Uthoff Sighting on NBA Mock Draft

I don't watch NBA but I've said for a long time he reminds me of Gordon Heyward in college and I think he's doing well in the NBA.

Where Draftnet has him going, Minnesota, he would fit in well with the young talents Wiggins and Towns. They need a shooter at SF.

There are some tremendous basketball players on that list and not on that list who won't get drafted.

Lots of moving parts on that list. For example, Levert is still having problems with his foot injury and that could easily sabotage his draft status. I'm always amazed at how many low production big men get drafted based upon potential alone. I still see Utoff being a late first round pick. He could still make a bigger impression this year. He isn't that big of a surprise to Hawk fans, but I think he had been very under the radar.

I see Duke's Brandon Ingram at #2 but Uthoff is better than him, albeit older. These lists are so stupid and sometimes, so are NBA GM's. I think Jarrod will go in the first as well, if there are any GM's out there that aren't idiots.

I am privy to some inside knowledge from an NBA GM (ironic this is the one time I have an anonymous scoop, as I'm not much of a b-ball fan): One of the organizations VERY high on Uthoff is a perennial contender the last 5 years, making the finals in one of those years. In fact, as of now I think he is their top pick if he manages to fall to them.

CBS Sports Top 100 Basketball players through first 2 months and a fact I didn't know:

13. Jarrod Uthoff | F | Iowa (PR: 65): It's pretty hard to argue with what Uthoff has been able to do this season, and he does it as one of the rarest, most valuable player-types in all of basketball.

The rim-protecting stretch-four is extremely tough to find, but is also incredibly useful because you can play that type of player next to literally anyone at the 3 and the 5. It makes building your team that much easier. In Iowa's case, the package they've gotten in Uthoff is just too good to be true. He's 18.6 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Then, throw in the fact that he's also playing strong defense and swatting away 3.3 shots per game, and it's just remarkable.

How remarkable you may be asking? Well, in the last 20 years, no one has made at least 30 3s (the amount Uthoff has already made) at at least a 40 percent clip while also blocking over three shots per game. Not a single player. Iowa has something special in Uthoff, and it's clear he could lead them to greater heights than they've reached yet under Fran McCaffery.

Uthoff's a fifth year senior, the difference between 18 year olds and 22/23 years is very substantial. If Ingram was still playing in college at 22/23 he would be putting up insane numbers, it's a very valid reason why he's so much higher.

Mavs?

You're friends with Sam Presti?

Sadly, I don't think the Spurs take him unless they give up on Kyle Anderson who is a somewhat similar player. Plus, I think the Spurs should be looking for a point guard for the future. I'd take Uthoff over Anderson. I think he's a better 3pt shooter and defender than Anderson will ever be. 3 and D players are incredibly valuable in the NBA so I think Uthoff will have a solid NBA career.

if he keeps his shooting stroke and can gain 10-20 lbs of muscle, he can/will play in the NBA. I think someone take him on that line of thinking alone.

Which team?

Uthoff will be even better when he isn't the feature scorer on an NBA roster...many positions...offense and defense...can get his shot off, can block shots...

Uthoff has a game that translates better to the NBA than either Marble or White (nothing against either of those guys, love em both). Marble was a well rounded player, but he's not amazing at any particular aspect of his game, and I think that will make it difficult for him to find a spot in the NBA. For White, the issue is his shooting. I'm not giving up on him in the NBA yet, because if he can develop a sort of European style to his game (more finesse, maybe) I think he can still be a solid role player in the league. Uthoff has the length and shot to, if nothing else, be a guy who can come in and hit a three. I think he'll inevitably have to continue bulking up though

No. Not friends with this GM, just know someone who knows them and is close to the vetting process. We have a Hawkeye on the inside and he was kind enough to pass this on to me and just a couple other Hawk fans he knows.

Which team?

Can't say, but do the homework on my clues. I don't know how on the down low this is supposed to be. I'm going to predict that he'll be on this team with their first pick, and the only way he isn't is if they get a top 5 pick or someone else picks him first. Bookmark this.

2nd round picks are very much in flux. Usally those guys have to agree to play in Europe if they want to get picked.

I always used to say JU reminded me of a right handed Tayshaun Prince. But JU is actually a bit of a better shooter now than Prince was at Kentucky. But just about the exact same build and same style all the way around. Prince was never spectacular in the NBA, but he was very dependable and had some great post-season runs with the Detroit. .

Uthoff has a skill set that is unique and very good. I have never seen a player block as many three point shots as Uthoff has. He is deceptively quick, good shooter, nice step back jumper, can handle the ball, solid rebounder, and an at least average defender. I don't profess to know much about basketball, but if Uthoff doesn't make an NBA roster I will be shocked. If he stays healthy, he could have a Matt Bullard type of career or even better.

Thats actually a great comparison.

Prince was a little more athletic and even longer but Uthoff shoots better.

Jarrod is kind of like an albino Kevin Durant. I think he will get drafted in the second half of the first round.

Uthoff's shot blocking is probably better? Obviously not likely to ever get to Durant's offensive level.

I think we all saw the Uthoff skills when he was RS sophomore, but he didn't have any strength. This year, he finally put on some muscle and recognized he is the star and he is dominating games.

I think Uthoff might end up being a steal if he doesn't end up in top 10...does seem like a guy that can play multi positions and defend perimeter is hard to find.

CBS has JU ranked at #13 in their Top 100+1.

I understand the youth argument. But that's always a crap shoot. Some guys never exceed expectations or even their underclassmen numbers. In Ingram, I see a skilled stringbean who averages more tattoos than points. But Durant came out pretty scrawny and that kid can shoot it from the parking lot. It would be awesome to see Uthoff stick w/ a contender and get some run in the NBA. Always breaks my heart to see players from our state in the NBA and none of them played for Iowa (Collison, Heinrich, Barnes, McDermott and probably soon to be Paige).

You can add Fred Hoiberg and Kyle Korver to that list and three of them Barnes, McDermott and Hoiberg played high school basketball in Ames. Korver is from Pella, and played college ball for Creighton. Korver is in the 13th year of his NBA career as a 3 point sharp shooter now with the Atlanta Hawks..

Well, Hoiberg is out of the league (as a player) but yes, I completely forgot Korver. Funny, I remembered one Creighton player and forgot the other.
