University Nationals

Re. Philip Laux - things happen. Would anyone who saw Jesse Whitmer wrestle in open tournaments before the 1996-97 season ever predict he would be the Hawkeye starter, let alone a national champion inducted into the NWHOF Dan Gable Museum Glen Brand class today? You'd be a liar if you said, "yes" after watching the way David Morgan owned him in tournaments. Guys get hurt, can't hold weight and guys improve. I'm not making predictions - just pointing out examples some seem to be ignoring.

No doubt, these things happen. It is rare but it happens. The point is that so far the results do not show he's at that level. No offense was intended.

Fix just beat Lee.
He looked much bigger than Lee. Lee got 2 takedowns and was in on the legs constantly, but Fix exposed him twice, scoring last for the win. Lee was unable to break him down from behind for the winning 2 with about 10 seconds left. The match probably would have been a major in Lee's favor in folkstyle. I'll take Lee in the remaining 2 matches

Brooks vs. Lofthouse in the semis. Ryan Loder in the semis on the other side.

Brooks almost made me have a minor freakout moment. Sometimes he reminds me of a better more athletic Mike Kelly. Too focused on upper body nonsense with questionable in match decisions. Very good wrestler that I think is always going to be susceptible to a head scratching loss or two.

Agree. Brooks gave away some points there. Pharr countered the undertook nicely and Sammy kept trying the same thing. Nice job coming back.

Cooper teched by Clayton Ream 10-0. Strength and desire seemed to be lacking in that match.

Cooper and Carton both lose. Cooper is extremely weak on the mat, and I don't see him being a factor at any weight. His neutral game is solid, but he'll continually get the piss ridden out of him against good wrestlers. I thought Carton looked athletic with some beautiful left high-crotches, but he was just too small for the weight class. Got guys on their butts constantly but couldn't finish for a freestyle 2. Hopefully he's big enough for 141

Jason took it to Cade! Looked really good. Went for back exposure at the end of the second and it looked like he had it but they didn't call it and Cade got a reversal to back. 6-2 final score but was a lot closer then that. Not bad for a kid who just started training freestyle.

How come the brackets have Cade Olives going forward?

Fix beats Lee again. Wow, explosive wrestler, but Lee probably won the folkstyle match.

I was wrong on that one. Fix getting a couple turns and a 4 pointer to take the second match. Lee had 3 takedowns but wasn't able to get any exposure points in either match. I thought Lee would handle everyone. Hats off to Fix

Sorenson fails to capitalize on too many opportunities and goes down to Collica. Probably outshot him 5-1. Couldn't get his knees to touch for the winning takedown as time expired. Not happy about that one

I might be done watching for the day. Meyer just got scrambled to death against a guy that did absolutely nothing the entire match. My blood pressure can't take watching our guys continue to lose matches that they control in almost every aspect. I'm trying not to lose it

Brooks loses (he still doesn't have enough basic go to offense). Burak wins and is our only finalist. Burak has yet to be challenged

JIM Wilson of Stanford is no slouch. And Neither is Eten Loftouse. How about focusing on Burak now! He's been on a tear

Never said either were slouches. Not upset about the Brooks loss, but at the end of the day he needs more go to offense. Too much standing around in upper body locks (has done this since getting to college). Meyer was constantly in on his single, only to lose multiple ensuing scrambles, which is always a frustrating way to watch your guy lose. Burak continues to get better and better.

Agree. If he wrestles smart, he can beat just about anyone at his weight. If not, he can lose some head-scratchers (see at Okie State last year). If the mat IQ comes along, the sky's the limit for Sammy.

Congrats to Nathan Burak. He Tech-Falled all of his opponents to win the Brackets. out scored his competition 64-1 . Hope he gets OW. But that Coon fella looked pretty good aswell
