UCLA whooping SC

Jerry Seinfeld Popcorn GIF by Sheets & Giggles

I'd be happier about this if Lauren Betts didn't play for UCLA. Really don't like her very much due to her statements about our program. Very limited perspective and seems judgemental. I know that's the norm but not a fan of reactiveness. Otherwise, this conference is gonna be tough! The B1G is much improved with UCLA and USC in it.

Betts had less than 10 points but affected the game without scoring. Number 1 and 3 goes down.

After the 2023 loss to LSU and all the CC22 vs Reese crap started social media got flooded with basically racist crap going back and forth . Betts was the top post player entering the portal at the time, We were trying to land her, plus she and AOG played in high school together. When all the crap hit social media several black transfers attributed that Iowa in general was racist and they would never go to school there. I believe both Betts, and Morrow (who was leaving Depaul and went to LSU of course) made such comments.

Yes, that's what I was alluding to. I hate false narratives and she very much participated in it. I hate generalities, especially when they're unjustly negative. Generalities are rarely correct as a whole regardless. She just lumped Iowa as a whole. Every place has racist people, Iowa included, but she followed popular trend with Reese and I hate when the state gets separated as if it's not something that every state struggles with to varying degrees. Iowa gets a bad rap so often for false reasons, we don't need that extra vitriol to top it off.

I have long thought that those that seem to be most involved in that narrative are also recruiting against Iowa. Can't have some upstart program land recruits that should be going to Blue bloods!

Link to the comments made by Betts stating that Iowa is racist.
Wouldn't want to see a, you know, false narrative.

That's a lot of digging. It's still on here in one, or more, of the recruiting pages from a little over a year ago right after we lost the first championship game I imagine. It was her response to other players towards Iowa fans specifically. I certainly remember it.

I'll take your word for it. I'm not digging up the quote.

I'm not either, but I'll second what AEG82 posted. this was all in response to social media posts made "supposedly" by Iowa fans in the after math by MANY well known black leaders (Abdul Jabbar for one) who called out the outrage posted by fans over Reese's actions after the game directed at Clark. (The worst display of poor sportsmanship I've ever seen). Facing her THREE times, calling her a bitch at the free throw line, (which you can read her lips on the replay), and the ring finger pointing. Their platform was that NO one called out Clark for doing the same thing to HVL on the Louisville game. This of course was a ridiculous claim, and a made up argument. Clark made the "they can't see me gesture) ONCE, walking 30ft away from HVL facing her coaches. HVL never saw any gesture, and it was NOT directed at anyone. She even said that in interviews later the she and Clark laughed about that later because it never happened. Still after all this we got the false race card played once again. This set the stage for more backlash from "Iowa fans" (supposedly), in the typical back and forth from those on both sides that have to make everything about, well, black or white. After all this Betts made some comments that she would never go to a school or in a state where people acted that way about blacks. Iowa was also very interested in Morrow who was leaving Depaul and ended up at LSU. There were some similar comments attributed to her, and she also wouldn't even visit Iowa or consider them as a possible destination.

I hope we can all be above that, but I'm sure there will be some making an issue of it, There always is. Maybe we can all use CC22 as an example once again, and rise above this pettiness. Betts made her choice and its worked out well for her. Now we have Heiden and Hays coming in next season. Go Hawks!

Seems as though you could have found it in the time it took to type this. Unless it doesn't exist. I do seem to recall Betts' mother saying she preferred her daughter play for a POC. And, then she ended up playing for Close.

Sorry, but I'm not good at attaching links. I'm sure thats one of numerous faults I have that I don't really feel the need to fix at my age. Just as a question though, how is it you can "recall" that? I don't see a link attached...

That pretty much is my recollection as well lol. In the end, it is what it is. I recall Shikreto then going on a bit of a tirade trying to convince the board that Iowa was racist whether we accepted that fact or not and didn't blame them for taking this stance. That didn't go over well either with a few posters. I stayed out of it.

I also don't know how to attach links lol. So you're good brother.

Honestly, I doubt there will be any extra sauce in that one unless Betts says something further, which, she won't. I did look for links to my statement earlier and she has a pretty strong history of race relations in her conversation regarding school choices, high school, etc. etc. It seems to be a strong consistent belief for her so perhaps it isn't surprising she acted so strongly to the commentary.

Link to the comments made by Betts stating that Iowa is racist.
Wouldn't want to see a, you know, false narrative.

The reason you're not going to have people go back and link is because Shikreto posted this same issue on several threads.

I only posted links as I found them so they are not in chronological order.

This not exactly what you're looking for, but it does have where Shikreto brought it up and it's what @AEG82 is referring to with their comments on Shikreto's tirade. Iirc, this is not the only time Shikreto started this issue and got pushback. I think this was over Bourrage recruitment and it spilled back to Betts and Morrow.

Here Shikreto brings up the issue along with Swarm CEO.

This may be the closest we get to what you're looking for unless you find it on Twitter. I could not find a post where Shikreto linked to those threads regarding Betts to validate it. However, he states Twitter in multiple places is where they would exist.
"No one was going to come to Iowa after the way racist fans behaved last season. Lauren Betts was fighting with Iowa fans on Twitter defending Angel Reese. We made our bed. Bluder, Jan, Raina, Caitlin all tried."

"Iowa became a very unpopular destination thanks to racist fans. Lauren Betts was literally fighting on Twitter with Iowa fans defending Angel Reese. We made our bed. No one big was coming to Iowa after that."

"Meanwhile anyone who paid attention during all that saw that Lauren Betts was arguing with racist Iowa fans on Twitter defending Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow didn’t even call our Swarm CEO back. Only Einstein might wonder what happened there…"

I don't have a Twitter account so I couldn't find a way to search it except via google. Google didn't give me what I was looking for on this.

I find it odd that Shikreto linked negative post about Iowa, but not the post what Betts said about Iowa fans in this exchange. Why not link to Betts's post regarding fighting Iowa fans for us to see like he did with other negative Iowa links here? Not saying they're not out there. However, you would think Shikreto would of linked Betts's post as well to validate what he was stating. I did not find those post by Betts linked in this exchange which would of been a red flag to me. Again, not saying they don't exist. Maybe someone with a twitter account can search for them and post the links.

First mention of Betts transferring by Shikreto.

More interesting links I came across:
Same time period regarding getting a big via portal and Swarm CEO. Doesn't state who the big is. Maybe the players talked about how much $$$ Iowa had for a big and why Heinrichs never got a call back from some players? Just a thought on it.
"Brad heinrichs was interviewed about this, and he said we would have needed $600k+ to have a legit shot at the big Bluder wanted. He said we just don't have it."

More Shikreto ...

We want people with a "we culture" and not people in the "me culture." Probably oversimplified, but that's how it shakes out to me.

People need to realize there are "smear services" out there. They create profiles and/or pay people to write smears against a person, organization or a biz. Not saying one way or another what happened here. However, just be aware these are common tactics employed by someone to get the upper hand by discrediting their rival. If I was an Iowa recruiter, I would surely bring this to a recruit's attention to see if they can reverse some of the negative sentiment and to at least plant seeds to question that maybe what the recruit is reading could be bogus comments to make us appear racists.

To finalize my statement earlier, much like what kceasthawk posted, I distinctly recall reading Betts posts, during her time in the portal or right after already committing to UCLA, on twitter or instagram, trashing Iowa fans and arguing with them actively during that time. I'm under no doubt that there was actually some racism involved, for sure, but to what extent and from whom exactly, I've no idea. Betts was fighting back along with other players, mostly associated with a certain SEC team I believe. Shikreto is right, the perception is out there. I wish it wasn't but it is. I don't think Betts has any regrets about not coming here but damn, she would've been a good addition for last years run. Could've used her against Cardoso. Regardless, I'm very happy with our bigs as it is and Czinano was great last year.

I sincerely hope this dies down some now that CC is gone as I think her popularity was the driving force for so many fans coming out of the woodwork for us. Truly, the first player Iowa has had to drive so many non-Iowa fans nationally into our fandom, at least, temporarily. I think that's what bothers me the most as I think the most vitriolic people were likely just fans of hers (similar to Swifties) and not actually Iowa fans possibly. I've not seen anywhere near the toxicity from our fanbase before, or after, that period and I hope I don't again. Too bad CC had to be the central figure there as it had nothing to do with her at all. Truly a situation where a celebrity is innocently caught up in the midst of an underlyingly and perpetually divisive situation.

Actual Iowa fans also get to deal with the ramifications as well going forward. This is why I believe it's a misleading narrative. Iowa was just the popular team at the time, from a primarily white state, with another misleading issue regarding race in football a few years ago that was beaten in court later but was already deemed guilty from the start, and with THE white global superstar in it's midst in WBB. It was an easy target frankly.

I sincerely blame Reese, in large part, for starting this charade and essentially attacking an entire state for her own self interest and gain, of which, she certainly benefited in popularity as few talked about her before her forced rivalry occured, but with no concept or acknowledgement of the ramifications that we all have to deal with both as a program and a perception of state that's misguided as a whole like Shikreto was saying in his posts. This whole thing started with Reese and has continued to follow Clark into the WNBA. It's shameful IMO.
