Tyler Wiegers

Can? Of course.

Since Iowa knows CJ is banged up, TW is getting quality reps time this week, he'll be as ready to go as one can expect. Better Iowa can plan for it instead of throwing Vandenberg in cold like 2009.

I actually am quite excited at the prospect. We all talked about how nice it would have been had Rudock been able to stay around and be a quality backup, and also fretted over the possibility of CJ getting banged up and needing a backup in Wiegers.

Folks...these aren't things to be feared. And quite frankly, several posters - myself included - thought this not only was a possibility this year, but a pretty solid probability.

Hell, for all we know, Wiegers might be a better QB than CJ.

I'm pretty sure most guys on the team can take the snap, turn around and hand it to Canzeri.

It's possible Wiegers could end up being better than CJ some day, but he's not better now. And CJ, according to some observers, is the best in the BIG, so there's that.

But yes, Iowa can beat NW with Wiegers. Iowa has already beaten NW two years straight with a QB who was clearly inferior to both CJ and Wiegers. You could look it up.

The Hawkeyes are making no excuses, and neither should anyone else. They will suck it up and find a way to come back for the bye week 7-0 whether it's Tyler or CJ under center on Saturday.

Was Rudock the "biggest factor" in MI hammering NW?

That's assuming our defense dominates NW and we run for 200 yards against a pretty solid defense. At some point, just like last week, we are going to need our QB to make plays. Ruddock last week wasn't the "biggest" factor but he was an efficient 17/23 for 179 passing yards and 0 turnovers.

With a beat up offensive line, I think we are going to make some plays in the passing game to win this. Their run defense is much better than they showed last week. They held Stanford to 6 points, Duke to 10 and shut Minnesota out. It will be difficult to come up with >20 points this weekend without a good passing attack.

I don't disagree with any of that. I just thought that the idea that it is "rare in modern football" to the point it wouldn't "even be possible" to win a game without the QB being the "biggest factor" was interesting - when the MI/NU game is evidence to the contrary...as you described.
