UI to build $96M parking garage next to Carver-Hawkeye Arena

Am I the only one that is shocked that a parking ramp costs 96 million. Didn't they build Carver for 20 million? Perhaps I'm just getting old.
Depends. When Ramp 1 was built, it was around $30 million and that is maybe 300-500 spaces IIRC. Obviously cost of labor and materials have gone up.

These ramps typically have about a 30 year lifespan.

Knowing the University, you will have to buy a parking permit, and it won’t be open for “general admission” for game goers.

CSB…..after I graduated from Iowa, I took a job as custodian for the University until I could find my career job. I worked in the Dental Science building. This was right after Carver opened. Work hours were 5 pm to 1:30 am. On game nights we were not allowed to park in the Dental Science lot…because they (of course) charged fans to park there.

We had nowhere to park, so we parked in the Dental Science loading dock area….which was “No Parking”. Naturally we all got parking tickets, which the University would not waive. Our supervisor raised a stink about it. We were employees for God’s sake, and should be able to park at work!

Fortunately the University caved, and we all got a key to the lot entrances.
Employees will likely have to buy a permit. Otherwise they'll prob charge just as much as newton road during the day.

For games, it will likely be pay per car entry.

The ramps are paid for by bonds. So they have to charge fees to park there to help pay for the cost and maintenance.

That's more shocking than the cost ...you'd think concrete, steel and rebar would last way longer than that.

US aircraft carriers last 50 years and those have far more wear and tear than parking ramps...and they spend their lives in salt water.
I may be off, but I'm fairly certain I am correct. I worked for P&T about 10 or years ago. I wasn't directly involved with planning/building but I was directly involved with the people that did plan/build.

Hundreds of cars in and out per day, plus the elements. May not only be the direct upkeep, but also insuring it.

Also, not sure if this is going to be partially underground or not. But if they need to excavate thousands of loads of dirt, that will add a lot to the cost as well. Plus a massive ventilation system.

I recall new Ramp 2 being an insane amount of soil removed. Several thousands of truck loads.

This is great news. Will certainly help with parking and should promote more attendees at CHA; among other things of course.

Parking is/was always a pain for CHA events...
Would never park in that thing for a basketball game. Can park right next to Kinnick and walk the short distance. Easy in and out.

They should've built in some condos and shops too.

I understand you will have to pay to park….I was just saying it would be so much like the University to make it a donor lot or one where you have to buy a permit instead of it being a “pay per entry” lot.

I hope that isn’t the case, but you never know.

And employees shouldn’t have to buy a permit to park at their place of employment.

You are correct.
Proof yet again if you need it; Mother Nature remains undefeated.

Typically, I would agree with your last statement. It really sucks and is definitely unpopular. With such high demand, it has to be done to be able to supply the space needed.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure there are ramps as nearly as old as as me, and I’m 58.

The ramp by the old capital mall... That's definitely over 30 years old. I don't think there are plans to replace it due to age/safety.

They very well might replace someday with a bigger one or something. I'd like to think modern ramps are expected to last at least 50 years.

This is a thrilling basketball discussion ;)
