Unrivaled: The amount of layups these women…

When fans whine about the struggle this year’s team is having, watch Kate Martin. Iowa did not just lose the GOAT, but Martin’s very talented. She looked very good today playing for a talented team.
Remember her as a freshman, less seasoned than several current freshman now. Development and effort by the freshmen I think will be fun to watch over the next few years

How many people are there?

It only holds approximately 8500 and was full the first game of the season. I don't think they mentioned last night's crowd. Sort of weird, they all sit on the tv camera side.

Edit 850 not 8500

I thought it was 850 people. It is mostly tarped over sidelines with a few people on the end. Or that is what I think I saw. You can see and judge for yourself:

here we are talking about it again tonight. Stuelke misses a TON of layups . Just unreal

She had a good game but agree, she has way too many Angel Reese moments when she throws the ball up at the basket. Could have easily had 10 more points off missed bunnies.

Not surprised.

Unrivaled sees expected dip in week two

The new women’s basketball league Unrivaled is averaging 194,000 viewers across TNT and truTV through two weeks, with that average rising to 238,000 when truTV-exclusive games are excluded.

Coverage on Monday night averaged 166,000 on TNT/truTV (Laces-Rose: 192K; Lunar Owls/Vinyl: 134K), down 10% from the prior Monday window — which had a lead-in from an NBA Martin Luther King Day doubleheader, but also faced tougher competition from the CFP National Championship and Inauguration Day (184K).

Saturday coverage averaged 98,000 on truTV alone (Lunar Owls-Phantom: 118K; Mist-Rose: 76K), on par with the prior week (100K).

Going back to last Friday, coverage on TNT/truTV averaged 281,000 (Vinyl-Laces: 289K; Mist-Phantom: 274K) — down 10% from the prior week, with the obvious caveat that it was the debut telecast (313K). The two Friday windows account for the league’s four most-watched games.

I wonder what numbers any of these things like TGL or unrivaled need to hit to be profitable. Seems like TGL would be hitting it.

Good question. Based on what follows, it seems like expenses would be way more than the revenue that would be coming in. Ticket revenue would be bad based on the fact that the venue only has 850 seats.

From a quick google search:

Unrivaled has the potential to be profitable. The league has a strong financial base, but its long-term viability depends on TV ratings and advertiser interest.

The average player salary in Unrivaled's inaugural season is over $200,000.

The league boasts a $8 million salary pool and players also split a 15% revenue pot.

Factors that could contribute to Unrivaled's profitability

  • High salaries: The average salary in Unrivaled's inaugural season was over $200,000, which is higher than the WNBA's maximum contract.
  • Equity: Players in the inaugural season received equity in the league.
  • TV deal: Unrivaled has a multiyear deal with TNT Sports, which also invested in the league. Games are broadcast on TNT and TruTV, and streamed on Max.
  • Minimal travel costs: All games are played in Miami at a facility with 850 seats, which reduces travel costs.
  • Marketing and sponsorship opportunities: Unrivaled offers more opportunities for marketing and sponsorship.

More from a Google search:

Unrivaled officials said the league has surpassed $35 million in funding, with Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff, South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley and USC star JuJu Watkins among the investors

So I wonder then what the ratings need to be to make all of this viable and not a losing investment…

IF Caitlin plays next year, it will be interesting to compare viewership numbers.

I hope the people who invested the $35M are not expecting much return on their investment. Another sign of how crazy "NIL" is: I wonder how much JuJu Watkins invested.

I doubt CC will play there next year. At least I hope she doesn't. Nothing to gain for her personally. Probably much to gain for the league if she does.

Don’t really care one way ir the other & I am glad she did not play this year. With that said I would say all the league has to gain from it is the whole entire universe…. She would more than double immediate total viewership and probably triple it, may even quadruple it in the games in which she played.

I wouldn’t mind seeing her in a “guest” appearance 😊

The new women’s basketball league Unrivaled is averaging 185,000 viewers across TNT and truTV through 3 weeks, with last week’s slate averaging 166,000. Coverage last Monday averaged 196,000 (Vinyl-Lunar Owls: 216K; Phantom-Mist: 177K), up 18% from the previous week.
