Wow, what a hangover after the Purdue win.

Notes:

Jok ... nothing yet, playing lackadaisical. Go off for 30 in second half? :)

Moss ... case of the freshman's. Should not play in 2nd half. Killing us with turnovers and bad decisions.

Williams -- should play Moss's minutes in 2nd half, otherwise Dailey

Bohannon ... not the problem.

Ellingson ... Eh...

Guards overall? Getting totally outplayed! Just punched offense and defense.

Cook and Kriener ... please keep these guys in the game and ride the hot hands.

Baer ... nothing special, where's the hustle on the team overall?

Pemsl and Wagner ... invisible mostly

Uhl ... may as well see what he can do in place of Baer for a bit.

Bigs overall ... can't rebound for crap, but Kriener and Cook the only guys keeping Iowa in the game.

Overall? Could';t have played worse in the first half except for Kriener and Cook. Young team does not yet know how to play and WIN on the road. Road games are going to be what keeps Iowa from the tourney. If Iowa can finish 9-9 in B10 somehow might make NIT. But they desperately need to figure out how to play on the road and the guards, jesus, getting killed defensively and totally confused in the half court against NW's D.

Life with youth on the road and The Captain not clicking ... You-yo, up and down

Let's see how they come out for the second half. Let's see if they've added some more character to the mix.

Yeah, my hope is they respond like they did after being down 9 against Purdue. The difference is that Iowa played really well in first half versus Purdue, just got hit by a run in last minute of first half and they were at home. The guards, in particular, look horrible. Moss needs to see the bench and Jok needs to turn it on to get the other guys settled down. NW is out hustling Iowa for loose balls and rebounds. They are playing with urgency and Iowa was playing tired, always reacting on D, behind a step. Yeah, hopefully Fran gets into them at halftime and wakes them up. And, damn, Kriener has a really pretty jumpsuit from 12-18 out! Need him on the floor in this game to help with spacing, hopefully give Cook some room inside and Jok on the perimeter. Keep driving into the paint because NW is closing out hard on perimeter.

They came out thinking since they just beat #17 Purdue they are good enough to just walk in and show up. This team has talent but they are seeing that you are going to get a great game out of every team in the conference.

Bohannon can't guard Macintosh. None of Iowa's guards can.

He guarded the quicker Purdue guards just fine. The whole team is playing with no energy and emotion. This is what young teams do. They are going to have games like this, but they need to at least hustle and play defense, which they are not.

Yup that is what you get with "young" teams. They can play good some nights and other nights you play like this. Effort and pride is what they need to play with!

And no defense is a killer. Fran needs to get a better pulse on this team. It doesn't matter how young you are at this point in the season. This totally wipes out the goodness of the Purdue win!

It's a loss. While disappointing, it was also predictable (see the "we will with our next 6 games thread").

What's disconcerting is the starters had what amounts to absolutely nothing. About the only thing we might possibly take from this game is evidently the Purdue game took a mental as well as physical toll. Iowa used up everything in the tank Thursday, and doesn't know quite how to refill that tank yet.

He didn't really guard well at all, but I think your point is that he certainly didn't do any worse than the other guards is valid. He wasn't the problem, so to speak, so much as the entire team was the problem. Funny, went from every player playing well against Purdue to almost every player playing like crap against NW. I think this is a young-team issue in the sense that they still don't know how to play on the road in the B10. They're going to continue to take their lumps, an up and down season is what I expected and is what is playing out. Still, didn't expect such a flat, non-hustle performance this game. They cut it to 3 in the second half before completely falling apart.

The 2nd team actually had it at sort of a game in 2nd half.

Fran's defense where he double teams the ball handler 30ft from basket is an automatic open 3-ball shot for opponent. Just pass the ball to corner for open 3.

I have no idea what team will show up from game to game.
They're fun to watch and dynamic offensively at times.
They're wildly inconsistent. They make great plays followed by poor decisions.
Defense and rebounding is below average and erratic.

Tonight was a dud. That's what you'll get this year with this Hawk team. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see more duds.

Some teams are more businesslike. Last year's team was closer to that. This team is the opposite.

Watching the overreactions on the board will be amusing for a while. Just a little while.

Not off free throw make, actually. Forced a few TOs and ten second violations that way. Problem was on offense with guards clueless about offense without Jok playing well.

Flush the game.

I would have liked to see what Dailey could have done. He has the same athleticism as Lindsey and Vic Law. Moss and Jok did not show up--so why not Dailey. Fran went with a large dose of Ellingson and he was overmatched.

McIntosh is too long for JB to guard, and that's always going to be an issue with him. Love the kid but his height is his kryptonite.

Yup. And, in fairness, Macintosh is a stud who causes problems for a lot of guards. Nevertheless, he absolutely schooled Iowa's backcourt tonight. I mean, pathetic schooling, almost like child abuse. Very surprised Iowa's guards were that bad all around, especially Jok, but then again it wasn't like other guards caused any reason to lay off Jok at all. Moss was HORRIBLE! This is why no one should rag on any one player (like Williams) because there are just going to be nights when some of the young ones are better than others and it's not going to be predictable. Tough, tough coaching problems for Fran even as this team shows flashes of things to come in future years. But, damn, this year's team is soooooo unpredictable. Hopefully Hawks never have such an unbalanced lineup again, but I agree that it's still fun wondering what will happen next with this group. Still, I'm really worried about every single road game at this point. Nebraska was an impressive showing all things considered. 2 road blowouts and one 2OT game. Let's see what happens as they grow or, god forbid, regress.

Northwestern played a flawless game and we sucked in every facet of the game. The result was a complete blow out. The blueprint to beat Iowa is as simple as can be. Stop Peter Jok from scoring, and get into the paint and drive it if open or kick it out, one of the 2 will be available. We will live to fight another day.

There, fixed that for you. Pretty good formula for beating pretty much EVERY team!
