a high school quarterback.

He can sprint out to the right or left and throw on the run, and also seems comfortable with the bootleg or the play-action pass.

For as good as a pro-style quarterback Wiegers is, he's almost a borderline dual-threat. He has above average speed and isn't afraid to tuck the ball away and hit the hole. He's an explosive "north and south" runner who will initiate contact and fight for extra yards.

Wiegers threw for 2,100 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2013, compared to just six interceptions. He also ran for 200 yards and five touchdowns."

Midwest recruiting coordinator Josh Helmholdt: “He is a pro style. He's built like a linebacker. He is an impressive-looking kid. He'll be able to stand in the pocket and take the hits. We had him as a four-star early on because he's done some things in 7-on-7 camp settings that really I've almost never seen before. I covered a national 7-on-7 tournament the summer going into his junior year. It was a national championship tournament with tons of Division I prospects. He completed 21 straight passes in that setting. That's really phenomenal. He's one of the most accurate passers I've covered in the past couple of years. He throws such a beautiful ball. With his size, I expect that he learns to put more zip on his passes. He has plenty of arm, but I think that's an area he can improve even further. He's very sound. Game management and seeing the field, those will be aspects he'll want to continue to develop. He is a kid who has some really outstanding tools to work with.”

On NFL draft scout he is projected as the 22nd best NFL QB prospect in his class. Beathard has moved up to #2 by the way.

Good stuff. Thanks. Can you find the same info on Boyle?

Crazy that this guy loves his accuracy and I've been told that is his struggle. Obviously we'll have to wait and see. I did hear his arm is huge and stronger than CJ as I stated earlier. Only 204 days until kick off.

Here is a quick list of things I've heard about Herkmeister. I'm only saying what I've heard does anyone have any information confirming this or not? 1) he makes things up 2) he truly has never spoken to a receiver in his life 3) others want to know why he would post such nonsense

Ha ha ha .............. I could see where you'd draw that conclusion. Defense would be superfluous.:D

Derby was a 4-star athlete coming out of high school, no one rated him as an elite QB. The only one that saw him as a QB was himself.

True, and that is why he came to Iowa because they were going to give him a legit shot at QB. He couldn't accept the fact that he wasn't a QB until his 5th year playing college football. If he had played on defense or as a TE from the beginning he would have a pretty stellar college career.

Here's what I've heard about Herkmeister:

1) he has a small dick, much smaller than most posters.
2) he has a problem with accuracy in his posts
3) I've heard Ghost is a much better poster and will be the real Heisman on the board.
4) His lack of intelligence diminishes his posts.

When was this original? I wonder mainly as I see CJ having an opportunity to be a damn good NFL quarterback.

My two cents. Tyler improved a ton from last spring to late fall. He has consistency issues, but those are also becoming much better. Great arm strength. Very high delivery. Good speed, but he's not going to juke anyone. More of a guy that can get up field and get in his slide. From what I've heard, Boyle did a great job on scout team when he would play a dual threat QB opponent. He didn't ever get snaps with Iowa's offense until bowl prep which was about 5 practices. Boyle has a very odd delivery. He's a guy that will make plays with his feet. I don't think he's the passer that CJ or Tyler are. Boyle will get in space and juke or run you over. He's a kid you may tweak your offense and build around him.

Has Boyle passed Cook?

I don't believe it matters until they spend a spring, summer, and fall practicing and learning the Iowa system. I look forward to this spring to see if they have continued to improve.

Dead on. You are 4 for 4. Well done. You have enlightened my self esteem and for this I am most appreciative. You are a very clever boy.

Spring ball will either settle the issue fan the flames to it. Heard Eddie P. say he was pretty impressed with Wiegers late in the season. All he needs is experience.

It should be a pretty good battle a year from now.

I am hearing similar things about Boyle being the Man after CJ. Hear he is a strong runner with a really good arm and accurate. So dont shoot the messenger. We will see I am sure.

But don't forget Drmac, I make things up and have a small dick!!!!

I think if the depth chart was made today it would be:
CJ
Wiegers
Boyle
Cook
I think all four will continue to improve, but obviously Cook and Boyle could improve the most because of their lack of being in the system. I'll be at clinic, DM scrimmage, and spring game and will give my two cents after that.

To the OP I really haven't heard much about him. There was a rumor he was working down south at a restaurant owned by a former Hawkeye asst coach. Asst manager I believe. But don't quote me on that.
