UI to build $96M parking garage next to Carver-Hawkeye Arena

Those 250 extra parking spots must be some kind of special.

TCU is building a five-story, $42 million parking garage this summer. Here’s where.
"TCU is planning to start building a new parking garage with space for 950 cars later this year."

Obviously this garage has direct ties to Carver but it's also correlated to the ever-expanding hospital complex. A new Inpatient Tower is going to be built north of Children's Hospital at the water tower site. And an Ambulatory Center was supposed to be built where the Fieldhouse is per the last published 10-year plan, don't know the status today.

This is good for parking volume but good luck getting out in under an hour if you're parked on the top floor and don't leave immediately from a packed Carver.
Well there will be about 2500 at the top watching the final minute and then running to their cars. Even more posts to complain about Hawkeye fans leaving early.

This looks to be in the preferred paid parking area. I've seen 4 wheelers avoid chained off exits by the water plant by driving around them and up over the grass. What a mess.

Am I the only one that is shocked that a parking ramp costs 96 million. Didn't they build Carver for 20 million? Perhaps I'm just getting old.

I recall a $40M number on carvers initial construction. But I’m not sure if that was the total cost or the amount Carver contributed.

Redoing the roof could make the place look acceptable on the outside.... It's ugly with all the exposed metal supports.

The hole in the ground and walking down to the court is unique and pretty cool..... Just sucks not having some kind of concourse halfway up the stands.
I believe that the original plans for Carver had a capacity similar to the Fieldhouse the design included a concourse halfway up in the stands I don’t remember if it had any concession stands or restrooms but it was removed because fans wanted an arena with more seating.

If they don’t build an entertainment district with bars, hotels and restaurants immediately adjacent then they are F’n stupid.
Developers would need to consider how to yield revenue. If there isn’t a business market (I.e. Sunday-Thursday occupancy), to support enough revenue, then it’s a destination/special event market. To make revenue, they would need to yield rates and prices accordingly. Then everyone would be on here complaining how expensive it is.

For folks traveling in to games, in various locales, my wife (no pics) and I have never been able to do it for less than $500. Not including tix and car fuel/flight. Anymore, going to a college game not in our own backyard, we expect it is going to exceed $1000.

The more development and interest around something generally yields higher prices.

The capacity really didn't change. Their ability to raise enough funds was the issue for the removal of the concourse. There was a strong 'anti naming' sentiment at the time but 'Carver' got slapped on it because he had to pony up more money and the concourse was lost.

A simple visit to Wiki tells you all you need to know, ofc. It confirmed my recollection of $18 mil to build CHA - 18.4 exactly. Roy Carver contributed $ 9.2 mil, so exactly half.

At the time it seemed so modern and new compared to the FH it was greatly anticipated. But in retrospect it has become apparent just how generic it is. Just another plain oval, mult-purpose design along the lines of 70's NFL stadiums.

Nothing wrong with Carver, get your ass to the games !
Oh there is plenty wrong with Carver. Just not enough that should preclude people from attending events there..............biggest issue? The jackwagons who see people they haven't seen in awhile and they decide to have a 10 minute conversation 4 people wide in the main fan concourse walking area. Get your selfish self over by the doors between the concession stands, plenty of wide open space there where you won't be blocking traffic while you yuck it up...........and stay off my lawn.

The situation you describe isn't just Carver. I'm beginning to think it should be socially acceptable to simply run into said folks as you are making your way to where you're going. People's spacial awareness is gone anymore.
And while I'm here, since when did it become OK to drive in the left effing lane of the interstate when you're going about 0.00001 mph faster than the car you're next to?!?! Remember when we drove in the right, passed quickly on the left, and then got back into the right? When did that change and why didn't anyone tell me?!?!
Your lawn? Don't get anywhere near mine! :)

Don't worry about your lawn, looked at it, pretty good, not as good as mine but good.

I had an Uncle....as long as I am doing the speed limit I can be in any lane....... never rode with him again.

People walking 3-4 wide....and then stopping....people walking against traffic
People waiting for the person to put their groceries in the car, back out, etc. so they can get that spot. Don't be that person, if I see you throwing your flashers on because you saw me unlock my car and I haven't even gotten to it yet...one of two thing are going to happen........I will be slooooooowwww as slow can be getting out or if I want to inconvenience less people I will back out towards you and wave the person coming from the other way into my spot so you don't get it. You are probably the person that is too important to take your grocery cart to the cart corral

Vent over.....what were we talking about?

I will often just sit in my car until the person gets tired of waiting and drives on.
