The United States has told its allies that it does not plan to participate in military exercises in Europe, according to reports.

The move, the latest in Donald Trump's pivot away from the bloc, would see America pull out of exercises beyond those already scheduled for this year.

The withdrawal concerns exercises that are on the "drawing board", according to Swedish newspaper Expressen.

It means that Nato countries will be forced to plan exercises without the participation of the US military, the largest in the alliance.

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised Nato countries for not meeting the current goal of spending two per cent of GDP on defence, arguing that the disparity puts an unfair burden on the United States.

On Friday, he warned that the US may not defend Nato allies who do not meet the spending target as part of a major shake-up of the alliance.

The NATO breakup is happening fast. We live in monumental times. How would I explain this to my grandfather, who fought in the Pacific theatre
NATO will still exist...the other countries realize the threat is real but now they know we're part of that threat. My father was at the Battle of Bastogne as part of Patton's Third Army Second Cav under Col. Reed. They were called Patton's Ghosts. Had I told him we'd have a president who would actively aid a Russian invasion of a democratic ally, he would have slapped me silly.

The era when we had two world wars. How many world wars since NATO?

We had many of the same allies before we officially called it NATO. And before anyone invokes the mutual defense clause, it's only as strong as the will of the leaders and the people of a respective country.

I'm 100% certain that no U.S. president will send American troops to defend Baltic state honor.

If it’s Trump or some other Russian Asset you’re correct.

I was on 2 NATO operations in 64, when we had a NORMAL president, that wasn't BRAIN dead. It was a good experience working with other countries, it ended with "OPERATION DRAGON ROUGE". in the Belgium Congo. military fellas can check that one out .
