For nearly eight years, the University of Iowa has touted the work and stories of its high-achieving researchers, scholars, and creators through a “Dare to Discover” campaign involving banners displayed throughout downtown Iowa City.

Starting with 40 names and faces featured in 2016, the number of honorees has increased annually — totaling 450 over the years, including the current 2023 campaign.

Looking ahead to 2024, the UI Office of the Vice President for Research is seeking nominations for “outstanding” undergraduate students, graduate students, or postdoctoral researchers to be featured next year.

“Nominations of students and postdocs from diverse backgrounds and that represent a range of disciplines, especially the arts and humanities, are encouraged,” according to the call for nominations.

Selected researchers will be notified by late September, with banners on display from January 2024 to mid-March 2024.

Hung from light poles and other heights throughout downtown Iowa City, the campaign features photos, names and teasers where passersby can learn more about the students’ productivity.

“These exemplary students and postdocs, who were nominated by their faculty mentors and colleagues, show incredible commitment to their pursuit of new knowledge that advances our understanding of ourselves and the world around us,” UI Vice President for Research Marty Scholtz said about the 2022 honorees. “They are shining examples of what is possible when you pair research and creative activities with an undergraduate, graduate or professional education.”

Although the first two crops of banners included professors, since 2018 they’ve featured students and postdocs.

Past honorees have included Karim Abdel-Malek, a biomedical engineering mechanical engineering professor in charge of the UI Virtual Soldier Research program; astronomy legend and longtime professor Don Gurnett; and students across the disciplines — including several involved in COVID-19-related research.
