A recycled Rutgers coach.Wow.... talk about an uninspiring hire if true.
A recycled Rutgers coach.
Schiano is a "drill sergeant" of a coach and Tennessee desperately needs discipline.
You are correct. He was 68-67 at Rutgers during his 11 years there. That is pretty amazing stuff, but they were in the Big East during his tenure. He did a great job at one time but this is grabbing someone off the scrap heap. They went through all of this, the firing and paying off Butch to hire Sciano??!!
What other names were mentioned? How big was their wish list? His name was mentioned early on in this search. He wasn't the top choice, but this doesn't surprise me based on names that were 'out there' early on.
They had no shot with any of those names, I guess that is why Schiano has the job now.Campbell, Mullen, Gruden, Frost, Fuente, Gundy to name a few. Schiano's name was mixed in with this list.
I think Campbell was a legit candidate, but the buy out was too much. But the others, I agree, those conversations were probably pretty short. They had no shot with any of those names, I guess that is why Schiano has the job now.
Sam Wyche might have said yes. But Lovie Smith would have said no, as he continues to build something special at Illinois. They only considered former Tampa Bay coaches. Gruden & Dungy said, no. John Robinson said he was dead, and Schiano was all that was left.
Tennessee is going to be a tough place to live up to fan based expectations. The Vols fans are about a rabid as they come. I had the pleasure of attending a couple of Tennessee vs. Florida games @ Neyland Stadium, back when Chris Leake was QBing and Urban had a young Tim Tebow running the wildcat as a freshman. 100,000 plus fans and Knoxville was party city.I think Campbell was a legit candidate, but the buy out was too much. But the others, I agree, those conversations were probably pretty short.
Yep, the roster will look a lot different by next fall. As stated... Jones looked the other way on discipline.Good luck with that....
No doubt, these schools just keep moving these retreads from one school to the next.Wow.... talk about an uninspiring hire if true.
LOL, LOL, LOL.... glad I got to read this one, so I could get my funny bone tickled today........Sam Wyche might have said yes. But Lovie Smith would have said no, as he continues to build something special at Illinois.
Must be fun to be Greg Schiano right about now, and he hasn't coached a game yet. Good luck......Knoxville is burning. Politicians getting into it over the hire here.
Hmmm, funny though the most successful guy there was the one who coached there for quite a few years, (Fulmer). Changing the coach every three years isn't usually the answer either, regardless of what the hotheads think.Lived In Tenn from 1974-82, worked in the Radio biz for the flagship of UT football; I can tell you it's an obsession in Knoxville and 2/3 of the state. Mediocre and or losing football is totally unacceptable. Sometimes the expectations are not realistic. Beleive it or not you have to recruit there in a regional/national basis. Nashville and particularly Memphis are NOT Tennessee hotbeds. Johnny Majors and Phil Fulmer knew this and recruited all over the country. Fulmer had success because he hired assistants who were master recruiters and delegated well. Tennessee has the fan support and facilities to compete, but you better win! No SEC school would tolerate some of our (Iowa's) mediocrity. That's why they have turnover.
This is a top 10 job in the country, their fan base is correct to be pissed about this. He's not a terrible coach and the SEC East is a walkover, but he won't get that program where it should be. As scary as it sounds, Kiffin would have been a better hire. At least hire somebody that can recruit in the SEC
Why is this a top 10 job? The reason why I ask this is TA&M fans think theirs is a top 10 job, Florida fans think the same, Nebraska fans think the same, Arkansas fans think the same, etc...and look how all these schools' recent hires have turned out.
I personally believe we just got proof how great a job other coaches think Tennessee is, considering Greg friggin' Schiano is the best they can do. There's something about that job - and the succession of utterly ridiculous hires they've made since they canned Fulmer - that name coaches evidently don't want to get anywhere near it.
Think about it. The entire college football nation knew Butch Jones was gone more than a month ago, so their AD has had plenty of time to look around.
And the BEST they apparently could do was Schiano.
I’d put 4 of those other 5 above Nebraska and Tennessee currently.A&M isn't a top 10 job, Florida might be #10. The ability to win a NC has to at least be part of a job being top 10 -
Michigan
Ohio State
USC
Notre Dame
Alabama
Texas
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Nebraska
Then its one of LSU, Florida, Washington, Miami, or Penn State imo
