What is going on with him? It just seems like he barely gives any effort out there (especially on defense). You can tell that Fran hasn't been very happy with him lately. He played only 7 minutes and recorded absolutely zero stats. No points or rebounds... not even fouls.

I was really hoping Uhl would break out this year. His problem seems to be upstairs and between the ears. He has plenty of physical tools.

Wagner is starting to get more of his minutes. This is a good thing as Wagner has played well and deserves the extra minutes Fran is giving him. Otoh, we really need uhl to step his game up. He as a critical role while Iowa was killing it in January. We need uhl this, and next season.

Williams is also seeing more time, which is great.

He is trying to do too much instead of just letting the game come to him, similar to McCabe early in his career. He often just puts his head down and goes to the hoop out of control. He would be more effective if he just played within himself and took open threes and played tough around the rim.

Uhl has the yips on his dribble drives shooting layups. If he had any touch around the basket to go with ouside shooting threat/handles, he'd really be tough.

It is mental with him, but that doesn't make it any easier to fix than no talent at all.

Wagner is impressive with how smart he plays as Freshman and he knows how to make his bunnies. I think him and that Anuoby for Indiana that Fran wanted show Fran's eye for forwards is good. His ability to bring in guard talent is spotty.

I think your point of "tough around the rim" is the key. He keeps the ball very high on drives, but then avoids contact to his arms as he throws it up. Staying tough and in control and fighting through contact would do wonders for his confidence. He would draw more fouls and likely finish more drives.

He definitely needs to learn to play within himself. I thought he was getting there, has slumped lately... He needs to play more team ball too.

We need him back to the way he was a month ago. He played a big part in our peak. I was hoping that 3 PT shot was going to get him back in rhythm.

In Big Ten games, Wagner is a more physical type player
around the basketball rim, he can get rebounds and score.

Uhl is not as tough as Wagner. Uhl weighs 20 pounds less
than Wagner and both are about the same height.

Uhl shot is very funky and if it just misses, it won't go in. He will never get the "friendly" roll because his shot is so weird. Plus it comes from the chest, which is difficult to get off against good defenses.

I agree his defense has really gone downhill. Also he does not box out at all. Last night there was at least 2-3 times where his guy got the rebound. He just stands there and thinks he can out jump everyone.

He needs to get it going again. Baer and him have been off (except for Baer in IU game) and Iowa needs their scoring. Luckily Clemmons picked up some of the slack last night.

Uhl has killed the team on the defensive end. I believe this is one of the bigger reasons why Iowa went into a losing streak. Opposing coaches have figured out that Dom will give up on defending, if you take him strong to the basket. If you watch closely, a lot of runs by other teams have been fueled by guys who Dom was supposed to be guarding getting to the basket or getting open looks. He also does a lot of spectator rebounding, and offensive rebounds are a huge problem when Woody is on the bench. The physical talent is there, and we really need Uhl to step up, if Iowa is going to do damage in the tourneys. Wagner can take Dom's role on the defensive end, but he can't score away from the basket. Both are lousy foul shooters.

His main problem is he isn't mentally or physically tough. He is by far the worst defender on the team.
At this point he needs to stay on the bench. I would like to see Williams, Baer and Wagner off the bench.

Fran pulled Uhl and Wagner out of the game pretty quickly in first half and was screaming at the both of them.
I thought Wagner was playing well and noticed he got him back in there fairly quickly.
Uhl never came back in, which was the correct move.

I think Uhl has talent, but often pouts if things don't go his way.
He needs to get tougher, if he doesn't there are a lot of guys who will take his minutes next year.
I'm hoping he snaps out of it because he can be a positive contributor to this team.

I am pretty sure the majority of Fran's angst at that moment was directed at uhl, not Wagner.

I wonder if Uhl will be a surprise transfer out that Fran will not fret much about either. He has some ability but just does not bring it enough to get the maximum out of what he has. I had high hopes for him but am beginning to wonder if he is going to be the type of contributor we need him to be down the stretch this year and next. Hopefully Dom consistently comes out more determined.

Uhls a hard player to figure out.

He either tries to hard (offense) or not enough.(defense). He's just out of sync on both ends.

He's really not a post player which is where he really struggles on D. Hopefully with more big bodies coming in next year he can move back to 3 / stretch 4 role.

IMO he did do some good things the last two games.

Against IU he drew allot of fouls by taking it strong to the hole and had a couple good sequences where he got after it on the glass.

AgainstvUM when he got back in late he played some pretty good D when we were pressuring the ball.

I've noticed that he does pretty good for the first few minutes after getting chewed out but the intensity tends to diminish after a few trips up and down.

He just has to play harder more frequently.

I concur.

Most of the focus has been on Uthoff's slump or Jok's inconsistency, but it has been the total lack of bench production in that 5-6 game stretch that really killed our momentum. The first half of the conference tilt and the clutch threes and solid defense from from Baer and Uhl were critical to sweeping MSU and Purdue. While we can forgive the walk-on for "hitting the wall", it then falls squarely onto Uhl's shoulders for the bench going completely comatose.

If Uhl get's his mind right...(and Baer gets his "second wind")...then this team has a great chance to recover and make a run.

Since you said it first I'll piggy back off of it. There seems to be a disconnect between Fran and Uhl right now. When he came out against Michigan in the first half, he had that look like what did I do coach. Just curious if there's a communication breakdown at this point. Seems like he can do nothing right. He has no leash right now.

Confidence is a big issue with Dom right now imo. He's shown glimpses this season that he can be a very good player. Before February he was shooting great from 3, and I like his ability to drive. If he can consistently knock down 3's he is going to be tough to stop on shot fake drives. If he can take a similar leap that Jok has taken on terms of consistency with his shot I think he'll be our 2nd leading scorer and a 2nd or 3rd team All-Big 10 player. All the tools are there.

I don't think anyone is boxing out, not just Uhl. Michigan had a lot of second chance points because they beat our guys for the rebound. The failure to box out and being flat footed around the rim contributed to their slump lately. Iowa seemed to wait for the ball fall into their hands instead of going up for it. With our length, it shouldn't happen.

A big part of not boxing out is playing zone. I know Uhls not real good at it anyway but zone can't help.

It's one of the trade offs as well giving up allot of 3 point looks.

What were supposed to be trading off for I'm not exactly sure.

Dom is being misused in our offense right now. It was cute and effective earlier in the season when he was the "5", but now it's obvious teams have figured it out. I think Dom's natural position is the Aaron White/ Jarrod Uthoff Forward position. I think that he's going to be alright once he gets back to his natural position at the "mismatch forward" spot.

Michigan took a lot of 3 point shots, which resulted in a lot of long rebounds. Also having Woodbury or Wagner hedge the high ball screen leaves our primary rebounder in no man's land when shots go up. No doubt there were some missed assignments, but I didn't think overall that the rebounding was awful. Woodbury as every bit as valuable as Uthoff last night because of his work on the glass.

Didn't mean to sound like I want to give up on Uhl. Someone just needs to light a fire, especially on defense and rebounding. We need him giving us at least 8-10 quality minutes for the tourneys.

He has the potential to be a very good player over the next couple of years, so I don't want him to transfer. That would leave us VERY inexperienced on the inside, in addition to the guard positions next year.
