University Nationals

Paddock was down 3-12 at one point, fought back within one point at 12-13 with about 10 seconds left, then lost 12-15.

Looks like this session is wrapping up. Anyone know when it resumes?

Only upside for us today seems to be Carton and Klapprodt still on championship side. Otherwise, no significant good news. All other potential contributors (not the known contributors) went down already.

Paddock goes down in round 3 15-12 I believe. Lost to a Minnesota redshirt freshman. Trying not to overreact, but the guy he lost to was 4-3 last year for the gophers and never placed in state in HS according to his bio. We need Paddock to be a producer next year. I like his motor, but needs to get stronger and shore up his defense.

To be fair to Burke he is wrestling at 80 kg which is about 176 pounds. He also wrestled yesterday at 75 kg (165) so he is wrestling up. Finally he's also a late registrant to the freestyle tourney.

Those guys he is going up against are probably natural 174 pounders and are a little more fresh.

Has Paddock competed at 165 since leaving high school? Curious if we even know that he can make that cut.

I know that Sam Stoll is a greco guy. But i feel he should have wrestled freestyle considering he is Iowa's Heavyweight next year. Better competition in free and would benefit him more for folk imo.

Agree. Not like he's cutting weight.

Laux is still alive as well. I'm guessing not mentioned as Gilman is clearly the guy at 125. While Gilman not competing here may or may not be a clear indication, I believe he is still eligible for an Olympic redshirt. I doubt he goes that route and may not be here as he's focusing on folk? I have no idea, but Laux could find his way in the lineup if Gilman does go the OR route as unlikely as the stars aligning may seem at the moment.

Gilman has probably been competing every summer for the past ten years. Probably is taking time off to rest his body, get stronger.

Laux gets another TF win. I guess I didn't include him in that list because I was expecting to see him win the ones he has so far. I really like Laux, but Gilman and Clark are just a notch above.

Days not over yet my friend.

Carton loses to Danny Sabatello 11-4

Sorensen wins 5-0

For those following the Cadet 54 kg Battle Royal - Lee TF win, Gomez over Olivas 4-4, Max Murin over Kornrath 1-1, Fix TF win,

Laux's best strategy would be to qualify for an Olympic redshirt himself, which would give him an extra year after Gilman is gone. Who knows who he'll compete against for the spot at that point (hopefully Lee or Suriano), but he's not going to see the lineup otherwise.

Meyer wins 10-5

I think Laux joined the program knowing that he was probably going to be a backup his entire career with both Gilman and Clark coming in. Great guy to have in the room pushing those two and ready to go in case of injury. Love having him part of the Hawkeye family.

He's every bit unlikely to qualify for an Olympic redshirt, if not more so, than making the Iowa lineup.

Someone mentioned he's "just a notch" below Clark and Gilman. I would argue easily a couple notches below. He wasn't even a top 20 125 pounder last year.

Yeah, agree. He's not close.

So Lee kills Gomez...Daton fix TF'd his guy in about :30. Going to be a great finals between them.

How is Ethen Lofthouse still eligible for University Nationals?
I think one of the requirements is to be within a year of graduating. Same reason McDonough was eligible last year.
27 and under and still a student. I think Denis Tsargush and some other Senior level studs wrestled at World Universities for Russia a couple years ago when they dominated the event. Expect to see Taylor, McDonough and/or Ramos, and some other Senior studs challenging for the University spots after the senior trials.

Lee by TF. May take a little longer than usual because of Fix's size/strength/defense but 4 minutes is plenty enough time.

I initially thought Lee was small for 54kg and although not seriously being challenged here, he would struggle with the larger world class studs at worlds. Watching the Lee/Gomez match made me realize Lee is big enough for the weight. The size difference between him and Fix is not as much as I thought.

brooks is quite the freestyler, hope he keeps that scoring mentality when regular season comes around. I have high hopes for him this year.

I thought the match between he and Gomez would be closer because Gomez is very solid in his positions so I thought he could withstand the blitz that Lee brings to the table. Lee is just a great chain wrestler.

Re. Philip Laux - things happen. Would anyone who saw Jesse Whitmer wrestle in open tournaments before the 1996-97 season ever predict he would be the Hawkeye starter, let alone a national champion inducted into the NWHOF Dan Gable Museum Glen Brand class today? You'd be a liar if you said, "yes" after watching the way David Morgan owned him in tournaments. Guys get hurt, can't hold weight and guys improve. I'm not making predictions - just pointing out examples some seem to be ignoring.

im with you double g would like to see laux have achance to show what hes got,but not at the expence of gilman

Jason took it to Cade! Looked really good. Went for back exposure at the end of the second and it looked like he had it but they didn't call it and Cade got a reversal to back. 6-2 final score but was a lot closer then that. Not bad for a kid who just started training freestyle.
